Wikipedia's definition: "meme" - provides a convenient means of discussing "a piece of thought copied from person to person"

A Catholic father stands up against homophobia in the church:

Tom knows all about walking that line. When the local cardinal asked Catholic churches to publicly support Proposal 2 in 2004, which banned same-sex marriages in Michigan, Tom couldn't help but speak up.

"Just before the election (the cardinal) put out an audio tape and told every parish they had to play it on Sunday," Tom remembers. "They started to play that tape and I had a wave of emotion come over me that's indescribable. ... I walked to the alter, turned around and faced the congregation and in my loudest voice, I said, 'This is a message of hate. It hurts me, it hurts my family and it hurts my friends. I don't come to church on Sunday to hear a message of hate. I have to leave.'"

In that case, Tom's pastor called later that day and apologized for playing the tape, promising never to do such a thing again.

Whoops! What did you put in that ad?

Actor Kellan Lutz asked his brother to put an ad in for a roommate while shooting the movie, Twilight.

As a result of the ad in Craig's list, all kinds of guys thought they had struck gay gold as far as housing:

TWILIGHT hunk KELLAN LUTZ's Los Angeles bachelor pad almost became a gay hot spot after his brother posted an ill-advised ad for roommates online.

The actor asked his sibling to find him housemates while he was shooting Twilight in Oregon, but admits the ad posted on CraigsList.com sent out the wrong message.
Lutz explains, "It was totally taken the wrong way by some of the people who called me... I live on Buffalo Street, so my brother's like, 'We are the Buffalo boys. We are looking for very athletic guys for new blood. We are alcohol-friendly, we have a pool and hot tub.'

It's rather ironic how the churches and many of their parishioners can worship and preach about their 'God of love and understanding' yet be so vehement in their hatred of homosexuality which they themselves proclaim is not even a sin.

Unfortunately, they will never see or acknowledge the contradiction.

In perfect honesty I believe churches should be destroyed and priests hanged.

^ Not all of them. Not all of them believe what they're told by their superiors.

Wedding of the judge and the librarian

A lovely big piece in the NY Times about the marriage of a judge and a librarian in the Weddings and Celebration section. The Times has done a great job of highlighting gay ceremonies along with the straights.

In August 2004, Mr. Busch and Mr. Davis were among a group of same-sex couples who sued Connecticut for the right to marry, a case the group won in October 2008. “Marriage is so much more than a collection of rights and privileges," Mr. Busch said. “Nobody says, ‘Oh, I want to civil union you.’ ”

He added: “Stephen loves me in the marrying kind of way. He loves me when I’m unlovable.”

For all those who claim that a 'civil union' is the same as 'marriage':

“Marriage is so much more than a collection of rights and privileges," Mr. Busch said. “Nobody says, ‘Oh, I want to civil union you.’ ”

okay.... if churches are going to be pulpits for politics, then why aren't they paying taxes?

/organized religion is a drug for the mindless

School production of "Falsettos"

Talk about an open-minded school! Later on in the article a boy mentions his friend made fun of him -- not for playing a gay character -- but because he in a play after not making the soccer team.

Peter Atlas always thought Concord-Carlisle Regional High School was open to diversity, but when he put out his casting call for the musical “Falsettos’’ he had doubts about the turnout.

How many teenagers would audition for a show about two homosexual couples, a straight couple, and a 12-year-old boy?

Dozens, he learned. When it came time to cast the seven-member ensemble, Atlas had his pick from among around 50 candidates from across the student body.

Ask 100 people to define "marriage" and you'll most likely get 100 different definitions. But in the eyes of the law, marriage is just a collection of rights, privileges, and obligations, so I don't think I understand your point here...

One of the biggest arguments put forward in the forums here is that 'civil union' and 'marriage' are interchangeable. One is the same as the other.

A number of us here have argued otherwise, insisting that granting 'civil unions' but not marriage makes you 'equal but separate'. Without granting marriage, gay people are still denied rights granted to others.

To emphasise the difference, I quoted from the article. I shall highlight and colour the portion I found most amusing:

“Marriage is so much more than a collection of rights and privileges," Mr. Busch said. "Nobody says, ‘Oh, I want to civil union you.’ "

It simply isn't the same as 'Will you marry me?', but it is the proposal gay people would be stuck with.

Equal, yet separate.

That was my point. ..|
