Most Lauded CD Of 2007?

September 30 was the official cut-off date for albums wanting recognition at the 2008 Grammys. That's why a record-breaking 45 titles flooded the Billboard 200 Album Chart two weeks ago.

This got me thinking, though of which albums were the most critically heralded in '07? And I truly couldn't remember too many.

Oh of course there was Amy Winehouse's "Back To Black" and Paul McCartney's"Memory Almost Full." But they weren't complete, across-the-board faves.

These are the only four albums that I can re-call getting major kudos over the past 12 months:

* ARCADE FIRE
Neon Bible

* FOO FIGHTERS
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

* M.I.A.
Kala

* WILCO
Sky Blue Sky

My money is on Foo Fighters taking home several Grammy nods (probably most in the rock field). E.S.P.G. is this year's "Stadium Arcadium." Let me know which albums I missed ...

I am so excited because so many critics siad it is a strong pop album and has a shot at Album of the Year

I see Rihanna maybe getting Best Collabo for "Umbrella" (feat. Jay-Z, even though he only raps like 2 words). Maybe a slight shot at record-of-the-year (attributed to the composers).

I really don't think she'll get Best Female Pop performance because well....her voice is not that great. It's annoying at worst. Don't get me wrong, I love "Umbrella" but every time I see her perform it live, she's sooo out of tune and the notes aren't even that hard to hear.

The only thing the critics say is that its only 5 slots and GGGB may be too slight, but i think it should be judged on its pop merit, in any event there is no denying she has a greater shot at contempory R&B album,

Umbrella is the front runner to win Rap/Sung collbo and it doesnt matter how long Jay Z raps its still eligible and its only real competition is I TRIED by Bone Thugz.

Rihanna sounds good live, you must have missed her on Letterman a couple of weeks ago.

Rihanna never claimed to be Celine Dion or Whitney but she does great with with what she has been blessed with.

Noone could have made UMBRELLA what it is besides Rihanna. Rihannas voice and style was made for UMBRELLA.


Umbrella is the biggest song this decade worldwide despite your hate.

This is Rihannas year FINALLY to get the recognition and respect she deserves. S.O.S was the best dance recording last year. Sexyback my ass.

Dont get me started on UNFAITHFUL.


Oh you also said she doesnt have a chance in pop vocal LOL well we shall see on December 6th because critics have said SHUT UP AND DRIVE is a great pop song and should make the cut.

When you've released a pair of albums containing a few monster singles and a considerable amount of unsteady, unassured material, why mess around the third time out? From beginning to end, Good Girl Gone Bad is as pop as pop gets in 2007, each one of its 12 songs a potential hit in some territory. Unlike Music of the Sun or A Girl Like Me, neither Caribbean flavorings nor ballad ODs are part of the script, and there isn't an attempt to make something as theatrical as "Unfaithful." There is, however, another '80s hit involved: just as "SOS" appropriated Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love," "Shut Up and Drive" turns New Order's "Blue Monday" into a sleek, forthcoming proposition, one that is as undeniable and rocking as Sugababes' 2002 U.K. smash "Freak Like Me" (a cover of Adina Howard's 1995 hit that swiped from another '80s single, Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?"). "Shut Up and Drive" is part of an all-upbeat opening sequence that carries through five songs. Rihanna knows exactly what she wants and is in total control at all times, even when she's throwing things and proclaiming "I'm a fight a man" amid marching percussion and synthesizers set on "scare" during "Breakin' Dishes." The album's lead song and lead single, "Umbrella," is her best to date, delivering mammoth if spacious drums, a towering backdrop during the chorus, and vocals that are somehow totally convincing without sounding all that impassioned -- an ideal spot between trying too hard and boredom, like she might've been on her 20th take, which only adds to the song's charm. The album's second half is relatively varied and a little heavier on acoustic guitar use, but it's not lacking additional standouts. Three consecutive Timbaland productions, including one suited for a black college marching band and another that effectively pulls the romantically co-dependent heartstrings, enhance the album rather than make it more scattered.

critics seem to love Magic, the new Bruce Springsteen album.
Arctic Monkeys & Against Me! should get some rock nominees.

i think Getback by Little Brother should win best rap album.

and i think Stronger should win record of the year.

I don't think the Grammy's are a good indicator of what's good, but rather, what's popular. They've improved a bit over the years, but I think the Shortlist Prize (they might have changed the name) might be a better gauge for critical praise -- I think to qualify, an album has be sell under 500k.

I think Arcade Fire ("Neon Bible") and Wilco ("Sky Blue Sky") will be mentioned on Best of 2007 Lists.

I agree with Bruce Springsteen ("Magic"), Arctic Monkeys (Favourite Worst Nightmare"), Feist ("The Reminder"), and M.I.A. ("Kala").

I'd add:

The National ("Boxer"), Iron and Wine ("The Shepard's Dog"), Band of Horses ("Cease to Begin"), The Shins ("Wincing the Night Away"), Bjork ("Volta"), Spoon ("Ga Ga Ga Ga"), A Fine Frenzy ("One Cell In the Sea"), Mark Ronson ("Version"), Modest Mouse ("We Were Dead Before the Ship Ever Sank"), Tegan and Sara ("The Con"), The White Stripes ("Icky Thump"), and Queens of the Stone Age ("Era Vulgaris") as contenders.

I personally loved Rilo Kiley's "Under the Blacklight" and Interpol's "Our Love to Admire," but reviews were mixed.
