What would that be according to you (but not necessarily as applied to you, I'm interested in general social perceptions of terms, regardless of your inclusion in the group targeted by the term): faggot, nigger, European..?

Hey, I live in Singapore. If your sentence or phrase or word or punctuation mark is not in par with the government's stance or version, it would be deemed offensive.

Words I think are offensive:

Nigger (thanks to the strong American media presence, even though it's a word we don't "know" about), chink, paki and gook. Sand nigger. Faggot.

I don't find them offensive. But said with the wrong intentions -- scary.

I find it funny that we, on the other side of the world, find the word nigger offensive. I mean, there are hardly any black people here and nigger, after all, has (or was given) strong American roots (and/or presence), so it can't be appropriately applied to other black people. Quite confusing. Paki, gook and chink is fine in an Asian country but don't say nigger. Invisible African-Americans will get pissed off.

I must admit. I was too afraid to even utter the nigger word a few years ago, let alone type it out. There was this Pakistani kid in my class and her name was Nigar Khan -- quite a popular name. I was so afraid to say her name because it sounded like nigger so for a year and half, I called her N-word Khan.

Now that is confusing me. I would assume paki is just short for Pakistani. So how ended this up being offensive? Is "Pakistani" considered to be offensive as well

Honestly I don't know. It's offensive to South Asia in the UK, apparently. I encountered the word -- what? -- 7, 8 years ago. This drunk foreigner that bumped into me called me a paki, and I actually corrected him. If he's going to tell me to fuck off, he might as well get the race right. "No, no, I'm Indian". And he said: "Exactly!" I was so confused until I did my Internet search. Then I killed his parents.

I think it is offensive because people use it to mean anyone who isn't black or white rather than a person from Pakistan.

All those sort of words confuse me, I haven't a clue what an African-American is or what a Black-British is. I really don't see why we need to know either, it pisses me off when it is a question on a form. I never know what to tick because there are so many boxes that I sort of fall into.

There aren't any words that really offend me.

bangla (it means Bangladeshi)

i'm really sorry seeta...i promise i'm going to say it only once in my life for this thread...Keleng...(it means indian (like negro term))

Once, in a road rage argument, I called the passenger a cunt. It caused quite a reaction. Her clone frat boy wanna be sperm donor of the day tried to climb over her lap and out the passenger side window.

Anyway, I was arguing with him, not her, and when she tried to open her mouth, I said something like: "shut the fuck up cunt, I wasn't talking to you"

All that over a silly thing like throwing a beer bottle at my car after he cut me off at an intersection.

Go figure.

Personally I hate "fat faggot". I'm not fat, just "beefy" or "football player build", thank you very much.

Talk about N-word, I can't fathom why people consider "Negro" as an offensive word when they don't have problem with black to refer to africans. As a matter of fact, they are of the same meaning. The only difference is, one is in english and the other is in spanish. Anyhow, I find it rude to refer people by skin color. Instead, I use ethnic if i have to.

Like "mandingo" or "cafre"?

I don't like it when people use the n-word. When I lived in Minnesota, no one ever said it, but down here in Kentucky it's like an everyday word. I don't think I'll ever get used to that.

I really hate it when people call me a pussy though. Just because I don't want to do something doesn't mean that I'm a pussy!

"Wanna smoke pot with me?" No. "Pussy."

Ugh.

I hate my sister's boyfriend so much...

I hate to hear someone call somebody a loser. I know it's not a vulgar or obscene word but I've seen that word cut to the core of someone's heart like a double-edged knife. And it's already been mentioned but the word "pussy" is offensive to me also.
