I can see St. Helens from my bedroom window on a clear day.

Hearing there was activity on the mountain today, I went up to my highrise's roof deck for a better look. From there I had a terrific view of all the steam/ash pouring from the volcano. There's a chance it could become something more, but it's a bit cold up there to spend hours waiting.

I'm sure if it really worsens we'll be hearing about it on the news.

 Is it safe? Didn't that thing have a HUGE blast-radius the last time it went off?

Slightly off topic I know, but is that the Volcano the Transformer's crashed into only to be awoken 4 million years later by an eruption?

It's about 50 miles north of here. I think the only dangerous places, if it got worse, would be in the nearby river valleys. There's a lot of snow and ice that could melt and flood out those spots. Fortunately, St. Helens is in the center of a very sparsely populated area.

I'm being alert to any sign of earthquake, though. Well, more alert than usual. :-)

I've been mountainbiking on Mt St Helens many times... it is always very impressive and humbling. If you click on the link above and look down into the blast zone you'll see the Plains of Abraham - without snow its like riding into a lunar landscape.

Has the volcano been that active recently? I hope it doesn't get any worse.

I think I remember some light steam escaping last summer. It wasn't as much as what I'm seeing today. There are always mild earthquakes associated with St. Helens, the last one was late Sunday night (not anything that could be felt here in Portland).

Yes, it's been going nuts off and on for the last couple years. I was up there in 2004 the day there was a big earthquake and it started becoming active again. I was in a lava tube, below the mountain. :D
