I actually like the idea of coming out by simply saying "I'm in a relationship with a man", rather than attempting to make a huge media spectacle about it like the person this thread's about is doing.

Actually, I'd think it'd be nice if two closeted celebs, who were in a secret relationship, came out by doing photo spread in a magazine that's either wholesome or racy (think the Beckham's).

Ricky Martin didn't do it in a big way... just with a blog post on his own blog. He didn't sell the story to People. Melissa Ethridge just quietly mentioned it on stage at a political demonstration. Neil Patrick Harris just made a statement about it in the press when rumors were getting out of control.

It's when people like Adam Lambert have to make a HUGE stink about it... selling the "story" to the highest bidder and being a bit of a douche to the gay press.

I mean, I was pretty grossed out by Lance Bass's coming out story. Front of People Magazine and calling himself a "SAG - Straight Acting Gay." I think he's made up for it since, but MAN I thought he handled it poorly at the time.

Country music is all about telling a story that all the rednecks out there can relate to. I mean "I'm a little drunk and i'm calling you late at night to cry to you" is a massive hit song in that genre right now.

I have no idea how she'll be able to tell a story with her music that her fans will be able to relate to. I think she's committed career suicide for her line of work.

Have you ever LISTENED to country music? Every single song is telling a story about their husband/wife, their children, their religious faith etc. People like it because they're these famous people, yet are still down-to-Earth and are telling stories that the every-man out there can relate to.

after seeing The Dixie Chicks go thru hell for not being "American" enough... we all know this'll be an uphill battle.

It's no secret that country music fans are mostly all conservative republicans. If you do anything to insult or challenge their political or religious views, they will NOT like it.


The Dixie Chicks were very popular and had a name for themselves that allowed them to have the balls to say what they wanted, and they still had millions of fans that destroyed their albums, publically protested. and sent them death threats when they spoke out against W. Bush. I just don't think a complete has-been is going to be able to pull something like this off, i'm sorry; She's in Nashville, not liberal Hollywood.

Who the fuck cares HOW these people come out. Isn't is more important that they DO come out so that more people in the spotlight, however big or small, show that there is nothing wrong with being a gay person?

Before anyone comes down on Chely Wright for coming out so publicly with all the press mess - the country music world is one of the most homophobic there is aside from Rap/R&B. Middle America, that's who listens to country music. I don't particularly care HOW this woman came out, the sheer fact that she did, regardless of the books and CDs she wanted to sell, means a lot to THIS community.

It will be a good indicator to see if America is ready to buy books and CDs about/by a gay singer.

Don't sit there and bitch that these people are coming out in ways you don't deem worthy. You are taking for granted the fact that every time a new person in a "celebrity" role, again, big or small, comes out, it means one more person SEEN and HEARD.

Thank you Stacy. I could not have said it better myself. When i was growing up, no one was out publicly. Yeah we Had Rock Hudson and Liberace, but they took it to their graves. I think the only person out in that time was Elton John and he said he was bisexual.

Good for her! I know her name, but not her past hits, so I will definitely tune in to country radio to hear her new material. My interest has certainly been piqued.

Sure...I'm supportive of her as a gay woman that is coming out. I'm sure it has been a difficult decision both personally and professionally...especially given the nature of her music genre. That has never been my issue with this whole thing.

For me, this spectacle and hype created by her publicity agent booking her as a mystery guest on talk shows to make the big announcement, leaking tidbits of info to the press...playing into the media and public's curiosity and turning this into game of "guess the gay celeb"...ugh...just a tacky publicity stunt. I was critical of this maneuver before I found out who it was.

If she had booked the same talk shows and made an announcement on one of them without creating the mystery buzz beforehand, I would feel totally different about it. She would have gotten the publicity anyway...that comes naturally with celebrity status. (idk...maybe she's not a big enough celeb to have been able to have booked the talk shows the conventional way? I'd never heard of her before.) Anyway, she's doing it in a tacky way...Ricky didn't.

You really are a clueless gay man. Firstly, Rolling Stone is not a tabloid gossip magazine and they don't pay for its stories like People does. Secondly, being openly gay IS a career disadvantage in music industry. If you think that artists come out as gay for their career advantage, then you must be living in the fantasy gay world. It would be f**king great if we lived in a world where sexuality is not an issue, but we don’t, that's why most of gay artists have to stay closeted or they have to hide any trait that might be construed as "too gay". Clay Aiken lost A LOT of female fans after coming out and his last album only sold about 150000 copies. Lance Bass and Ricky Martin came out as gay when they no longer felt the need to sell records. Adam has been getting so much attention from gay and straight media because it's unusual to have someone young who is clearly aiming for mainstream success be so open about being gay at the beginning of their career. There really aren't enough visible young gays in the spotlight. I think that the gay community should just be glad for those artists who are ballsy enough to be openly gay in the fist place and stop trying to put extra weight on their shoulders.
