I was nine, and even at that age, I felt the writers had painted themselves into a corner, and had no idea what to do. So they must have said "Let's kinda make it look like they go to heaven...but make it vague and confusing."

I came into this thread to see if someone had listed Brokeback Mountain. I have to say that I agree with you. I left the theater irritated and upset at that ending, and I've never watched the movie again since.
And it's not because it doesn't have a 'fairy-tale happy ending'. I can't say why for sure...but something about it just frustrated me.
