Anybody here see The Bubble? I just watched it last night and am wondering what what others thought about it.

If you haven't seen it, don't read any further.

I'm really curious about your thoughts on the ending...

I just can't fully grasp why Ashraf chose the music store, of all places. He walked away so it seems his intended goal was not to take Noam with him, but then he didn't hesitate at the end.

Do you think Noam knew what was going to happen and wanted to be with him or did he hope to stop him?

If you want to understand The Bubble, read Romeo and Juliet.

i just watched this movie on netflix the other day, and i hadn't cried in a long time from a movie, but man.. that ending made me cry. pretty bad too lol. it just really got me.

like cynicus said, watch romeo and juliet. ashraf didn't want to kill noam, that's why he walked away from the music store. he loved him, and he knew he'd never be able to be with him, he knew that he'd never be accepted back in palestine. and he'd rather die than live out that life.

noam knew he had a bomb, but it didn't matter to him. he went to the guy he loved, bomb or no bomb, he wasn't going to let him just kill himself on the street alone, which is how he'd been all his life.

when he's speaking at the end of the movie he states that maybe now they can fly away to somewhere where they can just be happy, away from the wars, and hate. somewhere where they can just be together.

I think The Bubble is an extremely sad movie on a number of levels, I think cynicus has a point in that The Bubble has a very Romeo and Juliet tragic feel to it. It is also a sad commentary on the intolerance of gay lifestyles within Islam. The general intolerance of Palistinian/Israeli relations, and the difficulty to put the whole historical animosity between the 2 groups to rest. It's been a while since I watched the end of the movie but I think Ashraf felt guilty for his gay inclinations and love for Noam when his sister was killed by the israeli soldiers, he may have felt he had to regain what he saw as his honor from the "shame" of being a posterboy for good israeli/palistinian relations after his sister was killed. I think that Noam was trying to stop Ashraf from suiciding, and I think that Ashrif would have been content in simply commiting suicide by himself without taking anyone with him, Noam was probably colateral damage. It was a really good movie, but really sad. I had a lot of empathy for the characters because my best friend is Muslim and he's dealing with all the baggage of being gay and muslim. It's really hard.

Thanks... I read Romeo & Juliet many years ago and seen it as a play at least once. It didn't really occur to me to make that connection though as there wasn't that twist of who died first at the end, which is the part I remember most.

pai mei, I watched it on Netflix too and normally I get the tears, but with this movie I was just like, no, no, no, no, no, it can't end like this! I don't often get attached to characters so much that I talk to the TV, but I did this time!

It was a bit of an eye-opener for me. I knew that being a gay Muslim is probably a death sentence in many countries, but I also thought it was probably the same way in Israel... Perhaps not a death sentence, but it was not tolerated and not something you couldn't be open about.

yeah, i'm not sure how accepted it is in israel either, i'm interested in knowing. but i do know that tel aviv is an "international city" in a manner of speaking, and it has been referred to by many as being in it's own world, as in you travel an hour or two in any direction and it seems like an entirely different world you've stepped into.

i've always been curious how true that really was. i would love to visit tel aviv one day though, always been interested in seeing how the city really is.

but if u wanna watch more on netflix about being gay and muslim watch A Jihad For Love, it's a documentary about it, and about people (men and women) in the middle east.

that movie also led me to this amazing song too:
