As you know, Microsoft has at last decided to launch an ad campaign to counter Apple's "Mac vs. PC" commercials. The new Microsoft ads feature comedian Jerry Seinfeld with Bill Gates.

Here is what $300 million will buy you:

well this is the second thread on JUB discussing the first of a series of ad's both made by anti Microsoft people

The ads are made by anti Microsoft people?

no both threads lol

but i find it interesting that the only people posting this are anti Microsoft on here as well as every newspaper site reporting it here and its not even on tv here

i think this quote from the age sums it up

Even if the reaction was mostly negative, Microsoft's ad has clearly succeeded in getting people talking.

Can't argue with the "talking" quote. Maybe that's the plan, and subsequent ads will be more on target.

But I still don't get it.

Some people don't get it because it's just the first ad in what is going to be a long series of ads. Like those commercials that have a "story line", that's what these commercials are going to be. Where Seinfeld meets Bill Gates, and throughout the ad story, they become good friends at the end. Just like people will become good friends with their computers while spending time with them... or something to that effect. This ad alone wasn't the $300 million dollar ad, the entire series was 300 mil. Some people who have been looking at this ad in-depth are saying that this ad is supposed to liken using Vista with buying a new pair of shoes. At first they are not familiar and may feel uncomfortable, but after using it/them for awhile, you break it in and get used to it. That's what they say at least. I personally don't think the ad people thought about that THIS much, but what do I know.

And I don't want it to look like I'm supporting this ad campaign, because I would hate to get kicked out of the Official Apple Fanboi Club. I just wanted to help some of the people who are totally confused by what seems like an absolutely pointless ad campaign.

Those ad campaigns never worked. That's why they don't do them anymore.

Would some moderator please delete this thread?

Perhaps now is not the time to try to discuss anything relating to Microsoft (however positive), and I don't want valuable contributors to this board to end up getting themselves banned or otherwise disciplined over a silly discussion of the merits of an ad campaign.

The thread is a legitimate thread. There is nothing wrong with it and no reason to delete it. I can and did, however remove the off topic argument that didn't need to be here to begin with. Let's avoid making generalizations about one another and just have a discussion on the ad.

now...regarding the ad. it could be as mentioned above that it's a series of ads that are meant to be taken in context with one another and that just seeing one may not make sense. But since all we have is one ad at the moment we can't actually say much more than that. I don't get this particular ad either. that doesn't mean i hate MS. I still use it as my primary OS. it just means i don't get the ad. now i will say i hated seinfeld (the show) i never "got" that show either. ;)

I was never a fan of the Apple ads. Fortunately I got mine before I saw them or I might never have converted. Gotta say though that this MS ad really wouldn't tempt me back at all, quite the opposite in fact. If that is all they can come up with then they have far too much money to waste which might be better spent on developing an operating system that they could be proud of rather than trying to defend the indefensible.

this is the second one i assume they will take 30 second parts from it to use in smaller ads

its ok there's a firewall :)

I must be stupid or be an advertiser's nightmare as it still is just not working on me. I feel no desire to rush out and buy a PC with Vista on it. In fact if I wanted to sell a Mac I would be tempted to show those adverts!

OMG lol ok now that doesn't make me want to buy windows, but i thought it was a funny as hell commercial. that's odd too because it was so typical of seinfeld and i don't usually like him.
