'ello!

I have finished my move from windows to mac!
I now have an iBook G4, a Powermac G4 and an iMac G5.
I've always used Macs as I always made video yearbooks for the local elementary schools in Final Cut Pro and this has turned into a video editing career for me.

I use MSN for all my IM client as that is what my friends use.
I want to make the msn main window not open at startup, which is a setting i had on my old windows xp machine. Am i missing something? I cant find the checkbox!

Also, are there any alternatives to the msn client? I used aMSN when I was on Linux (tripple boot- Ubuntu/XP/OSx86)

Thanks in advance!!
Bernard.

I use Adium and it works great. Sort of like Trillian, but better IMO.

msn rocks on windows it just sucks on a mac

i would say use vista on your mac since but since you are using a g4 and g5 it wont run natively

maybe you should buy a pc ;) lol

as for it opening at startup just keep looking through you settings i am sure youll find it
tools >options>

I use Adium for my msn messenger client and for my Yahoo client. Never had a problem with it. I also have Skype for audio / video chat a it works across platforms.

No problems with aMsn here, although the Cam support is a bit shaky.

Woohoo! Welcome to Mac - you won't regret making the move.

I use Msn for Mac, because aMsn just stopped working for me one day. And Adium was starting to annoy me. aMSN was great when it worked though!

Another vote for Adium here.

To stop a program opening at login then you can right click on its icon in the dock and "Open at Login". There will be a little tick next to it. It's the same to make a program open at login as well.

Adium lacks features, such as custom titles, which are pretty important considering most people use them. Visually, the program is very pretty and customizable.

aMSN is what I've been using for the last few months, haven't had any problems with it.

since yesterday i've been using Adium and it's missing abunch of things of the real msn for mac. I'm going to try aMSN tonight.

WYSIWYG- I do use Skype, but I also use MSN as that is the network most my friends use.

ZeroPoint84- I've actually been using the Mac platform since Mac OS 8.

Kins123- I want the program to open but with no window to appear.

Thanks for everyones comments!

I've found aMsn's preferences can get corrupt and cause that issue - I've only seen it happen on Intel Macs to date. Just delete the preferences file and all should be fine.

aMSN crashes every time i recieve a message.
I tried deleting the pref's but that didn't work.

I guess i'll be moving back to Microsoft Messenger.

Regarding aMSN, it is beta. I had a client install it and the next time she used her intelMac everything on the desktop was gone. It showed up in aMSN pref file. Thats what you get with beta.

To not automatically start go to system prefs>accounts > Login items and deselect Microsoft Messenger.

You can also use Proteus 4.15b to access MSN Yahoo and AOL IM but it won't do video.

I've tried Adium but didn't like it.

Mercury, fire, JBuddy or Mac Messenger (PPC only) are others. I've tried Mercury and hated it.

Go to http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/
and do a search MSN.

On windows you can make MSN Messenger (Windows live messenger?) open but not display the login window/contacts. It was enabled to get this way by selecting a checkbox with something like "Open the messenger main window upon opening windows live messenger.", I would uncheck that and would be happy.

But on Microsoft Messenger Mac, i dont have this option.

This is what i;m trying to do, but if there are other messengers that have same/more functionality, have a good GUI and are half reliable (Beta's can sometimes be pretty reliable)

Sheep - I don't adore Adium either; lacks a lot of features and was really buggy. Wouldn't keep me connected. I'll try the ones you suggested also.

Well, I guess Gates can't write well for the Mac. What you can do is start msn normally and then close the window (command-W). Command is the apple key. The window will go into the dock but when ssomeone comes on line you should see the blue message on your screen.
The only reason I continue to use it is cos you can send files with it. But it has some big bugs in it.

You can also send files with Adium which will also act as a client for yahpoo, AIM and ICQ and lets you use Growl notifications.

Start msn messenger click on msn messenger in the menu-select prefrences-click on general-uncheck automatically startup messenger
