Mubarak pledges to step down

In my opinion, Mubarak must go and now, and that includes his appointed VP. I would be willing to have certain military leaders step up with a three month deadline to create a more democratic government with representatives of all the parties taking part.

^ Were I Obama, I'd tell Mubarak the aid is cut off until he steps down, and recommend he ditch the VP he just appointed and replace him with Elbaradei, so when Mubarak resigned a qualified civilian would be in charge. Then elections could take place in September as scheduled.

The VP chosen by Mubarak appears to be a very dodgy character indeed.

The protesters have drawn up a list of 25 people to negotiate a new political system, but it doesn't include Mr El Baradei.

For the list, see Robert Fisk's report here

Interesting.

The appearance of that list gives Obama some leverage: he wouldn't be standing outside picking someone, but pointing to figures already picked by the Egyptian people, and telling Mubarak to go. I think this is a perfect opening to get hardnosed with Mubarak, and tell him flat out that for every day he stays, Egypt loses that day's worth of aid -- over $4 million per day.

The aid mainly goes to the military, which goes to buy arms from American companies, which goes to ........ Well, you get the drift!

"No Arab or Muslim can tolerate any meddling in the security and stability of Arab and Muslim Egypt by those who infiltrated the people in the name of freedom of expression, exploiting it to inject their destructive hatred," SPA quoted King Abdullah as saying.

"As they condemn this, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its people and government declares it stands with all its resources with the government of Egypt and its people," the agency added.
(from the above article)

Wow. His Saudi Majesty is a little out of touch. I bet this has a lot to do with Mubarak being stubborn.

Exactly.

At this point, it represents a bulwark against similar demonstrations against the Faux house of Saud.

If Mubarak falls, Abdullah is terrified that it will wash over into 'their' country as well.

My God.

What happens if people decide to overthrow a completely artificial royal family set up and propped up as puppets to the US and British oil interests?

Tick tock. Tick tock.
