When you look at straight guys in contests, some are closeted gays. Several of the most famous have been gay, but they remain in the closet while competing because gays are less likely to get sponsors from the supplement manufacturers, and are less likely to get in the magazines. The result is that the openly gay one are not trying to be in the big competitions.
I think you are correct that the big contests emphasize size more than proportion and appearance, while gays are trying to look great. Many gays of course are or have been on steroids, some legally as an HIV treatment.

If they are smaller, then perhaps the standards are the reason. While the Gay Games is fantastic, and something I completely support, it is self selective and thus the number of top quality competitors across the events drop. I have met a lot of guys that have medalled at the games, and while they are good, they would probably not medal in international tournaments that were open to all.
