About a week ago, my computer kept on restarting every 5 minutes when I was on it. And on Sunday, it restarted again, and I wasn't even able to get past the MS-DOS screen, and it said "PLEASE INSERT DISK TO BOOT SYSTEM"

...a disk that I didn't have b/c it was at my parents house. So yesterday, my sister brought me the CD, and I put it in my computer. SO I finally got onto the actual Windows XP part of it, and and it was still screwed up, and after about an hour, it shut down AGAIN. So, when I turned my computer on, and it went to that 'Boot Computer' thing, I pressed 'R' so I could go to the Windows recovery program. So it went to the program (Cicero V.15 'Windows XP Home with SP1 Recovery CD', to be exact), and I 'recovered' it, but then when I went onto XP again, there a whole lot of other problems (a long with the restarting thing still...).

Here's the problems:
- The task bar will NOT display the programs that I have open, so when I minimize them, they dissapear.

- Windows Media player has an 'internal error' (and the icon looks different for some reason)

- The Help and support window, will not open up.

- The User Accounts window opens up, but the window is empty

- RealPlayer also has an 'error'

- Windows Update will open, but the window is empty when it does

- I cannot move any of the files from my desktop into any folders

- Windows XP takes forever to start up

- Copy and pasting doesn't work

- I can't add any web pages to my 'favorites'

SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!!! I'm freaking out!! I don't know what to do :(

First Thing: BACKUP UP YOUR DATA!!!!!!!

The repetitive rebooting could be caused by a virus or it could be a problem with the power supply. If the power supply is going bad (this is inside the PC not from the electric company) every time it fluctuates it will reboot. This could have corrupted the hard drive. I'd first do a full virus scan to make sure you're clean. You should also do spyware scan to get rid of that crap if you have any. If everything is clean and you're still rebooting it's most likely a hardware problem. Then you'll have to have it fixed. You'll probably have to reinstall the OS as well unfortunately. If you don't have a virus scanner go to www.avast.com where you can a good one for free. You have to register but it costs nothing.

Recently my daughter's computer did that, and fortunately we had a new harddrive and had it installed as the master just in time. We almost lost everything. One of the things we have learn you cannot allow a harddrive get so loaded with programs there is no breathing room. Good luck.

Backup and reformat, no you don't have a choice.

I only install software that I use and I have 100GB free on a 160GB hard drive (no, 60GB isn't just of software).

My reply is just reinstall the software....if you have infor you want to save, just see if you can put it on a disk or cd if you have a rw cd. If there is nothing you want to save then FDISK and Format the hard drive and install the software...starting over may be your best thing to do...too many viruses and worms out there that can fuck your system up!! best wishes and go for it! JR

as said above: backup, format, reinstall.

BUT .. before you play back or access *ANY* of the backupped data, install a virus scanner before!

OK, I'll re-format it. It's been a while since this computers been cleaned out anyways.

Thanks everyone (*8*)

Another thing that can cause a computer to restart a lot is overheating. Make sure you have the computer in a well ventilated area and not closed up in a tight cabinet, and that your internal fans are working properly.

the other things he says aren't by far any consequence of overheating, so i'd rules this one out.

i tend to save reformating and reinstalling windows as a last ditch effort. but there is so much going on there i agree with everyone else there isn't much else you can do. Can you back up your data? are you able to save stuff to a CD? or another hard drive?
