My Computer Was Attacked!

Yesterday I was on Yahoo IM chatting with a guy I had met on JUB. I had signed into JUB also on another tab. Suddenly, a window popped up stating that some file in Mozilla had failed. I acknowledged it so the window would close and I can continue my conversation online. Then all Hell broke loose!

Another window in the lower right corner of my screen appeared stating that my computer was infected with some virus and asked if I wanted to block it. Of course I answered "YES." That caused a web page to open where I could purchase anti-virus software. I also noticed in my system tray that a green icon for Antivir Solution Pro had appeared. That is the same software that was on the web page the other virus warning window opened up and recommended a purchase. I don't have Antivir Solution Pro on my computer. My anti-virus software is provided through my Internet Provider and that isn't it.

Lots of other windows starting opening up warning me that my computer had been infected and if I wanted to use my anti-virus software which led back to Antivir Solution Pro. I realized what was happening, did the opposite of what was expected from a normal response and scanned my computer using my known good anti-virus software.

Six viruses and three spywares were found which were all removed. Rebooted the computer and found those pesty windows still there warning me of a virus infection. Opened up my known good anti-virus software to learn that some file was trying to make system changes and permission was needed. Of course I denied it. All this went on for about 15 minutes until I just followed the path to that file.

I learned that it had been created about three hours earlier which is when all this shit started. I tried deleting the file, but was denied. I have administrative privileges on this computer and was denied, what the hell? I eventually ended up changing the name of the file and moving it to a new location.

Scanned my computer again to find another virus. That was cleaned up.

I forgot to mentioned that I was denied access to the Internet other than that web page where it is recommended that I purchase Antivir Solution Pro. I later learned that my Internet connection had been changed to LAN.

Finally, after several hours of battle, I was able to reach my Internet homepage; however, this morning as I started up my computer another virus was found. I have done a System Restore, hoping that will restore all my previous settings.

My computer is working now, but it is taking a great deal longer to start up. There are probably things I have not found yet that need to be corrected.

Anyway, here are my questions:

Have any of you experienced anything like this? If so, what did you do to restore your computer to its previous performance?

What can I do to prevent this kind of attack from happening again?
 
what did you use to get rid of the virus? i am asking because that "anti virus pro" is the real virus.
the moment where you answered "yes" to block the virus, you infected yourself.

you might try the usual anti malware tools to get rid of it, but your best option is to do a complete reinstall.

I used the anti-virus software provided by my Internet Provider to get rid of the viruses.

Also, what am I to do a complete re-stall on? All the software on my computer?
 
I've picked up the same virus three times in spite of using decent antivirus protection. There's another thread somewhere already detailing the issue.

If you have another computer, I would put the ^ url in your bookmarks so you can access the information in case of a repeat attack.
 
You picked up some malware. Download Spybot. It's free. Also download the free updates. That will get rid of it.
 
If you got nailed with Antivirus 2010..........good luck.

you were scammed, always close browser windows that say you are infected or shit like that, they are all fakes. A browser cannot tell if you are infected with a virus.

Better yet, use firefox and enable a pop up blocker so you don't get popups.
 
Exactly the same happened to me a few days ago. I blamed another site on which I had just downloaded a vid. However I think I had a tab to JUB open at the same time!
I did not accept their offer of a scan and operated my AVG scan. It detected a Trojan Horse and put it in the 'vault'. However when I rebooted and went on-line I was immediately re-infected!
I then went to System Restore for the previous day and since then fingers crossed I have been OK. But it does look as if the virus came from JUB!
 
No it didn't. For supporters there isn't even remote content on this website.
 
I use AVG free, Malwarebytes and Super Anti Spyware on all of my computers, I still have yet to have a major problem. (Knock on Wood)...

I also use CCleaner/ATF Cleaner. These programs clean internet history, cookies etc... So I always use this before I run a scan on my PC's... If there is a major problem especially Processing wise, I use HiJackThis...

Edit: Its always best to stay offline during an infection. Also its best to do these scans in Safe Mode.
 
I got hit with the same problem last weekend. I was able to remove it, but just in case I system restored and all is well with my laptop. I'm creating restore points more proactively now.

Lol, same thing happened to me several weeks ago (not from JUB tho) and I did the same thing (after like freaking out for about 30min). I System Restored for the previous day and have been OK since then.
 
Guys, you are not going to believe this!

I was at work yesterday, got bored and decided to sign into Yahoo IM. I use Yahoo Messenger for the Web-BETA both at work and at home. My computer at work got infected with the same virus I had experienced the day before at home!!! :grrr: :grrr: :grrr:

Luckily, I recognized the virus immediately and did not click on anything. I rebooted the computer and ran a virus scan. I had that computer back up and running in about an hour.

I don't trust Yahoo's web based messenger right now. I sent Yahoo an email telling them about my experiences and that two computers at two locations were infected with this virus when signed into Yahoo Messenger for the Web-BETA.

Has anyone else had any problems when using Yahoo Messenger for the Web-BETA?
 
Well, I've been a YM user for a long time and I have no problem with it. For precaution, don't click on suspicious ads. Look closely before you click it. And DON'T CLICK ON THE UNKNOWN LINKS that one of your many friends sent. That was a really popular tactic on YM before. Those viruses/spywares are so sneaky nowadays.
 
I use Firefox. If any unwanted window pops up on me, I ctrl-alt-del and use the Task Manager to close Firefox. If you get infected, you should reboot in the safe mode and use Spybot and/or Malwarebytes to clean things up.
 
the simple "knowledge" is not to click on any weird popups. if they would look like mac os UI, more than enough mac guys would click on them as well.
and that that can be dangerous is just being proven once again with the current PDF exploit that it is equally easy to open a mac.
