My first credit card...

^ Who do you go through? I didn't see that option in my account pages for mine (Capital One) - just the ability to email monthly statements as far as that area is concerned. Hm.

I'll just say this, Credit Cards are not evil and people should not hate them. The only reason people get in to trouble with credit cards is because they don't know how to behave themselves; they forget that they have to be paid off eventually and all they do is charge and charge and charge without taking into consideration that they're trying to live above what they actually can afford

There have been so many posts on this, that I hope I am not repeating something that someone else has said. Use your card as you prefer, i.e. for small, large, or both types of purchases. Just remember that you owe the money, so don't use the card to spend money that you do not have unless you are willing to pay the interest penalty.

When it comes to your payments, you only owe what is printed on the statement that you receive at the end of your billing period. If you use the card before the end of the billing period and the charge does not appear on the statement, you will not be billed for it until your next statement.

Some people spend recklessly with credit cards and quickly get in over their heads. If you keep track of your spending and do not spend more than the money you have on hand to pay the bill, you will never have a problem. I use mine even to buy a Subway sandwich. I prefer it to cash.

If you can pay the bill on line, do that. You will be charged interest if your payment is delayed in the mail.

Update, hit the 6 month mark and counting. Since then I have also got approved for a small credit line for $250 (but bumped me after a month to $300) through GE moneybank. I've been keeping them paid in time, and have no current debt! Yay for me. So I just did a new credit report check...
and the results are in....

Having good credit history feels good! :-) .

Congratulations, I still remember getting my first credit card (which I still have). If there are expenses that your parents reimburse you for, that's a great time to use the credit card. I'm thinking of things like books for school, car repairs, etc. Then pay the credit card off immediately with the money your parents give you or just give your parents the bill and have them pay it directly. This way you can build an active credit history without really taking a risk.

By the way, $1000 limit is fairly small for a student. If you start using the card and paying on time, they will raise it fairly soon.

You may also want to see if Capital One has an option to automatically take the whole monthly balance from your bank account. I do this with Citibank so that I am sure to always pay the bill on time. In addition, it forces you to know you have money before you buy something, otherwise your bank draft will bounce. Essentially I use my credit card like a debit card, but I never have to worry about bouncing checks because someone stole my debit card number and made unauthorized charges. Just one hassle I don't need to worry about. I always have plenty of time to review the credit card statement before the draft is made from my bank account.

Just use the card for emergencies and no gas, food, rent, porn are NOT included! LOL My sister when she went to college began to do this and before she knew she had $8,000 in debt! It is simply not worth the hassles.

Be smart!

i cut mine in half over 25 years ago no regrets there bad for your health

different strokes for different folks I spose - this was already debated in this thread... :). Depends on how responsible you are ;)

As I posted over at TechIMO forums I visit, I thought I would post here also...

burn that card - or bury it somplace where you will never use it.

credit cards are as clear an evil as we have in the American financial community.

they will rip you off worse than any casino will, the odds are in their favor and under the contracts they can rewrite them at will. You will get burned.

i make $ with my discover card, i pay the balance off each month and they pay me 1% to 5% of my purchases. using credit can work in your favor.
