My friend at work is going insane because of Obama. What can I do?

That's because Obama fares badly in comparison.

Are you kidding with that?!

Did you go to American schools? What were you taught about FDR and the opposition he faced with the New Deal?

Republicans in 1932 onward were mad as hornets and couldn't stand FDR or his programs. Not only did FDR have significant opposition in Congress to deal with, he had a conservative Supreme Court that invalidated several of his New Deal programs. But the point is he forged ahead with them anyway, bombarding Congress with an avalanche of legislation and getting much of it passed.

Obama whines about Republicans but the truth is walked into the Oval Office with a supermajority in both Houses of Congress and a severely weakened opposition. And yet the legislation he's responsible for is garbage.

you are right, because the world hasn't changed at all in 70 years.

Oh it's changed.

Upon entering office, Obama had easier opportunity to push through Democratic principled legislation. And in fact Congress gave Obama most of what he asked for. Unfortunately for America, what Obama asked for is garbage.

The proof is in the results.

Give your friend a truly good reason to go insane, have him watch The Obama Deception. That ought help him out a ton! There's even a link on YouTube to the full vid, just search for ChangeDaChannel .

The Obama Deception?

HA! HA! HA!

Produced by Alex Jones, an insane right wing extremist. He makes Rush Limbaugh appear liberal.

That's about as believable as Jerry Falwell's "The Clinton Chronicles". Remember that one or are you too young?

Easier? Really? Based on what? Would you care to identify any facts that would remotely support this silly assertion? When FDR took office, the country was already close to 3 1/2 years into the Great Depression. People were desperate for radical changes. Obama took office only months after this recession started. FDR had larger majorities in both houses of Congress than Obama did. http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2010/03/obamas-no-fdr-nor-does-he-have-fdrs.html FDR did not have to contend with the use of the filibuster the way Obama has. Indeed, under FDR, a filibuster meant talking endlessly.

But why let facts get in the way of yet another, irrational, Obama-hate rant?

Obama was swept into office on the note of Change!

And the Change! that Americans wanted wasn't a result of only the recession, and in fact Obama voted for and urged Democrats to vote for the Bush/Paulson solution to what happened a few months before he took office -- that wasn't what the Change! was about; the Change! was supposed to be from everything Bush Republican. And that was eight years - somewhat longer than the 3 1/2 you cite that Roosevelt was charging in on. Furthermore, the Obama Change! was also supposedly from the Clinton years because of all that unbelievably awful polarization and division that Hillary would continue and Obama would deliver us from. So the way Obama and his supporters framed it, the country was desperate for radical change from the previous 16 years, not just a few months. Now of course that gets revised as needed.

Facts? That's what you call that manipulation of information?

Cloture rules were revised in the 70s to reduce the required votes from 2/3 to 3/5. When FDR took over, he did not have a filibuster proof majority. Obama did.

And FDR immediately took a leadership role when he entered office. He didn't ask an incohesive Congress to write something for him to sign and take off campaigning again, he took control and sent over what he wanted.

Well given that you are someone who supposedly taped his boyfriend and some trick in your bedroom without them apparently being aware of the camera (or were aware depending on the sentence in your CO&R post), you aren't the best person to be reassuring them that Big Brother isn't after them.

I'm calling it.

Alex Jones is neither left or right. I'm unsure of how you got that information but anyone who listens to his show and see's his documentaries would know this. Alex has been making films before Obama, even strongly criticizing Bush as well. Two such documentaries "ENDGAME: Blueprint For Global Enslavement" and "TerrorStorm" are both made with clear and strong criticism against Bush.

Breaking the left/right paradigm is very important to realize that the entire political system is corrupted. Both sides are compromised and unlawful. There is no hope from the President right now, the only hope we have is a peaceful sort of information revolution of understanding and learning and finding out.

You can say to him, "well, I'm gay, and I have to deal with the fact that my liberties have been infringed on every day too, but somehow I manage."

And as far as Reagan goes, he was a swell guy...you know, except for the whole ignoring AIDS thing and letting all those people die.

He listens to conservative talk radio all day, when he first arrives at work until he leaves. All day. Every day.

Any advice would be appreciative. lol.

That stuff will melt your brain. Tell your friend he needs to get a life.

I think this is one of the bad fall outs of technology.
In 1997 cable, and satellite still in its infancy didn't reach the number of people in much of the world. Satellite help bring cable TV to many remote areas and cable news changed over the last decade with more choices then just CNN or maybe BBC. All networks expanded news including the big traditional broadcast networks. Radio changed to as it got rid of local programming in favor of syndication.
Now, all of the sudden almost a talk radio host like Beck who was only getting local air time on "powerhouse" AM970 TAMPA which can be heard about 60 miles around Tampa during the day and had to turn its signal down at night so you could only hear Beck within a 40 mile radius of Tampa Fl you can hear him via syndication, satellite/cable to all those remote ` hollers and valleys where his public is afraid and his audience expands greatly. Preaching to the choir. No matter if 9-11 happened or not but technology aided this expansion.
Mainly this is the same group who is all up for saying that kid playing too many violent video games causes them to become obsessed and the need to ban these type of video games.
Watching violent/horror movies causes one to become the next son of Sam or Ed Gwein, so these movies need to be banned too.
Or music. Listening to certain genera in excess causes one to commit suicide, sacrifice animals, go out and fuck a HO, or become cop killers. They are in favor of banning this music.
..But when it comes to listening to non-stop radical political fear mongers and hate, don't you touch that because that is the truth. Its different then movies and music at this time.
Critical thinking goes out the window, if there was ever any in the first place. Facts and figures have no place and even with multiple sources prove them wrong you can't convince anyone to say "I was wrong". They don't care if its wrong to them its right.

I've seen my Father who on occasion watched Fox news and used to be a more tolerant man go hog wild to watching Fox News non-stop every waking minute. He never changes the station. He wasn't like that a couple years ago. He believes every thing they say. I cannot believe it. The channel never goes off Fox even when he surfs the cable --- Fox is every other flick of the remote.
He is like a addict, obsessed with this shit. I ask him when he expresses a view on a topic to cite a reference. He doesn't need to because he saw it on Fox and its the truth.
Strange because my Dad would tell me a few years ago that "Judas Priest would warp my brain". It did not nor was it the only music that I listened to, and nor did most of my friends or I believe what they were saying in the first place".

This isn't a unique mindset I don't believe to my Father. I saw it with people who listened to non stop talk radio on the AM band many times.
If you can become obsessed to where certain types of music, movies, books, & video games change ones behavior then certainly so can bullshit cable pundits rather extreme right or left. Its just that the majority is right because AM radio is still the main venue for delivery and frankly its just not that powerful of a media source in this day in age for most outside of the target audience at a low cost and high return to produce or syndicate.

I mean why would you want to sit and listen to someone complain about Obama and how terrible things are in the country all day long "every single day"?

Everytime you speak to him all he talks about his how awful Obama is and how wonderful Ronald Reagan is. He is obsessed with Ronald Reagan.

I say to him, "So freaking what? What can you do about it?"

He says, "Well... we can take to the streets is what we can do! Our freedoms and liberties are at stake! We need Reagan now! We need Reagan! Reagan showed us how to do it!"

I mean you can't even talk with him without him complaining about Obama and how he's destroying America!

I say well just try to think about something else. Get your mind off of it. He says, "How can I? My freedoms and liberties are at stake! He's trying to take away everything I have!"

Guys he tells me that there is no way that Obama will get re-elected as bad as he is. It just will not happen. But if Obama does get re-elected I think my friend is actually going to go insane. I think he will need mental help.

Any advice would be appreciative. lol.

Very simple advice.

Ask him to list what is different about his life and how he has been actually affected (not mentally, but affected in terms of his living standards and/or family situations) due to Obama being in office.

Have him make a list what is actually different about his life now vs then, and see what he says.

You have to convince him without actually saying it that the paranoia is all in his head and hopefully after that exercise, he will see that it is rightwing talk radio that is stirring up the hornet's nest over nothing and that nothing has changed in his life, at all.

Listen and Learn

I already have. The list:

1. Obama does not know how to lead like Ronald Reagan.
2. He is not protecting our boarders
3. He is not doing enough to keep us safe. (My friend does not feel safe at all.)
4. He does care about the military.
5. The whole health care thing is bad.
6. He does not know how to lead like Ronald Reagan.
7. He wants to destroy the constitution.
8. He does not want to drill for oil. (Reagan always wanted to.)
9. He did not give a speech at Arlington cemetery on Memorial Day so he's Un-American and not like Reagan. Reagan was American.
10. He wants illegal immigrants in this country.
11. He has no birth certificate.
12. He wants to take away our freedoms.
13. He's not tough with our enemies the way Ronald Reagan was.
14. He wants to end the two wars we have now.
15. He does not know how to lead like Ronald Reagan.

And none of those things answer how HIS life has changed since Obama has been in office.
