Lets not forget that Ryan, whom I happen to know, did not want the Speakership, but reluctantly took it, after "Boner" imploded, in an attempt to serve, and hopefully "heal" his party.

He was also Romney's running mate, and that didn't work out so well.

I do not agree with his politics, but I do have to admire him for the stands that he's taken, against the far right fringe "Tea Party" members of The House, and now the GOP's nominee, who is far worse than the congressional fanatics.

The GOP will have some real Come to Jesus time after the loss. They have been infected by a virus of their own welcoming, actually twice.

First, they welcomed religious Fundamentalists to the table, pretty much under the Nixon years, when it made great sense to drive a wedge in the South and exploit the new disaffection among Democrats who resented Civil Rights in the Democratic platform. That boon to the GOP has come at a price of the long haul, as it perpetually put the GOP in the position of a love-hate relationship with the rest of the baggage that came along with the Fundamentalists, namely throwback positions on women's rights, evolution, and separation of church and state.

The end result is a GOP less united about fiscal policy and somewhat a slave to rhetoric on social policy that pushes moderate Republicans further from the fold.

The second wave was of course the Tea Party, and once in the bloodstream, no defenses appear effective. Trump is just the latest symptom of this extremism, and the next manifestation will be interesting to observe. The religious right is already giving signs of pulling at the reins, and I predict will lead the wagon perhaps away from the GOP to something new. if that divorce is coming, I welcome it, as it will help isolate the crazies and perhaps galvanize the sane voters to become more active in defeating them.

Paul Ryan's rise is a direct result of those early strategies to exploit the religious defection in the South from the Democrats and his dilemma now, a testament to how insincere the religious element of the GOP is. They aren't outraged about Bill Clinton's past; they simply cannot admit that it is still all about fear of blacks, and wishful thinking about turning back abortion and evolution. Two out of three of those, GOP leaders cannot even utter.

I'm sorry, but I don't see personal integrity in Paul Ryan so much as Machiavellian political instincts. He didn't want to be speaker because it screwed with his ambitions... politically, he has the temperament and personal appeal but his message is 95% on the toxic side. His governing philosophy would be bad for the vast majority of Americans... Donald Trump is toxic but the message is unfiltered and raw. We see the real values of the Republican Party unmasked. Be it Ryan, Ted Cruz or any other "conservative" party leader the actual policies would be nasty for the poor, middle class...just about everyone except the wealthy, religious right, or Tea Party. But it would be unseen on the surface, corroding from the inside.

I actually do concede that Kyanimal's impression of Ryan is accurate. And, to the degree that showcasing the wrong thing hurts his chances of succeeding with his conservative agenda, he's doing the canny thing politically.

However, I doubt not that his views are inherently anti-gay, anti-diverse, anti-poor, and anti-environment. That said, I believe Ryan believes in his positions, and I can respectfully disagree and oppose them. In the case of most other leaders, I cannot respectfully disagree, as they don't seem to merit the respect.
