I didn't like going to the big box guys because of their politics anyways so I started going to a smaller chain. I don't go often, but when I do I go to Ace Hardware because they actually have employees that know their stuff and can give me ideas to make my ideas work.

Besides they have a much wider selection of items in store which is nice.

My first choice is ALWAYS Home Hardware. I love those guys because they know their stuff. My next choice is my local RONA because the girls there (yup, I said girls) always know what I need and the right tools for the job. So smart.

Are those chain stores or local?

I went to a 140 year old family run hardware store up till a year ago when it closed to make way for a road widening project.

Our local lumber yard usually has everything I need. Walmart probably has lower prices, but I shop there for nearly everything else. The feed store often has needed things and guys in tight Wranglers too.

I always had one that I went to, it wasn't a chain store and it always seemed to have what I needed. I have since moved and the best I can find is a family owned chain like Aco or Ace.
I could wonder around in Home Depot for hours.

They're a chain and have been around longer than I can remember. Every town had one, and I'm guessing they're just as popular as ever. I go to the one a few blocks away from where I live quite regularly. If they don't have it in the store, I can order it online and have it in as little as a week. As far as I know, it's a Canadian-only thing. I don't think they've expanded into the States.

I now go to a farm supply store for my needs. It's called Rural King. They don't carry a lot of electrical or plumbing supplies. Just the basic repair stuff. For fixtures I'll go to Lowe's

What are 'big box guys' and what are their 'politics'?

I buy hardware stuff from various small local places, and my preferences are usually determined by price.

They are generally far right wing American owners with a strong anti-union agenda.

I like the Home Depot close to me. A few hot studs work there - especially in the "Lumber Department" in the AM. Boy - the muscles on the one due give me a hard on when I see him. I've flirted with him at least one and when I see him I usually say "Hi".

We have locally owned ACE Hardware stores around here. Our local one is callled Chubby’s ( I know) it’s our first go to for anything g for our house. They used to have a store charge and they would bill you at the end of the month. I never go to any box store for anything around here.

Home Depot use to be my go to because I like that they offered same sex marriage benefits before they had to and I liked their National Guard policy. If you were in the NG and you made say $2,000 a month at Home Depot, but got called up to serve and the NG only paid you $1,750 a month, Home Depot would give you the other $250.

Somewhere along the line the owner or one of the owners went far far right and got rid of all the stuff I liked and have gone on talk shows using Trump language in regards to liberals and progressives. Even saying don't shop at his stores he don't want us.

As for Ace (where I shop now) they pissed me off when their store refused to sell to the water protesters, but corporate came out and said that was the store manager doing what the police asked him to do without asking HQ. I don't know if it is true, but they started reselling to the protesters quickly so I lean on believing them.

Locally owned Ace or Lowes---don't go to Homo Depot---owned by a right wing fool---so skip it---

Hardware store?

You should be able to do everything with a roll of Number 9 fence wire, a roll of Duct tape and a pound of 2 inch spiral nails.
