The time has arrived for my biannual computer upgrade and this time I decided to go all out, especially in the motherboard department. I've been upgrading my chassis and cooling system as well as buying new HDD's over the past few months in preparation for the upgrade.

I got my CPU last week, an Intel Core i7 920 D0 2.66 GHz

My MoBo, a Gigabyte GA-EX58 Extreme, and RAM, a 6GB Corsair 1600 MHz DDR-3 Kit, will be arriving on Thursday, and I couldn't be any more excited if I tried.

I'm holding off on getting a new GFX Card until the GeForce GT300 Series are released in December.

My geek juices are flowing like a raging river in expectation.*|*:sex:

That's hot, lol!

Great post. Nice to see things in progress. And from a purely aesthetical point-of-view, I like the look of that motherboard. You're going to be a lucky mofo with a great mobo!

Damn I'm drooling over that mobo. It just so beautiful. And for christ's sake, biannual computer upgrade???Where did you place all those old parts? resell I guess?

Edit : On side note, wow it's tri sli. I wanna test it with latest 3 5series x2 ati cards. :p

I decided on this specific MoBo because of its massive overclocking ability, seeing as the i7 920 D0 I bought can be OC'ed to 150% of its stock clock with little trouble (if you have a proper MoBo).

I would prefer 3 of the nVidia GeForce GT395 that are being released in December, if I could find a small nuclear reactor to power them, as well as about $2300  to afford them. I'll instead settle for a single GT380. :)

oooooh very nice. i've been wanting to upgrade for several months. my old PIV-3 ghz ht. But...i've got 4 ide hdd and 1 sata. the new mobos only have one ide connection so i've been putting it off.

Two more days....

Trust me, ditch the IDE's ASAP. You won't regret it, some of the newer SATA drives get sustained data transfer rates of 125 MB/s or more, an IDE disc gets maybe 15-20 MB/s if you are very lucky. Prices per GB have also gotten extremely low on the larger (750GB-1TB) drives.

What the heck is the giant thing in the middle of the board, si that a fanless heatsink thing or something?

Yup, it is designed to draw hot air out the back of the case passively through convection. It also doubles as a water block if you want to go for really extreme cooling, thought water cooling will be unnecessary unless you really want to OC to the extreme (as in 4.3 GHz plus).

As a result of the piss poor supplier Gigabyte chose to represent them in South Africa (my chosen MoBo would only have arrived on 17 Dec), I have decided to switch to Asus, more specifically this:

The Asus Rampage II Extreme

The best part of it all is: I get it Monday morning!

Sucks cause it's a monogamous relationship. :( I was ending up just buying an Alienware so it will be upgraded to the max so I can play The Sims 3 on it and not worry about lag, but when I saw the price of those computers I almost fainted.

^^ ya they are crazy expensive with those added frills like extra harddrives, extra memory, spiffy chasis. As you don't know how to assemble yourself, the only alternative I can think of to get the bang for your buck is to look for a small neighborhood shops which sells generic computers and ask them to customized - better gpu and cpu. Normally, they'll do it without addition cost. Even if they do, for sure, it will still be way below Alien/Voodoo prices.

Well, its up and running, but I'm gonna wait until the weekend when I have the time to really test the system out.

No pics either as my camera is busted.

Finally I got some pics to show you guys!
