My online friend may have committed suicide last night

My online friend who lives in Des Moines, Iowa started getting really depressed lately and told me he wants to leave this world. He even told me last night he bought some sleeping pills and was thinking of taking them. He lives alone and I told him to at least write a note for his parents who live in another country. What should I do if he did? Should I call 911 or something to check on him? I have his address.
 
If you believe it is possible that the does it .. call 911 or the local authorities.
 
Thanks. I live in another state so I'll give the local police a call to see if maybe they can check on him.

Yes. If you are not far, go and visit him as well.
How old is he?
 
You seem like a very decent guy and if you have any doubts then
yes call 911 the emergency services would much rather deal with
a genuine caring friend calling even if your friend is ok .
I hope he is ok please keep us up to date my thoughts are with you .
 
I agree. It's a serious matter. Even if he is fine and didn't take any pills, I'd rather you know that than just wonder without knowing.
 
Thanks guys. I called the local police where he lives this morning and they just called me a little while ago and told me they found him alive but he's in critical condition at the hospital now. He's just 22 years old and he took some sleeping pills. They found him just in time. He lives in Iowa and I'm on the East Coast and I just don't have the money to visit right now. Do you think the hospital could tell me his status if I call?
 
If you explain that you are the online friend who called the police - and that is why he is in hospital receiving treatment instead of being found dead - I imagine that they might at least let you know how he is.
 
I doubt they'll give specifics. I'm not sure if they'll say he's ok or not... because I'm not sure if that's still considered confidential. But it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I'm glad they found him, and I'll pray his condition improves.
 
Whether he makes it through or not, you've given him a chance when he wasn't mentally able to give himself any chance at all.

The fact that you made this difference already, is all you can do, and possibly the happiest news I've seen on JUB since I joined.

I hope he pulls through. And I congratulate you for asking the question, and being curious enough to follow up.
 
Thank you all for your help. I found a number to the hospital and I'll give them a call to find out how he's doing. I don't have any way to contact his family members but I hope the police were able to look through his phone or something.

It breaks my heart that anyone would commit suicide. We don't know the circumstances behind his decision, but best of luck to him. Hope you keep in touch with him.

Hell, if he wants to share his situation on this forum, there are plenty of guys on this site willing to help him through his problem/s.
 
Well done fella you in all probability saved his life , as another poster said
it is about the most wonderfull thing i have read on the forum .
This is why i think jub is so unique there is always some person who will
offer advice and support to a fellow jubber .

Years ago, a dear friend of mine had removed himself from his anti-depressant medication and was suicidal. I was on the phone with him for hours as he was telling me he might not go into work that day - and he might just end it all. I frantically tried to figure out what to do. I managed to convince him to go to work. Then i spoke to his wife who told me that i was mistaken and he was fine.

My brother-in-law is a psychiatrist and he advised me that you ALWAYS call 911 when someone threatens suicide.

You did the right thing.
 
I called the hospital today and the receptionist said she couldn't find his name so I don't know what that means. The police told me that was the hospital he was at so I guess I have to call back later and hope they have some info.

He was stressing over school and money among other things. I tried to convince him but it was still up to him. I figured what is meant to be will be. I really hope he pulls through and takes a new lease on life and can learn to be happy.
 
Okay he is in intensive care and that's all the info I can get over the phone, so I'm relieved to at least know he's still alive. The police told me he might have some brain damage but I hope he can have a full recovery.
 
You did a great thing - i already said that.

I'm sure you know this, but i also want you to think about - when he comes out of this, he may not thank you - maybe not now, maybe not ever. He may even resent you.

That is not good news.
You did helped him by calling the police.
