Just got out of a 2 1/2 movie. Not only I forgot to lock my car, I left the keys in the ignition. Then I got home and I left the lights on. I am one of the world's cheapest people. I never do that. ](*,)

Sorry to hear that, but it is pretty normal. I walk down the hall to get something and forget what I went for. I go back to the start and usually then remember.

My short term memory:
error: function not installed

My medium term memory:
error: the memory chips are failing, some data may be lost

My long term memory:
unknown: the memory chips appear to be atleast partly (possibly mostly) functional

I am just glad no one took my car.

Well, not to ignore your point, but WHY did you do it?

Were you running late to the show and you were in a hurry and just grabbed up your snacks and phone but forgot your keys as you ran in?

Did you stop the car, but then take a call or search your phone, so were distracted when you exited the car?

Were you bringing your brother or home aid with you and were chatting as you left the car and just not focused?

Was it raining?

Was there a Chinese lady standing in the parking spot, saving it for her friend who was circling the lot when you just pulled in on top of her and went in directly to not have to hear her gurgling?

Or do you remember why?

I had a new front door installed a year ago. It is uPVC so you have to actively lock it, you can'tjust slam it shut.
Because I wasn't used to the new routine I once went out, left the front door keys in the outside lock, went to town for two hours and the keys were still there when I returned.
I didn't realise until then how nice and safe my neighbourhood is

Are you taking ranitidine?

None of that. I just forgot. I had to check in to my app that gives me "free" movies, that is the only thing, but I was not running late or anything.

Sometimes it is from what is commonly known as 'the doorway effect. You're in the livingroom watching television and, when a commercial comes on, you decide you'd like an apple, so you stand up and walk to the kitchen. As you pass through the doorway, you forget why you're there. If you look around and see apples on the counter, it might jog your memory. If they're not readily visible, you might not remember at all. Occasionally, if you go back into the livingroom, you might think, "Oh yeah! An apple!"

Memory isn't always linear. It's often situational. Sitting in your livingroom watching television is one situation. Deciding to have an apple, even if time passes before the commercial comes on, is part of that situation. When you stand up and walk to the kitchen, it's still part of that situation, but the moment you pass through the doorway, your brain tells your memory to 'reset' because you are in a new situation and you forget why you are there. Going back into the livingroom resets the memory to the earlier situation.

It's called short term memory for a reason. It gets rid of useless stuff that you don't need anymore. It's quite common, but the brain can usually hold on to information long enough for it to be used... at least when you're younger. As you age, well...
