So, I approch the end of my collegiate career and am now faced with the daunting task of writing my thesis. The topic I have decided to address is homophobia in France (this is for my French major, so it has to pertain to France).

What sort of topics and general plan of attack do you guys think I should take?

I was thinking about talking about the history of homophobia, followed by a systematic and social improvement of accepting gays since the French revolution. However, I am, as of this point, completely ignorant as to specific events and landmark points in time when things have changed.

I know France still struggles as a general rule with hate crimes, so I feel that I should be able to find some good things, but I always like to run things by you guys.

.
Maybe write same sex marriage and homophobia.
Reasons why they oppose same sex marriage? Because the fear of ... ?

France has a long tradition of Catholicism, second only to Italy in Europe. That might be a good starting point if you can deduce my thoughts from that. Hell I remember in Catholic School [yeah Theology is useful!] learning about the schism in the Church with the Avignon Papacy in the 1300s. The Papal Palace still exists as a landmark.

The purpose of the thesis is to teach the research process. Coming here to complain that you are completely ignorant of the history of which you purpose to write is not a good beginning, nor a good way to begin your research. I suggest you choose a topic of which you have some previous knowledge. Further, choosing a topic like homophobia forever labels you as a gay. Later in life you may wish you had not been so forthcoming in that respect.

^Sadly, Benvolio does have a point. If you don't have a basic understanding of your thesis topic, you should choose something else. I bullshitted my way through my thesis on the pegging of the Renminbi to the US currency and it's impact on the Chinese Economy.

It depends on who will be marking the paper. I know three guys who did really self-indulgent, gay, autobiographical theses at university and they did OK.

Ask Lilbit for advice on modern, hip, PC academia.

Since there are mostly likely hundreds if not thousands of papers on your topic, you may want to narrow it down or do a comparative analysis between France and country like Belgium since they share history and see if these cultures have different attitudes on homosexuality and why that may be...

I agree.

Why you want to write a Thesis on French homophobia?
I don't think France has a bigger problem with homophobia than other European countries or the US.
You should find another subject you know better.
As long as is written in French, it doesn't matter what the subject is.

It's a vast field. The proposed narrowing to the comparison between France and Belgium is excellent.

Also homophobia in France covers many centuries, you would want to narrow it too. There are, though, some interesting things concerning homophobia in France. Abrogation of sodomy crime dates from 1789-92 I think, and I believe it is the oldest decriminalization in the western world. Yet it was replaced with crime of indecency, ie a crime without naming it directly, particularly since the Vichy regime of 1940-1944.

And yet, even in this period, homosexuals lived relatively easy lives in Paris, mainly among 'intellectuals' and artists. There is plenty material about that in history/sociology papers in French.

Homophobia dichotomy in France tags along the eternal dichotomy of Paris/countryside, 'intellectuals'/working classes.

Good luck on your thesis. Make sure you have a really new point of view on the subject, as it is a fairly common one in sociology nowadays.

PS : for current acts of homophobia, try to hit the newspapers sites : www.lemonde.fr www.lefigaro.fr www.liberation.fr and particularly on gay issues , www.tetu.fr .

I didn't say I was completely ignorant on homophobia. I said I was completely ignorant of the specific historical context and exact legal cases......
