The last few weeks I've notice a lot of mysterious bruises on my body - mostly on my arms, hands, and stomach. I have no idea where they've come from, I don't remember doing anything that would cause any of them. Is this something I should be worried about? I've been on a lot of different medications recently, but from what I've read bruising isn't a side effect of any of them...

If this susceptibility to bruising is a new thing for you, please see your doctor at your earliest opportunity. It *could* be a symptom of something serious - and early diagnosis & treatment would be important.

Yep, you definitely need to get your doctor in on this. I work in a hospital lab and see situations like this often. Sudden, mysterious bruising is almost always a sign of an underlying condition. It could be something simple, which I hope for you is the case, however, 2 disease states come to mind.... The first is Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura or ITP which is when a person's platelet count suddenly goes way down and these bruises start appearing. The cause is unknown, but it is usually treated first with steroids and in more severe cases that don't respond to steroids, the spleen is removed which usually works. The second (and I shudder to say it) but it's cancer. As you can see, both are pretty serious. Again, I hope it's nothing, but you need to talk to your doctor ASAP. Best Wishes!! :)

Maybe you got drunk and thrown out of a club and you dont remember it? i got a couple of mysterious bruises a month ago..my friend reminded me that we all were thrown out of a club :(

Definitely make an appointment to see your internal medicine doc. You might also want to increase your vitamin C intake.

Out of curiousity:

1. What meds are you on and for what condition(s)?

2. Are you diabetic or is anyone in your family?

If the bruises were just on your extremities they might just be accidental but the fact they're on your stomach suggests something else may be going on.

I've been on a lot of different medications recently,

What medications and why were you on medications?

Too little information to go on.

But as stated, easy or unexplained bruising is a reason to get to your physician asap. It could be because of your medication but since you fail to mention what meds, that's only speculation. Either way, you should see a physician in person at his/her next available.

1. What meds are you on and for what condition(s)?

Currently, I'm on Cymbalta for depression, trazodone for sleep, propranolol to prevent frequent headaches (lowers blood pressure), midrin/excedrin to get rid of headaches that aren't prevented, and clonazopam for anxiety.

2. Are you diabetic or is anyone in your family?
My dad is midly diabetic, but I'm not.

I was thinking about the possibility of sleepwalking due to my sleeping pills, but I have no evidence of that, and normally I'm totally unconscious for about 9 hours. I've been on the sleeping pills for a while, and only had this bruising the last couple weeks.

Do you guys really think this is an urgent issue? I obviously go to the doctor a lot, but not sure I wanna spend $200 over a few bruises. Can it wait 'till the next time I see my doc for something else? (probably within a month)

You should not wait a month.

You need to call your doctor immediately and let him/her know about the bruises. You'll probably need some blood tests done to ensure that there is nothing wrong with the ability of your blood to clot.

Of the drugs you have listed, excedrin does affect clotting because it contains aspirin. What we're concerned about is that there's not an apparent cause for the bruising. Unexplained bruising is something that does warrant a visit to your doctor.

Oh good old midrin! Cardinal Health is full of lies and delusions, claiming its on long term back order. At any rate you should definately go see you doctor dude. The Midrin can play with the way your body clots.

Sometimes bruises can be the result of very mild pressure, like bruises on your palms from lifting weights. Or yoga, anything that normally wouldn't cause you to bruise, may cause bruising now. Its something to think about, do you lean on the counter/bar with your tummy against the edge? Stuff like that could be the cause, so its a good idea to think of anything that could have caused the bruises and discuss it with your doctor.

Secondmonkey: As others have said, try not to wait a month, if possible. If nothing else, report your symptoms to your doc over the phone.

Actually, both Cymbalta and Midrin can cause easy bruising, although they may not be the reasons in your case. Your doc may want to gradually reduce the Cymbalta and replace it with another antidepressant. Don't suddenly stop taking it yourself; you need to taper off gradually at the same time you're introducing the new drug. If the bruising stops after withdrawing the Cymbalta, that's good evidence that it was the culprit.

I totally agree. There are some things that people are worried about on this board that are able to wait. This isn't one of those. It could be the medicines as discussed but whether it is or isn't, it still needs medical attention before a month from now.

My roommate had random bruising and it wound up being lyme disease. I have no medical background so I'm certainly not attempting to diagnose you with that, but it took her awhile to be diagnosed with it as doctors seemed to think it was one of any number of things. It wasn't until she specifically mentioned the possibility of lyme disease to a doctor (the fourth one or so that she had seen) after being told by a co-worker that her symptoms (which included much more than the bruising) resembled lyme diseaes, that a doctor performed a test and discovered that was the culprit all along. So it might be worth a mention to the doctor.

I saw a 34 year old lady last week who came to A&E with bruises, did her FBC (Full Blood Count) which showed a pancytopenia due to acute bone marrow failure secondary to acute myeloid leukaemia.

These bruises are probably nothing sinister, but this highlights why you need prompt investigation by a doctor.

Yes please see a doctor. Best to get it checked out and know.

I've heard that if we are low on Vitamin C intake we can bruise much easier. ..|

My sister's random bruising was a symptom of leukemia. It was "urgent" enough to warrant the start of inpatient chemo the same day.

this is the perfect example of why you need to see your doc right away. Something like this can take a long time to diagnose. And the longer you wait to see your doc, the longer it takes to begin diagnostics, the longer it takes to actually diagnose it, the longer it takes to start treating it, the longer it takes for it to go away.

And all the meantime, the symptoms could be getting worse.

so yeh, see your doc asap!

best of luck:)
