They say the NJ Supreme Court is liberal so by all means we've got this one in the bag. Break out the wedding rings and head to the Garden State.

Let’s just say I wouldn’t be planning a wedding in New Jersey anytime soon. At least not until after the ruling. The New York courts are, by some, considered liberal, and look how that turned out. The same can be said for Washington State. Also the appeals court in California just dished us bad news recently. I hope it will be good news for us, but I just don’t think it will.

Also, I hope they issue their ruling after the elections. Granting gays the right to marry in New Jersey now, before the elections, can cause those crazy conservatives to come out to the polls in droves.

I voted no, but the question isn't phrased correctly. The court isn't ruling against gay marriage. It's ruling whether the decision to allow it is in the realm of the courts or the legislature.

I think they'll vote it's in the realm of the legislature. I think it belongs there, too. Courts don't make laws, they only enforce them.

As much as I wanted the court's decision to be different, I think it was probably expected. I attend law school in Newark and the opinion was released in the middle of a class I have with a professor who is a state representative. Needless to say, he was fielding phone calls left and right (well, mainly right, since he's a Republican). I don't know if anyone has read the opinion, but I must agree with the dissent. Yes, the majority felt there same-sex couples should have equal financial and social benefits, but it's still not equal until the same title is available to both categories.

Corzine hasn't outright supported gay marriage, although he said he wouldn't push for a ban if the court ruled marriage had to be expanded. With that said, I have a feeling the legislature is going to create civil unions instead of altering the marriage definition. Personally, I think would be a cop-out, but hey, would you expect any less from a politician?
