Male nudes in sculpture, painting and photography only became an issue during the 20th century. Previously you wouldn't have needed to ask the question.

'Ancient' art rarely, if ever, exposed knob. Flashing knob is equivalent to females showing pink. That's not art.

And I still think it would have been suspect had there been only males in your collection/display.

I have a number of drawings and a few photographs, a pastel and a linocut from 15-20 years ago when I was posing nude for art classes and artist friends. Some of them are really good, and I'd like to frame and hang a few of the drawings--works of some substance, forgetting that I'm the subject--but I haven't done so because it would seem egotistical and narcissistic. I am, but I'd be embarrassed to advertise it.

Interesting points. I've seen more than a few Greek vases that depict erect penises. Herms as well. Satyrs of course. This weekend at the Getty Villa I saw one (vase that is) with a handsome, nicely-muscled youth masturbating while another male looked on. Apropos your comment regarding display: few if any of these would have been on "public" display after they were discovered in modern times. The room of forbidden works exists still at the Archaeological Museum in Naples, although now open to all--although, if I recall correctly, there's a warning sign of sorts outside.

As does, I should add, the Getty Villa in its current show of works from the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, on loan from Naples, including a larger than life-size satyr fucking a goat, in the center of one of the galleries.

I remember being taught when I was in my (Catholic boys) high school that Art wasn't erotic, and that, for example, in contrast to Playboy centerfolds, Renaissance female nudes were not sexually stimulating. But the more I looked at, say, Titian and Giorgione, the more I realized that a Titian Venus was the 16th century equivalent.

The expository materials for "Defining Beauty: the body in ancient Greek art", the British Museum's great 2015 show, got it all wrong when they stated that there was nothing erotic in the ideal depiction of the naked body in ancient Greece. Whatever committee decided this was showing willful ignorance of the culture.

I'm easily recognizable in most of them. I can identify my musculature in all of them, although I doubt anyone else could other than my partner. (At least I hope he could. I'd recognize his pecs and abs anywhere.) Even when I'm unrecognizable, I've got the same hesitation as the OP's husband.
