senseless!

I can think of a TON of woman with beautiful, and very powerful voices: Mariah Carey (90-95), Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Price, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston (early material, now she just likes to go, "woo, woo, woo, with the never-ending melismas", Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Clay Aiken (only male I can think of) and Carrie Underwood.

But the only one (and I'm sure there are more people who have a great set of pipes, but don't overdo it) yes, the only one that seems to have it under control is Carrie Underwood; I don't think she overdoes it when she easily could.

I can't wait to see what she does for her second outing - I'm no fan of country but she had at least 4 songs that I really got into on her debut, Some Hearts: Some Hearts (my absolute fav), Before He Cheats, Inside Your Heaven and I Ain't In Chekotah (real lyrics, the only song she co-wrote and beautiful vocals that soared). I hear she's going to write more too, which is great!! =D

I hear Kelly's gonna go all country on us to, which I would hate and be sad about, but I dunno.

Feel free to add to the list of people who have bangin' voices, mega bonus points if it's a male!! :D (*8*) :gogirl: ..| :=D:    m

/mini rant

Anastacia (F**king awesome voice!) & Michael Buble for my male one and god his HOT too!

^ I like Pink (when she had pink hair) but she does scream/shout sometimes.

Whitney Houston (early material, now she just likes to go, "woo, woo, woo, with the never-ending melismas)

LOL, leave Whitney alone she is slowly but surely getting it together.

Leona Lewis :)

Sarah Brightman...she never has to scream because she can control her voice

Prince.

He CAN scream himself senseless (listen to "Endorphinemachine"), but that's exceptionally rare.

Lex

Yes, it's too bad there aren't more people that know about her. She has some catchy songs that embody so many different elements and genres.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Josh Groban... He probably has the best male voice out there

I prefer male vocalists (I hate the female screamers), but I also like Nina Hagen very much. Loud does not equal good, but I think Janis Joplin was an exception to that rule as was Aretha Franklin - she does sound like she's screaming, but for her I find it acceptable. I can't stand Celine Dion - she generally makes my skin crawl.

The only male vocalists I can think of with powerful voices are opera singers, and I hate that also. As I said above, you don't have to be loud to be good, and in most cases having a loud or powerful voice is a detraction, at least for me. I like it toned down a lot more - I don't like having my ears assaulted. There's a lot to be said for subtlety. I guess Jimmy Paige (Led Zeppelin) was a good vocalist that is loud, and Roger Daltry (The Who) was good in his day. I sort of liked Rod Stewart and Joe Cocker. For something more contemporary, I like Ween. Sorry that I don't have more contemporary examples, but there is little contemporary music that I like, although I do like a bit of hip hop.

I forgot about Nick Name and the Normals - he's powerful and good.

Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth <- Girls from Wicked, need I say more?
Lauren Pritchard <- Her voice is sooo awesome and melodic!
Raul Esparza <- <3
John Hill, Michael Arden <- together they are soo awesome. Search them on youtube for the song 'bare'

I'm surprised Barbra Streisand hasn't been mentioned yet. Or Donna Summer. Pat Benatar springs to mind as well as Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders). For those of you who know her, Olga Tañon has an amazingly powerful voice.
