Name any artist that has powerhouse vocals, but doesn't scream themselves...

I'm surprised Barbra Streisand hasn't been mentioned yet. Or Donna Summer. Pat Benatar springs to mind as well as Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders). For those of you who know her, Olga Tañon has an amazingly powerful voice.

Chrissie Hynde is simply great
man i saw her a few times

never disappointed

everytime i hear back on the chain gang
my heart is pounding
so real so good the lyrics

Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Mandy Barnett,Harriet Wheeler(from Portishead) and Martina McBride(whom i've seen at Lilith Fair years ago and she killed it!!) ..|

*laughing*](*,)](*,) Man!!Yes, thats what i meant. Thanks Jy!!!oops!! i guess thats what happens when i stay up waaayyy past my bedtime.!oops!

I think it's hard to find people in pop music (be it pop/rock, pop/country or pop/r&b) who don't do some screaming. However, they run rampant in other genres. I listen to a lot of musical theatr and right off the top of my head I think of Judy Kuhn, Marrin Mazzie, Kristen Chenowith and Lea Salonga.

I have to disagree with some of the suggestions. Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Chaka Kahn and Idina Menzel are all pretty much known for screaming (I happen to be a HUGE fan of the female scream-sing, so some of these are my favorite singers). I don't think it has to do so much with control as it is a choice. Ann Wilson doesn't scream because she has to, she does because her idol is Robert Plant and that is the style she is going for. When she was hired to sing Almost Paradise for the Footloose soundtrack, the screaming didn't fit the song, so she didn't scream it. Joan Jett is another great example of someone who alters her voice to the style of the music, but insead of a high belt scream, she puts the rough edge in her low notes.

I like Amy Lee, but sometimes she sounds like she wants to scream, but just can't quite get there.

Barbra Striesand used to be a screamer (come on---listen to the end of "Don't Rain on my Parade), but like Bette Midler (who used to be a MAJOR screamer) has calmed down. Little Barbra (Linda Eder) isn't really a screamer, but like Amy Lee she sometimes seems to fall just short of the emotion she's trying to get.

I think Sarah Brightman is a good example of a non-screamer. Even on her more poppy stuff--like the album Fly--she stays away from the full-out scream, even if she does get a little shriekey. But, part of this might come from her training. Even though she started as a pop/disco singer, she's always been fond of classical music. Her hybrid of pop and classical doesn't really lend itself to screaming.

For some reason I really just can not stand Carrie Underwood's voice. I don't know what it is. I recognize she has talent, but I just don't enjoy listening to her sing :(

some powerful male voices are Frank Sinatra, Dean Maritn, and Sammy Davis Jr, but sadly they are no longer with us.

Chaka screams her head off. She doesn't belong in this topic!

: )

I don't know how the HELL I forgot about Elliot Yamin!!

You guys NEED to d/l "Find A Way". Although he didn't pen this song personally, it showcases beautiful vocals, a couple of runs that he's famous for and just great lyrics with a nice beat/vibe to it!!

I promise you won't regret it. This boy is underrated vocally!!

Freddie Mercury? I think so...

Tragedy, really.

I'm confused about this thread. It's supposed to be about female vocalists that can actually sing (sorry Madonna, Britney Spears, Shania Twain, etc.). Yet these are women that don't scream, too? Yet most of the responses are for women that DO scream.

I'm gonna have to vote for Martina McBride. She might have let out a howl on "Cry On The Shoulder Of The Road" and "Broken Wing," but this is one diva that uses restraint.

I listen to a lot of pop music and other than the obvious incredible pop female recording artists such as Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, here are names of some other successful pop female recording artists who’s singing voices are just as incredible:

Monica Naranjo:

Someone several years back said she’s the most successful Spanish pop female recording artist, I’m not sure about now because I don’t live in Spain. Among all the other pop female recording artists in the world, I think she’s the best dancer. Here’s a performance of her hit single “Sobrevivire” from the program "Pavarotti & Friends" several years back and her performance not only showcased her powerhouse vocals, but also her spectacular dancing ability.

Tina Arena:

That photo's actually a screenshot from one of her music videos. Anyway, Tina Arena is still one of the top 3 most successful Australian pop female recording artists and her vocals is just like, "WOW!!!". I remember the very first time I heard her worldwide hit “Chains”, the way her voice soared towards the end of the song sent chills up my spine. This is the music video of “Chains”:

Lara Fabian:

Celine Dion’s the most successful French Canadian pop female recording artist and I assume Lara Fabian’s #2, I'm not sure though because I don't live in Quebec. Anyway, Lara Fabian has a voice that’s as incredible as Celine Dion’s. “I Will Love Again” was a big worldwide hit single for her and it showcased her powerhouse vocals.

Lol... When I first saw this, my mind saw "Yvonne Elliman" who is also not a screamer :)

ROTFLMAO! Not to mention Patti LaBelle. That woman does nothing but scream/ I love her, think she's fab, but still. Patti will smack you in the face with her larynx if she could.

Mariah Carey doesn't scream. She doesn't have to. Her high pitched vocals aren't screaming, she is using what is called a whistle register. Its the highest sounds a human can make.
Mariah Carey screams. My mother, a professional singer, said that "Fantasy" was nothing but a screaming exercise for Mimi. Doesn't change the fact that I love it and Mimi, but girlfriend screams. She's toned it down as she's gotten older, but a lot of her early stuff was scream-tastic.

Mariah does scream a little. DANNO is right about her whistle tones not being screams, but her high belt sometimes walk up and tip-toes over the line into a scream. I don't know that I would use "Fantasy" as the prime example tho... What type of music does your mother sing? Sometimes (a lot of times) classical singers equate belting with screaming. I heard one person refer to it as "yelling on pitch".

I think people who have powerful voices are
(Amy Lee from Evanescence)
(Carrie Underwood)
(Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland)
(Mariah Carey)
(Sarah McLachlan has a beautiful voice)
theres so many people who are very gifted vocally

Mariah does scream (It's Like That, Butterfly, Shake it Off). Mariah does have a range, but a lot of her higher range notes just sound like a high pitched shriek as she doesn't actually sings phrases (they're just high, one-syllable notes). I'm not saying those shrieks don't sound pleasant..

My mother sings Jazz/Blues.

But when Mariah sings the second verse of Fantasy "Images of rapture / Creep into me slowly / As you go into my head" is clearly belted out to the back row! LMAO! I know that isn't the prime example, but it is what I've been listening to on my way to work for the last several days so it's stuck in my head.

But they're shrieks nonetheless! LOL!

Surprised no one mentioned Jilly from Philly:
