This bugs the shit out of me! It's nothing new ,I have had to wear a name tag for the past 23 years in my work. I work in a hospital and they require you to wear a name tag with full first and last name with your job title displayed. I understand why and really don't mind wearing the tag......it's the people who will call you by your first name only seconds after meeting you and seeing your name. I really don't know why that bugs me so much.....but it fucking does!

When I introduce myself to my pts. I always say...I am Mr. ____ your nurse and I will be taking care of you today or night . And I always cal my pts. Mr. Mrs. or Miss .

Is it me ? or does it bother anyone else? I only want people I am really close with or actually know to some extent to call me on a first name bases.
 
Are you in the US? That's just the way it is here. People are informal. Just trying to be nice.
 
I know what you mean. I guess people are trying to be nice and friendly, but in a professional environment it's not always appropriate to use first names. Even in social environments, I don't like it - unless the people are more or less the same age.

I'm a teacher and it's become a trend here in the UK over the last few years, that pupils/students will call their teachers by their first name - and in some cases, are even encouraged to do so. I think this is very inappropriate.

In general, I think titles should be used until you're invited to use first names. This is how it works in a lot of other countries - especially those countries where languages other than English are spoken.
 
As a patient I prefer calling a nurse by his/her first name. If I were addressed as Mr I'd ask to be called by my first name.
 
Do you look like a man? Maybe they aren't sure if you are male or female so they don't know if to say Mr or Ms. If you introduce yourself as Mr whatever then they will probably call you that.

I don't see the point in getting worked up over it. People make a big deal out of stupid stuff like that for no reason. I think some people think it is a sign of respect but there are a lot of people who go by Mr-/Ms- and I still don't respect them.

I would rather be known by my first name than anything else.
 
I was taught that a person should never introduce themselves as Mr.______. You should introduce yourself by using your first and last names.
 
I never use my last name unless I'm forced to. I don't like the sound of it, I don't like saying it.

But in general, I don't think a nurse is, in most people's minds, a "title" position. The doctor, certainly, maybe a hospital administrator, perhaps an elderly clerk, but not the nurses or the EMTs or the orderlies.

But then, I usually expect a person to address a nurse as "nurse," not by any name, first or last.

The whole concept of formal address is very confused right now, because we most of us feel that a person is supposed to be addressed as he or she wishes to be addressed. But then we end up addressing people as we wish to be addressed, because it's too hard to figure out and remember how other people wish to be addressed.

But if a person introduces himself as "Mr. Soandso," that's what you should call him, no matter what his name tag says.

I prefer the first name on a tag. First names are easier to pronounce (often)

do not allow the familiarity of someone having your full name. Silly as it may

seem...possible I.D. theft avoidance.

Got 9 joes' in the staffing...simple, Joe 1...Joe 2 et cetera. My Drs. and their

staff are first name basis. I don't care for Dr. Smith holding my nuts and then

saying....Now cough Mr. Jones....anyone that intimate with me better know I

am Lefty. The man has had his finger up my ass and down my throat and

everywhere else....his staff have seen my stats, my bp, even occasionally my

ass or pecker....not to formal, kinda close and well almost intimate.

Mr. Jones is for the IRS, the FBI, my latest girlfriend or boyfriend to ask for

when my current wife answers the phone.

It's amazing people even read your name tag. Most people hardly acknowledge or read them.


When I worked at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, it was always a nice feeling when people would say my name, instead of "Hey, lifeguard".


And when ever I go somewhere (a bank, grocery store, gas station, ect) I always say "Thanks/Thank you, ______".



Most places don't require you to display both your first and last name, so maybe they are just used to calling people by their first names?

Apu Nahasapeemapetilon on the Simpsons doesn't wear a name tag, so how's anybody supposed to remember his last name anyway? LOL

I used to have a friend (he died) who would absolutely and totally get bent all out of shape if somebody, perhaps a waitress, addressed him as SIR. He would almost scream at that person that he wasn't SIR, but his name wasa Michael. (Calling him Mike also drove him over the edge...) I think he had some serious issues - after all he didn't wear any kind of name tag giving people any way to address him in anything other than a generic way.
 
I have to wear a name tag at work. It only displays my first name.

It doesn't really bother me too much about having to wear it.
 
I worked retail for two years. Had my name tag on everyday. Yes, I would bug me when customers would call me by my first name, like it made it personal. The bad thing is, some of the customers would expect me to give them discounts after they would sit there and talk to me while using my first name.

But yes, customers calling me by my first name would bug me.
 
I wear a name tag at work with my first name on it. It does indeed bother me when people read it and call me by name.... but that's because I live in a small town where most everybody knows most everybody else. So when someone uses my name and I don't know them I get wierded out, and wonder if I'm supposed to known their name too... if they ACTUALLY know me, or know of me, or know who I am through a friend in town, or are simply reading my nam tag. Its wierd and I hate the creepiness.
 
Well if your NAME tag has your FIRST NAME on it, is anyone surprised that people are calling you by the NAME they see on you NAME TAG?
 
I have to wear name tags everywhere when no one but my lecturers uses them as identification. It's like wearing dog bracelets --'

But agreeing with all above; isn't it better to introduce yourself with your full name?
 
We are required to wear nametags. At one time with our full name on them. None of us do that anymore. And one girl wears a nametag that doesn't even have her name on it. When you have to deal with too many drunk and undesirable people, there is no reason to let them know your full name.
Example...one time a guy stabbed a guest and robbed him. the police caught him at the gas station next door buying cigs with the money he just stole. My co-worker was taken by the police over to the gas station to ID him. She was wearing her nametag. the guy was handcuffed and in the back of the police car, they had her ID him and he saw her nametag with her full name on it. Kinda creepy.
 
OK....Maybe I should have been a little more detailed in my original post.
What I guess really bugs me about the tag is that it gives the right to total strangers calling you by name and you having no idea who they are or no introduction.

As far as me introducing my self to my pt'S As Mr. .....that is hospital policy and policy that we address them as Mr. Mrs or miss.....it is policy that we never get too familiar with the pts and always keep a professional distance and relationship.
