Nate's wounded heart

Ok, I know some of you are gonna think I'm just a tease, but I had to pospone the coming chapter. I have a good chunk of it written already, the thing is that I got recommended by my school as a candidate for a full ride scholarship to go in exchange to the US, so I have been trying to get the paperwork done this past couple of weeks and I have to turn it in this coming tuesday. I will keep working on the chapter as soon as I get done with the paperwork and please wish me luck, this opportunity is amazing and I can't imagine letting it slip away.

Ok, so I got a message notifying me the date of my interview for the exchange, apparently I made it through the first round and am a candidate to actually go. Now all I need to do is make it through the interview and keep my grades up, but I haven't been doing so hot in school, so I'm gonna have to work my ass off for it. Thanks for all the nice comments, know that the story is still in the making, though obviously in between a lot of other stuff, and I will post it when I feel like I've done a good enough job with the chapter.

Hey Mattie, thanks for helping Mantikohr there, I haven't checked this thread in a while and it makes me feel awful. I have been facing a little bit of a blockage and I hate it, I can't stand to sit there and feel like I'm writing crap... Bu anyways, what I'm trying to say is that I am hitting the keyboard, the boys and girl are still alive and they want to kick my ass for keeping them locked in for so long, but they will be here sometime soon.
 
I am here, and now that I see your signature... I was in Tucson like 3-4 weeks ago! How did I not remember??? Ok, so long story short, I earned a scholarship to go to the US and take courses on US history and culture and they took us around, I was in southwestern NY, Arizona and then DC, and it was amazing. I am working on the new chapter, but as it is turning out way longer than what I had intended I am turning it into 2 chapters instead. I am sorry that it has taken so long, but you guys are great for waiting so long and I hope you like the rest of the story when I post it.
 
OK, I finally have it! I put some spanish stuff in here, so if you want to check what it means, www.wordreference.com might help with some translations. Ok, I hope you guys like it, I worked real hard on it and chapter 30 will be around soon (hopefully), so here it is:

Chapter 29 ––Old Bastards Die Hard––

The noon sun was beating down hard, for an early spring day. Sweat poured down his pits, around his gut, and soaked the front of his shirt. Bob and Ross were nowhere to be seen, and they had been supposed to pick up the corn boxes and put them in the back of the old pickup truck. Obviously, they had run to lunch as soon as their bellies started growling. Now he had a pile of corn boxes to drag from the edge of the crops to the pickup in his driveway. Margaret was probably fixing lunch, or at least he hoped she’d be as useful as to be doing that. And now that the queer boy was out of his life, all the real work was left for him to do.

Forget about Ross and Bob, they were worth shit, that’s why he had failed at his attempt of producing milk. The cattle he’d bought were “too much work,” as they had said, and he’d ended up selling it all before it ruined him. Truth be told, it had not hurt the profits of his farm as he had thought. Sure, it would have been great if he could have doubled as a farm/ranch, but his farm had always given him a good income, a steady income of money that he had never even told his wife about, or his useless children for that matter. If they had ever known, they would’ve tried to spend it on worthless shit.

They had no clue about how much he had made, not even those stupid brothers. Ross and Bob were piling them corn boxes and reaping the crops at a pace that wasn’t as fast as he wanted, but fast enough to keep him earning an amount of money that neither one of them idiots ever considered. They were working non-stop and handling a production, that if they had thought for a few seconds, they would have figured out had to produce a huge amount of money. Aside from the fact that he had invested a large chunk of his earnings, and now he had a nice, big amount of money that no one, but himself, knew about. He had thought about going to change his will, a stupid idea that Margaret had convinced him of when the kids were too young for him to know how worthless they actually were. But he was going to get that fixed soon, as soon as he’d finish this month’s production, right before leaving for good.

He had been planning his escape for a long time, and the best part was, no one had figured anything out, not Margaret, not Ross, or Bob. He would probably go back to New Orleans, where he’d grown up, and go back to the old brothels. Margaret could file for a divorce, but if he filed for one while still in Texas, then the state would support him, good ole’ Texan laws were in favor of the man in such cases. Ah! The good life was just waiting for him! The boxes were heavier than he’d thought, no wonder those retards had gone off to lunch as soon as they could, they were avoiding the real work. The thought of lunch made his stomach growl, as he was hungry already. “Yo woman! I want some lunch, if that isn’t too much of a problem for ya!” he yelled as he picked up a box from the edge of the crops.

“I’m working on it, have some patience Nathaniel!” Margaret yelled from inside the house.

“Patience!” he mocked. He’d had enough patience all their marriage, and it had run out already, after a slutty daughter that spread her legs just to the first moron she found, and a queer son that was never good for anything. The woman had spent all the patience any husband could have for a wife. But soon, he wouldn’t have to have any more patience; the thought of leaving put a smile on his face. Then, as he carried the box, a few feet from the pickup, he thought he saw the corn moving. He was about to stop when the snake’s head poked out from in between two ears of corn. Its slanted eyes stared into his as it sniffed the air with its bifid tongue and rattled its tail.

He froze and just when he was about to hurl the box forward, the snake bared its fangs and lurched forward. He felt the first bite like a fire that burnt his cheek, then as he dropped the box, the snake leapt forward once again and bit his right wrist, and finally, when the box fell on the ground it leapt up and bit him on the right knee. He felt dizzy and fell forward, landing on top of the bunch of ears of corn that had spilled from the box. He started shaking and trying to form words, but it all came out as grunts and incoherent sounds. “Fuck me sideways with a lunchbox, a fucking snake had to come and screw me like this…” he thought before it all turned to darkness.

She had finished getting lunch ready, and pondered the idea of eating before calling the Neanderthal that had been yelling at her a while before. She stared out the kitchen window and kept looking into the cornfields, remembering the days when Susie and Natey would run around the backyard, playing hide and seek. “Don’t go in the cornfields Susie! I can’t find you in there,” little Nate had yelled after Susie had taken a few steps towards the fields.

“That’s the point of the game you silly, to hide where you can’t find me!” Susie had yelled back laughing. They both started giggling and yelling as Nate tried to catch his big sister as she ran around the backyard, while she watched in amusement from inside the kitchen. Now, a gust of wind lashed and shook the corn stalks, bringing her back from her memories. She realized she had started crying, so she wiped the tears away with the back of her hands.

After a few seconds, she took a deep breath, before starting to smooth her blouse and jeans with her hands. Better look good before going out to look for the beast, his animal-like lust for her was probably the only reason why the man stayed. For she knew that she had aged gracefully, everyone thought so. The girl that tended the local supermarket had once told her that in her opinion, she could get a good middle aged man and leave Nathaniel so she could have a good life. But she didn’t feel like she had the strength of doing such a thing. Not after having lost her babies because of her lack of courage, now she would stay at Nathaniel’s side. She thought of it as her cross to bear for the pain that she had allowed him to cause their children. It had been at least forty-five minutes since he’d been yelling about lunch, if not an hour, so she better go look for him.

In resignation, she walked out and started calling out to him. Although, he wasn’t anywhere within sight, and he didn’t answer her call. Just great, the last thing she needed was for him to have left to get lunch somewhere else. The brute was so impatient that she wouldn’t be surprised if he had actually done that. She started muttering curses in Spanish as she walked around, looking for him. “Me cago en la grandísima… este cavernícola impaciente del carajo…” she kept saying, not caring about him possibly hearing if he was still around. He hated it whenever she’d speak Spanish, that was the reason why he had forbid her from using it under “his” roof, and after her mother died ten years earlier, she had only used it whenever he wasn’t around. But now, she didn’t give a shit, she had been running out of patience for him since he’d kicked out little Nate out of the house.

She had walked up to the edge of the crops, where a bunch of boxes filled with ears of corn was lying. “No Nathaniel in sight,” she said before walking back to the house. Then, she walked up the driveway and froze. Nathaniel was lying on the ground, face down and motionless. “Nathaniel?” she called out to him and unexpected fear seized her as he didn’t respond or move.

“How is this Billy guy doing?” Julian asked him.

“Well, it’s hard to tell, he’s not exactly the most expressive person out there,” Martin answered.

“I’m going to keep an eye on him while he’s here, I’m not all that sure that bringing him here is the best idea, but I’m willing to see why it is that you and Nate want to bond with him,” Julian told him.

“Give him a break, he’s gone through a lot, and I can’t imagine how he must feel after what he saw his father do…” Martin said staring at the wall.

“I know, but given his history, I’d say he’s unstable, and that doesn’t make me want to trust him,” Julian said, holding his ground.

“Baby,” Martin said, getting him to look at him, “don’t block him out without getting to know him, you guys always try to see the good in everyone, that’s how you and I ended getting together, remember?” Martin asked him.

“I know, and I don’t want to seem bitter, but it’s just that I don’t want anything to happen to you guys and I fear that you might be trusting him too much. I know that when he finds his brother, the bond between them might lead him into forgetting about the stuff that you guys have done for him,” Julian said as Martin sat next to him on Julian’s bed. Julian had picked him up the previous night, and now that it was Friday, Nate and Luke were coming down, with Billy along. Obviously, Julian and Dylan had reluctantly agreed to having him over to their place. The idea was, to get him away from St. Louis, at least for a weekend.

“I didn’t like him at all at the beginning, in fact, I was terrified of him,” Martin added, as Julian looked at the carpet, “but now I’ve realized that he’s just on a constant defensive mode. It’s like he puts a wall around him to keep people away, but when I saw him last week, I realized that he’s really scared.”

“So you think we could get him to put the wall down and let us in?” Julian asked him.

“Maybe, if you ask me, I think Nate and Luke have already gotten a few bricks off the wall,” Martin answered.

“I hope you’re right,” Julian answered before sighing.

“Where’s Dylan?” Martin asked.

“I think he went to spend time with some of his football buddies, although, I’m wondering which,” Julian answered.

“Why?” Martin asked in response.

“Because, his friends are taking turns, they spend some time with him, and then some time with Tommy. They’ve been doing that ever since they broke it off last week,” Julian answered as he rubbed his temples.

“I really hoped it wouldn’t come to that, but they are both too stubborn,” Martin said, as he took Julian’s right hand into his own.

“Yeah, it was bound to happen. I just hope that they start to really speak to each other before parting ways this summer, they try to act like they are ok, but you know it’s not for real, although, it’s better than nothing I guess,” Julian said as he gently squeezed Martin’s hand.

“Do you know what time they’re going to be here?” Martin asked him.

“They said in about three or four hours, why?” Julian asked him, already wishing his instincts were right on his guess to why Martin was asking.

“Well,” Martin said, wrapping his arms around Julian from behind, “I was hoping we could have some time to ourselves, that’s why.”

“Yeah, you mean like this?” he asked as he turned around before pressing himself against Martin and starting to run his hands up from Martin’s crotch to his chest and then back down to his crotch.

“Oh yeah,” Martin answered as he leaned forward into Julian’s embrace. Julian started quickly taking off his clothing while still planting kisses on Martin’s neck. Then Julian’s cell phone started ringing.

“Oh shit, let me turn that off,” he said as he reached for it on his nightstand.

“Hurry up,” Martin told him as he unbuckled his belt.

“Shit, it’s Susie… that’s weird, why would she be calling?” Julian wondered aloud, “I better get it, just give me a few minutes,” Julian said, as Martin sighed and sat on the bed. “Hey Susie, what’s up?” he asked when he answered. “Wait, what? When?” he asked. Martin sat up and looked at him, noticing how Julian’s brow furrowed, as he could hear Susie talking non-stop.

“What happened?” Martin asked him.

Julian moved the phone away from his face, covering it with his right hand, “Their Dad died earlier today,” he answered as he rubbed his left temple with his left hand.

“Oh shit,” Martin said as he lay back on the bed.

“The town looks nice,” Billy said as they drove around.

“It is, it’s a lot calmer than St. Louis, and you can still have fun around here,” Luke said, trying to keep Billy’s conversation going. He had been staying on and off with them since the previous week’s events. And even though they had tried to get him to attend his father’s funeral, he had refused, just like his mother had. So, in the end, there had been no actual ceremony. Still, he had been talking to them more, starting conversations from time to time, which showed them that he was trying to open up a little more.

“My cousins are attending Washington U next year, they’re very bright, just like you,” Nate said looking back at him.

Billy gave a sad smile as he looked out the window. “I don’t even know if I want to go to college next year,” he said.

“You’re thinking about taking a break,” Luke said, without taking his eyes off the road.

“Maybe, I don’t know yet,” Billy answered.

“You should consider getting some sort of counseling too,” Nate said, before exchanging a look with Luke. Billy nodded and looked down.

“Maybe, but I don’t like that idea,” Billy answered.

“I didn’t like it either, but it’s been helping me a lot to deal with stuff,” Nate said.

Billy nodded and looked out the window. Nate and Luke both exchanged another look. Whenever Billy would leave a conversation hanging, he would usually not talk for a good while. So they figured that the topic they had brought onto this conversation wasn’t something he wanted to talk about yet. “Ok, we’re here,” Luke said as they drove up the road to the twins’ house.

“The car’s not here, that means Dylan’s probably out,” Nate said as they got in the driveway.

“I’ll leave some room in case he comes, so he can park the car next to the jeep,” Luke said as he drove the car into the right side of the driveway, leaving enough space for a four-wheel drive to park to the jeep’s left, or so Billy thought. They started getting out, so he followed suit and got out, clutching his bag tight to his chest, feeling the lump that the souvenir he took from his father’s liquor cabinet made inside the bag. Nate rung the bell and they waited a little until Martin opened the door.

“Hey, how are you guys doing?” he asked as he stepped aside and Nate and Luke walked in.

“Good, just a little tired, how’re things here?” Nate asked.

“Good, just waiting on you guys,” Martin said, “Hey Billy,” he said as he extended his hand for Billy to shake.

“Hey,” Billy answered, as he shook Martin’s hand, a shy smile slightly noticeable for a few seconds on his face.

Luke could sense Martin was nervous about something from the moment he opened the door, and even more, from Nate’s question. “You sure everything’s all right?” Luke asked him.

“Yeah, just a little bored, that’s all,” Martin answered.

Luke nodded, not buying it and walked in. “What are we going to do with the sleeping arrangements?” Luke asked, changing the subject.

“Well, we were thinking, maybe you and I could share the guestroom, Nate and Billy could take Dylan’s room and the twins could sleep in Julian’s,” Martin answered.

“Wait, why don’t you two share a room?” Billy asked, to Nate and Luke.

“Well…” Nate began to say.

“The idea was to have everyone paired with someone they know, so we thought we’d do it that way,” Martin answered.

“Well, it sounds logical, but I don’t want to take away private time from them, I’ve done enough of that this past week already,” Billy answered as he gestured towards Nate and Luke.

“If that’s your suggestion then I should room with Martin and you should room with my brother,” Julian said while he was coming down the stairs. They all looked up at the sound of his voice.

“Would that be ok?” Martin asked him as Julian hugged Nate and planted a quick kiss on his cheek.

“Hey Jules,” Luke said as they hugged too.

“Billy, this is my cousin Julian,” Nate said, gesturing towards Julian.

“Nice to meet you Julian,” Billy said as he extended his hand.

“Nice to meet you too,” Julian answered as he shook Billy’s hand, then he looked back at Martin and answered his question, “I’ll call him and ask, but yes, I think it will be fine,” Julian answered, and Billy caught Julian and Martin exchanging a glance.

“I don’t want to be a problem,” Billy said, jumping in.

“Don’t worry, you don’t bite do ya?” Julian asked him with a small grin on his face.

“Only when I’m asked to,” Billy answered mischievously. Luke, Nate and Martin all looked back at him in surprise; he was certainly becoming more open. While in reality, Billy was surprised by Julian’s looks, and was hoping his twin was truly identical to him, and single.

“Okay, let’s take your stuff upstairs and get you settled,” Martin told him, weirded out by the way in which Billy had responded to Julian, then Billy followed him upstairs.

“Nate, how safe will Dylan be with him?” Julian asked now that Billy was out of the room.

“You don’t need to worry, he’s not dangerous, right now I think he’s in need of company and affection,” Nate answered.

“The anger and resentment seem to be gone, you do need to give him some space and time for him to open up on his own most of the time, but he is beginning to trust in us more and more,” Luke added.

“Ok, why don’t we get you guys settled in,” Julian said as he walked up the stairs with them in tow. Once in the guestroom, Julian stood next to Luke and whispered in his ear, “I need to talk to you, in private, please.”

Luke nodded and whispered back, “I’ll be down in a little.”

Julian walked out and decided to check on Martin and Billy, so he walked down the hall and snuck his head in the door of Dylan’s room. Billy was going through his things as Martin sat on Dylan’s bed. “Everything ok in here?” he asked them.

“Yeah, well… I hope your brother doesn’t mind me crashin’ in here,” Billy answered.

“I don’t think he’ll mind,” Julian replied, he wanted to add more, to tell Billy that it would be ok as long as he didn’t even think of hurting Dylan or anyone in the house, but the sideways look he got from Martin told him that it wasn’t that good of an idea.

“I… uhm, thank you for having me over,” Billy shyly said.

“No problem, Nate and Luke seem to like you a lot, and I trust their judgment,” Julian answered, “but please, try not to make us think otherwise.”

Billy’s expression seemed to sadden, and Martin decided to jump in. “You have to know that we want to help you, and that you can talk to us if you need to,” Martin said.

“Right,” Billy flatly answered.

It was obvious to him that they had screwed up. Luke had mentioned that Billy took his own time and pace to open up, and there they had gone and rushed to push him into trusting them. Then, just as he was thinking of whether saying something or just leaving before screwing up even more, he heard someone clearing his throat behind him. Looking back, he realized that it was Luke, he nodded towards the stairs, Julian got the hint and followed. As they were going down, he realized Martin was following them. Once they made it to the kitchen, he sat on a stool at the breakfast table, gesturing for Luke to sit across from him. “Ok, you’re freaking me out, what happened, why the fuck is it that you are acting like this?” Luke asked as he sat.

“I never liked him, or really cared for him, but I feel like shit about it…” Julian started saying and realized he was only further freaking Luke out, “Nate’s dad died today,” he said, trying to cut to the point so Luke would relax.

“Shit,” Luke said. He seemed to go into deep thought as both Martin and Julian stared at the floor, having the same awkward feeling. Neither one of them wanted to have to tell Nate about it. Since his therapy had begun to get serious the previous week, Nate had even mentioned that a point in his recovery would involve an actual conversation with his parents. Now, the conversation would involve only him and his mother. “How… how did he die?” Luke asked, finally getting his attention back on them.

“Uhm… that’s… a snake, they think it was a rattle snake that bit him, several times,” Julian said, not even wanting to imagine how it could have felt.

“Dear god… Where? Do they even know how the fuck that happened?” Luke asked him.

“Susie says that they hide in shaded places, especially now that the temperatures are picking up, they think he picked up a box with corn ears and that the snake was in it,” Julian answered.

Luke shook his head, he couldn’t believe this. Nate had been mentioning lately that his therapist had been helping him get over the hard feelings that his father still made him feel, but this… this would probably screw it all up. Julian was staring at the floor, looking as much at a loss as he was. Neither one of them knew how to tell Nate about this. “Maybe we should wait for a while before telling him.”

“Agreed,” Julian said, then puffed out air from his mouth and shook his head once again. “Martin doesn’t even want to be in the same room when Nate finds out, why do I date older guys when they won’t get involved in serious stuff…” he thought aloud.

“Shut up, I’m older than Nate too, and I don’t think I want to be in the same room as him when he hears about it either…” Luke said and he slouched on the stool that he’d been sitting on since Julian dragged him into the kitchen.

“Ok, either way, we gotta tell him, somehow,” Julian said before running his hands over his hair, “Susie said that she’s there with her mom, trying to help with the funeral preparations and all, that ain’t gonna be pretty, I can tell ya dat much…” Julian said, slurring the last words with a southern drawl that Luke had not heard him using, or Dylan, or Nate for that matter, that made him realize that this was, indeed, some pretty nasty stuff that had just been thrown at them.

“Ok, first things first, how is Dylan?” Luke asked, starting to weave things in his mind.

“Well, stuff with Tommy has been a lot better, they broke up, but somehow, it feels like they are better off this way, it’s made them get along better and he’s been way more relaxed. Why?” Julian said.

“Because, I think Dylan might help to get Billy off our hands for a while, during which time we can take Nate some place and tell him, you know get him relaxed before dropping the bomb.”

“We could take him out for dinner and Dylan could have some pizza or something’ with Billy while you, me, Nate and Martin are gone,” Julian added.

“But, we need to find a way to get Billy to not care about staying here with Dylan all by himself…” Luke said.

“I can fix that,” Julian said with an evil grin on his face.

Billy was lying on his stomach as he read on top of the missing twin’s bed. Ever since he had first seen Julian, he had envied Martin in a way that went beyond his understanding. Julian was quite simply beautiful, but then again, even as it was hard for him to admit, Martin was very handsome himself. There was still a slight bit of resentment from him towards Martin; even though, he already knew that there was no real reason for that resentment, as he had already gotten to know that it hadn’t been Martin’s fault that Michael ended in jail, it had been his father’s fault. He was reading A Density of Souls for the third time, and for as much as he loved the book, he could predict what was coming in the next few pages. He put the book down and got out of bed, since he had gotten home, he had changed into a pair of gym shorts and his hoodie. No one had said anything to him about it, surprisingly for him, he would’ve expected them to give him shit for an outfit that made it obvious that he had no intention of leaving the room, or the house for that matter.

As he paced around the room, he could hear a shower running. Wondering why it sounded so close, he realized that the shower was across from the room he was in. He went out and stared at the bathroom door. Even as he wasn’t really in the mood for company, he craved for the mere presence of other people around him, if he were to be alone in the house, he was afraid that he would probably break and let loose all of the emotions and thoughts that he so eagerly tried to ignore. He went down the hall to his left, to the guest room in which Luke and Nate were staying. No one was there. Then he went the other way around and stopped when he realized that the door to Julian’s room was slightly ajar, only a thin sliver of light could be seen coming out of the inch of space that was open. He peeked in and instantly went hard. He saw Julian and Martin kissing, both of them naked. Julian eagerly kissed and sucked on Martin’s neck, holding him with much stronger arms than what Billy would have thought him to have.

He took a short step closer, opening the door a bit more so he could have a better view. Then Julian pulled Martin’s legs open, making Martin’s boner stick out, and making Billy’s hardness become even more rigid. “Come on baby, give it to me,” Martin pleaded, as he kissed Julian’s chest. Julian stood up and reached to his side, getting a condom. Billy’s eyes almost popped out when he saw Julian’s cock, it was yummier than he’d thought. Then Julian rolled the condom on, rubbed some lube on his dick and got on top of Martin. In a matter of seconds, the expression on Martin’s face told him that Julian was slowly going in.

“Oh yeah,” Julian said, just above a whisper, before starting to gently thrust in and out, causing his ass to rock back and forth giving Billy quite a show. Then Billy realized that whoever was in the shower could catch him. Rapidly, he dashed back to the other twin’s room, feeling his dick bob up and down. Once in the room, he got on the bed again, lying on his stomach to hide the boner. But that only caused him to sigh as his dick pulsed in response to the pressure. He heard the shower go off and was thankful that he had managed to get back to the room before either Luke or Nate caught him peeping on Julian and Martin. He started reading once again, not paying much attention, but trying to look concentrated. He heard footsteps at the room’s door and kept looking down, hoping that no one would say something like ‘enjoyed the show?’ or ‘what the fuck did you think you were doing?’

“Hey, are you Nate’s friend, Billy?” he heard someone ask, the voice almost the same to Julian’s. He looked up and towards the door and prayed that his lust didn’t show as much as he knew it probably did. Standing there at the doorway was the missing twin, all wet, holding a towel in front of his waist with his left hand, while with his right hand he used the right end of the towel to dry his hair. “So, how have you been? “Good, in case you want any company, I’ll be downstairs, channel surfing, and if I find anything good, probably watching a movie. In case you’re interested,” Dylan replied, before pushing off the bed and walking by him. After he’d left, Billy sat back down on the bed and realized he was hard again. Olin library was half-empty, finals were not so close, so most students would take whatever book they needed and took it back to their rooms to work there. Becca, Jessie, Brent and Darryl, did not. “Omnipresent,” Becca responded as she picked up a synonym and antonym dictionary, “got it from Nate, with it, my essay will make it seem as if I am way smarter than I already am.”

“Like you weren’t smart all by yourself,” Jessie said arching her left eyebrow at Becca before resuming her high lighting.

“Yeah, yeah,” Becca said as she started jotting down a few lines onto her notes.

“Clever and bold, that’s how Professor Atkins described you,” Darryl said smiling.

“What?” Becca asked, in sudden interest.

“Isn’t he your Basic Sociology 2 professor?” Brent asked as he crossed his green eyes upon his notes, trying to see what odd shapes the distorted letters would form.

“Yup, he asked me if we were dating because he always sees us leaving together, and then he told me that it was good that we were together because he considers us two as some of his brightest students in that class. And he thinks it would be interesting what theories we could come up with or debate,” Darryl said, as Becca stared at him wide-eyed.

“I don’t know what he’s been smoking or what you’ve been snorting, but I suck at that class,” Becca answered before she started running her eyes over a book.

“Whatever, you’re just a perfectionist,” Darryl said.

“If I had to take that class, I would shoot myself,” Jessie said, mimicking the movement with her hand over her temple. Then everyone went silent. She suddenly remembered what had happened not over a week before and drew her hand down to her side. “I’m… god, I was so stupid,” she said before grabbing onto the front part of her skull with both hands.

“It’s ok, I don’t get the stuff that these two read either,” Brent said trying to draw them away from what he knew they were all thinking about.

“It’s ok, honey, it’s not like you summoned the devil or something, it’s just awkward,” Becca said and they all nodded.

“Knowing what happened, it kind of explains a lot…” Brent said. Becca sighed and nodded. She had already discussed it with Darryl, and even though she was reluctant to admit that her ex had been an abuse victim instead of an abuser, she had to admit that it made all the sense in the world. The problem was that it made her feel both good and guilty. Good that her first instincts on Michael had not been wrong; he had not been a bad person, just a troubled one. And she felt guilty, because it seemed to her that she should have pressed more about knowing about his family and past. She had barely asked about it and it made her feel stupid and selfish to think that most people would have done it, to get to know their boyfriend better, or just to express interest or as a courtesy. But she had not…

Sighing she got up and looked towards the shelves. “I’ll be right back, gotta go get this book on Bachelard,” she said as she headed towards them. Darryl and Jessie nodded as Brent resumed the balancing of his pen above his lip.

“Shouldn’t you study something?” Jessie asked Brent.

“You mean genius boy? He gets As with barely any studying…” Darryl said glaring at Brent from across the table, with Jessie glaring along.

“Uhm, I don’t feel safe around the two of you anymore,” Brent said putting down his pen on the table, neither Darryl nor Jessie had quit glaring at him, “Becca, get back here soon…” he said raising his voice trying to get her back.

“Yeah, yeah… Leave me alone for five minutes…” Becca said before letting out a sigh. She was looking for a book on a shelf’s final column, on the opposite side from their table. “Gaston Bachelard, I’ve seen you around here, come on…” she started saying as she kept tugging on books to be able to read their titles or the information on their spines. She looked for several minutes as she kept muttering curses and checking rows of books. All this time she could listen to a conversation held nearby, a woman giggled while a man with a soft voice talked to her in a tone that started to catch her attention. She looked back, feeling a sudden eavesdropping interest, feeling like she could probably catch a couple in the middle of flirting. Then, as she was about to turn around and follow the voices, she spotted the book she was looking for. A review and critique on Bachelard’s theories. “Great!” She loudly said as she pulled it out of the shelf, with perhaps, too much enthusiasm, for it went flying when she pulled it out.

After letting out an annoyed groan, she walked towards the book, a few feet from her, stepping out onto the second floor’s reception, very close to the stairs and elevator that lead to the other floors. She got on her knees and got the book, then as she was about to get up, she realized that the flirting couple was here, she could listen clearly to their conversation. She looked up and realized that they were at the information desk. Ms. Hepburn was giggling and blushing, as a tall and lean man with graying black hair talked to her over the desk. He was leaning forward, so she couldn’t see his face. “Well I did have my dancing days, back in the day,” Ms. Hepburn assured him as she kept her eyes low, but still smiling.

“I never quite liked dancing, but it was always good to see beautiful girls doing it. I’m sure watching you would take my breath away,” the man said with a diminishing tone, inviting, yet shy in a way. The voice, she was sure she knew the voice…

“Oh, Professor Hawthorne, don’t say such things, you’ll only trouble my mind with possibilities,” Ms. Hepburn replied as she looked down to her hands, which were resting one on top of the other on her lap. That’s why she knew the voice, it was Luke’s favorite professor, they had run into him around a lecture hall at some point. Could they be… They were… Oh dear god, she thought when realization hit her.

“Troubling you would be the last thing I would want to do,” Professor Hawthorne said, as he reached down and took Ms. Hepburn’s left hand from her lap then kissed it. This gesture made her turn a darker shade of red, “but I can not stand the need to ask you any longer, would you please go out to dinner with me? Evelyn?”

Ms. Hepburn blushed and a shy smile took over her face as she gently pulled her hand back and rested it above her chest, “it sounds lovely,” she answered smiling.

As much as she was hypnotized by this newfound side of Ms. Hepburn, Becca felt that she was intruding, so she stepped back and started heading back to her table. With Bachelard’s theoretical discussions pressed against her chest, and the first genuine smile she’d had for days over her face.

He smiled when he heard the gentle footsteps coming down the stairs. In a few seconds, Billy would come into the living room. As the cast of friends fought over whether they would or not watch the tape that Ross had accidentally recorded of himself and Rachel having sex, Billy sat down on the other end of the sofa. “A Friends fan, huh,” he said as Dylan looked back at him with a smile on his face.

“Well, it is comforting to see a bunch of people who have such a strong friendship and bond like these guys do,” Dylan said gesturing towards the TV.

“Well, some people don’t really have a group of other people that they can hang out with that comfortably,” Billy countered.

“Well, even people who belong to a minority, or that follow a trend or fad which isn’t so popular can always find someone to hang with,” Dylan remarked.

“What if they don’t, sometimes it just doesn’t happen,” Billy reiterated.

“Even if you don’t happen to have much in common with most people, you could always befriend them, it brings so much spice into a friendship when it happens that way,” Dylan said, as he sat up and pointed to the screen, “take Phoebe for example, she is the weirdest funniest wacko on the face of earth. She also is probably the only one who does not have a job that gets her good cash among the bunch. She has out of the ordinary beliefs and probably has less in common with any of the other friends. Yet, she is probably the funniest, and she gets along with all of the others perfectly, well most of the time at least.”

“Yeah, well lucky her, that still rarely ever happens,” Billy replied.

“I don’t mean that it happens to everyone,” Dylan said, then sighed before looking straight into Billy’s eyes, not knowing how weakened Billy felt by the gesture, “it happens if the bunch is welcoming. It also happens if the person who doesn’t feel like he or she has anything in common with the rest approaches them to see if they are welcoming or not.”

Feeling like it had not been a subtle remark at all, Billy gave him a bitter smile, “Ok then, tell me about your bunch, let’s see who has anything in common with me. We’ve already seen that you welcome me, somehow, so let’s cover the similarities.”

The bitterness of Billy’s words only worked to get him fired up, “Ok, I guess we can do this,” he said sitting up and moving to his left so he was face to face with Billy, “first, we have Nate. He’s from a farm in Texas; he was bullied by his father throughout his whole childhood and teenage years until he was kicked out for being gay.”

“Wonderful, someone else?” Billy asked him with a cold look.

“Luke didn’t have much trouble growing up, so let’s jump to Martin,” Dylan said a little louder than he realized, causing Billy’s smile to broaden at the first signs of Dylan’s anger in response to his mock interest, “Martin grew up with an older brother that he loved, and with his parents. That is, until his dad died of gastric cancer when he was too young to remember much about him,” Dylan was saying while Billy started losing his cockiness at the mention of death. Now he regretted having broached the subject as if it was a joke, “Then some years after his dad died, his mother turned into a drunk and died in a car crash, leaving him under the care of his brother.”

“I’m sorry…” Billy started saying.

“No, come on, you wanted the stats of the group, now let me go on,” Dylan said giving him an icy look, “Then a few years later, his brother started using drugs, and one morning, Martin wakes up to find his brother dead in his room from an overdose.”

“Just stop…” Billy said as he curled into a ball, drawing his eyes away from Dylan.

“No, now we got to me and Julian. As I hope you know, we are twins, he is the eldest, and I the youngest. When we were born, our mother died from labor complications,” Dylan said as his voice started breaking and tears welled in his eyes.

“I’m sorry… please stop!” Billy said as he put his hands over his ears.

Dylan angrily reached out and pulled his hands apart. “Wait, I’m not done,” he said as Billy tried to look away from him, “Then nearly a year ago, our father, who’d raised us all on his own, and loved us more than I could ever thank him for, died slowly of a horrible cancer. I got to sit there with Julian and watch as he slowly deteriorated until death came for him.” He got up and turned the TV off, then looked down at Billy, “Don’t you dare come here and fucking judge me, my family or my friends! You don’t fucking know us, because the times we’ve tried to get to know you, you’ve drawn back, or done like today and stayed the whole fucking day away from us!” He walked towards the stairs and Billy sank onto the couch knowing that he had just fucked up his chances with Dylan of having any sort of relation. Just as he was going to start going up, Dylan stopped and looked back at him, “You’ve had it rough, I’ll give you that, but so have we, and we don’t go around giving everyone an attitude just because we haven’t had an easy time growing up,” he said before going up.

Immediately after Dylan went up the stairs, Billy rose and started frantically pacing around the living room, rubbing his hands together because they felt sweaty and numb, his stomach turned and he constantly stopped to shake his head as he kept trying to come up with something that he could do to fix what he had just done. A barely audible voice in the back of his head kept giving him an answer right away, yet it wasn’t what he wanted to do, he didn’t have the balls for it. So, he remained for more than ten minutes going around the room trying to come up with something else. Letting out a sigh, he sat back down on the couch. He was screwed, there was one thing that he could do, do what his conscience was telling him to do. Go up to Dylan’s room, ask him if he could go in, and… apologize. He squeezed his right fist as hard as he could and held it in front of his face while he stared angrily at it, and then rammed it against his right thigh.

The blow made him bite down on his lower lip and muffle a groan, but it helped him release some frustration. Then he went up the stairs, noticing how his thigh had resented the blow more than he thought it would. As soon as he came within 3 feet of the bedroom door, he realized it was open and cursed himself for having to do this. He hated having to apologize; it was the most demeaning thing he could think of. He took a deep breath, twirled his neck to get rid of some of the stiffness he was feeling and then walked up to the door. Dylan was lying on the bed, right at the left edge of it, with his eyes closed and his I pod resting on this stomach and the earphones on. He couldn’t hear what it was that Dylan was listening to, so he figured he didn’t have the volume too high, maybe he would still hear him. He knocked on the open door and Dylan opened one eye, as he looked towards the door.

“What?” he asked flatly.

“Can I… Uhm, come in?” Billy asked, hating the fact that his voice was raspy and he felt incredibly nervous.

Dylan closed his eye and nodded. He walked in and halted right next to the bed, with only a few inches keeping him apart from Dylan’s body. Feeling at a loss for words, he started fidgeting with his hands and looking around the room. His first attempt of speaking ended up turning into a babbling incoherence. Breathing in deeply, he cursed himself mentally for acting like such an idiot. Dylan looked up at him and saw him mouthing words as he shook his head and smiled realizing what Billy was probably struggling to do.

“Got something to say?” Dylan asked with a knowing smile on his face.

“I fucking hate doing this!” Billy said as he looked down at Dylan, “I’m sorry, you were right… I don’t know you guys and I have been an ass to y’all even when you have tried to be nice to me and all.”

Dylan nodded, and then said, “at least you acknowledge it.”

Billy glared at him for a few seconds before looking down at the floor as he shook his head. “I don’t know how it is that you guys do this shit,” he said as he sat down on the bed, with his back to Dylan.

“What shit?” Dylan asked as he turned off his player and took the earphones out.

“Share your crap like I realize you have, you know about who has gone through what and all that,” he shook his head once more as he dropped his hands to his sides and Dylan sat up behind him, “I can’t open up like that. It’s like your publishing your life and setting it out in the open for everyone to know it.”

“We don’t spread our lives around like a public story at all!” Dylan said as he moved down the bed to sit next to Billy, “we talk to each other, because we trust each other, not because we have to tell everyone what we’ve been through.” Billy looked away from him and Dylan sensed that Billy was probably thinking the same thing as he was, everyone Billy had trusted in before had broken that trust in one way or another. Something had driven him into accepting staying over with them for the weekend, it had been either a desperate cry for company, or a need to break away from the loneliness that he had been using to shelter himself. “If you must know, I didn’t quite think I could share my feelings with most people after my father died last year. It was something that came with time, but if my friends hadn’t stayed by my side and waited for me to be ready to talk, then I would probably have gone crazy by keeping everything in,” he said and Billy slowly nodded as he stared at the floor.

His forearms were dangling at the sides of his body while he rested his elbows on his knees. His whole posture, the weariness with which he was staring at the floor, as if he was struggling to quiet down the thoughts that were surely racing through his mind, made Dylan realize that Billy was trying to build up the courage to really share with him. Dylan smiled to himself, the mere fact that Billy was sitting next to him, considering to share his pain with him, made him feel touched. Billy sighed and reached up to run his hands through his hair, messing it up. The messy look made Dylan flinch, he realized that he had been paying close attention to Billy’s body and looks and came to notice that he was feeling attracted to him. He made a mental note to stop himself; he knew it was too fast like to let his hormones drag him towards anyone, especially considering that he had just broken up with Tommy. Just as he was about to move away, Billy looked his way and said, “I need a drink.”

“Got no booze around,” he said.

“I might be able to fix that,” Billy said, looking up shyly.

“You’re on,” he answered and then cursed himself because he knew his dick had answered for him.

They sat at the farthest table from the entrance, which made him feel that they were trying to keep him from going out of the restaurant. He knew something had happened. They were acting too shady and had been whispering to each other throughout the whole ride there. He knew something was up; there was no doubt of that. He had called Susie and had gotten no answer, as soon as he mentioned how odd that seemed to him. Julian and Luke had started saying that she was probably out, Julian even said she had mentioned a boyfriend to him. She had not mentioned any dates at all to him, but he could tell that she had been hiding something from him. Now their mention of this had only lighted his anger even more, he wanted to know why she had kept something like that from him.

What had assured him that something had happened was that they had kept on pushing him into going out for an early dinner with them. He had acquiesced, knowing that the only way to get them to tell him the truth was to play along. As long as he would stay calm and let them find a way to say whatever it was that they had trouble telling him, they would just spit it out. He hoped. In all honesty, he was scared shitless, because the level of secrecy and fear that he knew they were experiencing about whatever this was made him think that it had to be something huge. The waitress came and delivered their food, which was good, for he knew that he was glaring at both Julian and Luke, while Martin looked like a deer caught in the headlights of a car. The poor thing probably had nothing to do with the whole ordeal, but he had to know something or otherwise he wouldn’t seem so uncomfortable.

“Here’s yours,” the waitress said as she placed his chicken and baked potato in front of him. Martin had managed to put a smile on his face after she dropped his burger in front of him and Julian and Luke were already toying with their food.

Given that he knew they wouldn’t really eat unless they talked about whatever it was that they didn’t want to say, he decided to cut to the chase. “Okay, say it, I know you guys don’t want to tell me this, but whatever it is, you just have to get it out in the open already,” he said. Martin looked like he wanted to sink into his seat and stay there for the rest of the night, as Julian got a serious look on his face after putting his fork and knife back on the table.

Luke had his eyes closed and was letting out a sigh, then he spoke up, “I know you must be nervous and probably a little angry at us for taking this long to stop beating around the bush on this. But believe me, it’s nothing we were expecting to have to deal with, at least I wasn’t expecting it at all.”

“I’m not angry; I’m just frustrated that you have spent the last couple of hours avoiding this conversation. It seems like it is something serious and I feel like you should have said it from the beginning,” Julian rubbed his temples as Nate spoke and Luke’s eyes were glazed with tears so he stopped and couldn’t take the waiting anymore, “Ok, now you are scaring me, tell me Susie and Ginny are okay.”

“They are, it’s not them,” Julian said, with his eyes closed.

“Then who?” he asked, feeling a lump forming in his throat as he realized that something had to have happened to his mother.

“It’s your father,” Luke said, his eyes were weary and Nate felt a chill go up his spine as Luke continued, “he passed away this morning.”

“We know you were not exactly on good terms with him, I know how I feel about him, but he was still your father. That’s why we didn’t know how to tell you,” Julian said as he rubbed the space in between his upper lip and his nose. Martin was staring down at the bite that he had given his burger before they had opened the can of worms that had silenced them all of a sudden.

So, the old bastard was dead, great. He sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose, dreading the migraine that he knew was bound to hit him before the night ended. “How?” he asked.

Martin sat up and looked away, Nate saw him swallow and knew by just looking at him and then at Luke and Julian’s faces that neither one of them wanted to have to tell him. They started telling him the story that Susie had told them; afterwards, he knew he kept asking for details and that they kept bearing with the dreadful facts that they gave him, but the rest of dinner went by like a blur for him.

They were lying on Dylan’s bed, Dylan with his head resting against the headboard and Billy lying across the foot of the bed, with his feet dangling under Dylan’s. The mere contact had made Billy flinch initially and had given them both a hard-on in a matter of seconds. Now they were both sipping on screwdrivers that Dylan had fixed for them. These were their second drinks. Billy had given him the bottle of Smirnoff Vodka that he was hiding in his bag, and he was curious as to where he got it from, but he had refrained from asking. Now after some time having drinks, they were both chatting and Billy seemed to have relaxed a lot. Yet, Dylan was a little stressed himself, because every movement Billy made caused him to look and stare as his muscles moved, as his hair fell back over his face after he had brushed it off his forehead and at every small movement that Billy made. He was in trouble. “This is some good stuff,” Billy said as he sipped from his cup, as he looked away from Dylan when he realized Dylan was staring at him.

“Have served quite a few,” Dylan said as he tried to avert his eyes off Billy. “So, where did you get the bottle?”

“Stole it from the old man’s liquor cabinet” Billy answered as he once again glanced over at Dylan.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to go into that,” he shifted a little in bed to try and get some weight off his shoulders, he had been leaning on them for a while and they were beginning to become stiff, as he did, his knee brushed against Billy’s thigh. Billy moved a little away as he felt the contact, and as he did, they both felt a sort of relief of killing the brief physical contact. He regained his composure, and Billy had begun to look at the same spot that he had been staring at on the wall for the past half hour. So, he went on, “me and my buddies from school used to drink more than what we probably should have a few years back, but we started to lay back on it a little.”

“Yeah, I get it,” Billy said as he took a sip from the mug in which Dylan had poured the drink for him, “I used to drink a little with…” he managed to say before stopping himself. He kept quiet and then took another sip.

Dylan poured some more orange juice into his mug, it was stronger than what he had intended to make it, and he knew Billy’s was just as strong, that was why he was sipping on it so gingerly. He tried to think of something to say that would divert Billy from talking about Michael, for he knew that Michael was the one with whom Billy used to drink and that was the reason for him to quiet down so suddenly. However, he couldn’t come up with anything that he could say to drive things away from the topic, and he knew that if he wanted to build trust with Billy, then he would have to take the risk and start touching the subject, even if it had to be done little by little. “You used to drink with him,” he said, and even though Billy seemed to flinch for a moment, he nodded and Dylan went on, as politely as he could, “I’m sorry, I don’t mean to pry into that subject.”

“It’s okay, I guess it’s just not something I’ve really thought of talking about so far,” Billy said and now he took a drink from his mug, no sip this time.

It was their second drink and Dylan knew he was already getting buzzed, and now that Billy shifted in bed, his movements seemed to require more effort from him. Yes, they were both fairly drunk, and after only two drinks, thanks to his nervousness and secret desire to have something coming out of their time alone. God, what was he thinking? If he really wanted to get Billy to trust him, having sex with him wasn’t exactly the most sane and mature way of doing it, now was it? Deciding to get back to safer grounds, he decided to keep the conversation going. “It’s obvious to me that the two of you are very close, I’m sorry that you’ve had to deal with all of this shit, I couldn’t imagine having to be separated from Julian or anything like that.”

Billy seemed to smile, while at the same time his eyes became glossy, a mixture of happiness and sadness that threw Dylan off. He didn’t know what it was that he’d said, he thought he’d been careful enough not to say anything that could hurt or annoy Billy. He put his mug on the floor, next to the bottle of Vodka and the Orange Juice box, then scooted down the bed until he was next to Billy. “What did I say? I didn’t mean to offend you or…” he was saying before Billy interrupted him.

He heard voices again, chatter, soft laughter, then the door of the bathroom, and then footfalls that approached. He didn’t want to see who it was, so he looked down and then spotted an opened and discarded condom wrapper on the carpet. He looked away and rubbed his nose bridge while the footsteps got closer, then they stopped. He looked up and saw a wet, towel wrapped Billy staring at him, with a shocked look on his face.

“Ok, I’ve had a pretty nasty and long day, so don’t worry, I won’t give you any crap, just pick that up,” he said as he nodded back towards the condom wrapper laying on the carpet. Billy swallowed and looked about ready to panic, so he added, “I’m beginning to like you, and to think that you’re a good guy, so we’ll just have a talk to get a few things clear later.”

Billy swallowed around the lump in his throat and then looked up to him his big blue eyes glazed over, “okay,” he said and then started walking towards the wrapper.

“He’s one of the most precious people in the world to me, treat him with respect,” he said as he walked out. Billy nodded to him and then he just kept on walking until he reached his room and crashed on top of the bed.

This semester is turning out to be really tough, but taking the literature classes that I am taking along with the composition class I always have to take, is starting to make me think that I should just switch from the minor in translation to the minor in English Lit.
