National Defense Authorization Act 2012

The Senate handily voted down motions to strike the language, to amend it to not include U.S. citizens, to amend it to not pertain to U.S. territory....

If there have been any "Second Amendment" moments in recent years, this is certainly one.
Maybe we can get Sarah Palin to shoot John McCain.

Ok, I'm glad they voted it down. When I first read the story, it really worried me. That's that, then. For now.

Ok, I'm glad they voted it down. When I first read the story, it really worried me. That's that, then. For now.

The only things that got voted down were amendments to FIX it. The language allowing the military to operate within the U.S. and arrest anyone they decide to accuse of being a terrorist and hold those people forever without any requirement to even inform family, and to deny contact with an attorney as well as the constitutionally guaranteed right of habeus corpus is still there -- and apparently passed.

Which means now it's time to bombard Obama to keep his promise to veto it.

I searched the bill for detainees and failed to find where it changes the definition from current detainees to American citizens.

EDIT: Didn't read the update. I did see where it prohibits detainees operations on US SOIL.

So maybe they did get it fixed, or at least lessened, in the final version?

Too late at night for me to do any searching on this, if I'm going to go shooting up in the snow zone tomorrow.

This just in. Getting an email from Alternet, they report that Obama will veto the bill. Huzzah.

White House Says It Will Veto Domestic Military Detention Bill
Obama stands by veto threat after contentious Senate debate.

The White House spokesman said on Friday that President Obama would veto a massive 2012 defense spending bill that authorized the American military to arrest and indefinitely detain U.S. citizens within the United States in the war on terror.

When asked where the president stood on the bill, Press Secretary Jay Carney replied:

"We have said that the language in this bill would jeopardize our national security by restricting flexibility in our fight against al Qaeda.

What's really warped is that gobs of senators fought for the military to have this authority, while the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the Director of the CIA, the Director of the FBI, and others were all saying "No!"

Idiot politicians. ](*,)

Ya got that more than right. I got an email today on Republican Tax Hypocrisy. Where they say tax cuts, tax cuts for the wealthy then when Obama wants to extend payroll tax credit for the rest of America, Republicans say NO!!!!

Time for Obama to start campaigning for the people: point out every break the Republicans have been trying to give the rich, the polluters, and others. And use that vid of Reagan a lot, calling for a return to Reagan's tax good sense.
