Prepare for incoming! The UK and the EU have plans for online ID that may trend worldwide!
Paper based identification is not going away, therefore I see no advantage in "national" electronic ID systems.

Why make it mandatory? Centralized databases are a security nightmare.

Maybe I should relax as the British PM says it'll all be fine - no worries.

Exactly.
In the UK it is being trumpeted as a means to stem illegal immigration by making it impossible to work or gain access to healthcare etc. What a crock of shit! Illegals don't work in legitimate jobs. They don't pay taxes.
 
I don't expect the introduction of ID cards in the UK to be successful. The whole concept of being required to carry ID is widely considered un-British, something the Germans might have imposed on us had they won WWII, but which otherwise belongs only in authoritarian foreign states.

ID cards are being talked about now in connection with illegal immigration and the government's thinking appears to be that they might get away with it because the average Briton's dislike of illegal immigration exceeds their dislike of being made to carry an Ausweis. The government is suggesting that it would become unlawful to employ someone unless they held the appropriate ID. The problem with that is that the people who currently employ illegal immigrants are for the most part already breaking various laws by doing so, not least those relating to tax, and are unlikely to be deterred by one more on the way to making a quick buck.
 
I already have a digital national ID with my Social Insurance number that any employer would require, or in its absence, another Visa number.

If the Brits think that having a separate universal digital ID that you have on your phone is going to stop employers from hiring undocumented immigrants, they are not only ingenuous, they are once again demonstrating what stupid gits they are.

I actually meant to amend to specifically finger the Brit government wonks who came up with the policy...but my comment is pretty much targeted at the anti-immigration racists in Britain who likely think that this would be a good idea to weed out any non-citizens from 'stealing' their jobs.

The government is using concern about illegal immigration as a way of conning the public into accepting mandatory ID cards. As I think everyone here agrees, ID cards will make virtually no difference to illegal immigration because most illegal immigrants don't work for the sort of employers who obey the existing laws. The Blair government tried this about 20 years ago and dropped it in the face of opposition. The present proposals are apparently supported by the Tony Blair Institute and anything linked to that smarmy-voiced prat rings an alarm bell in my mind.

As with any government project, if this ever goes ahead it's bound to run over time and over budget. Also it looks like any contract could well go to one of Tony's cronies. I imagine a lot of people will just ignore "mandatory" ID cards if they're ever actually implemented and the whole thing will end up being a waste of time.

It is not intended to solve any immigration problems. The problem it is aimed at is called Nigel Farage, the populist conman.
America voted for a populist conman, how is that working out, does anybody know?
The ID scheme is just red meat to be thrown at the xenophobes, there's a lot of them about. Sir Kier knows perfectly well that it won't work but with Mr Fagash working the racism card so skillfully, Labour has to look as if it is doing something.
 
It might cause havoc to voting rights. There was a time about 12 years ago when I did not have a photo ID of any kind. But I could always vote
One question. How much will this new ID cost?
 
Smartphone uploads will be free and anyone without a smartphone will receive a physical card for free.

I don't see what the fuss is all about though.

For those of us with passports who have travelled over our lifetimes, we already have photo ID and it is digitzed now as well.

Drivers' licenses are photo ID and they are digitized.

My Health card is a photo ID and it is also digitized.

And about 15 years ago, anyone without a valid driver's license was required by Ontario to get a universal photo ID that could be used where required.

So I find it hard to think that Brits aren't already well covered by as well by digital ID.

Britain, which is absolutely saturated with cameras watching its population at all times and already likely has digital face recognition capability seems late to the game with this smartphone/card ID.

It rather reinforces that this is all performative theatre by the government.
 
I still like my plastic because if i lose my phone, all my information is gone.
 
^ This. Always have hard copy ID.

Because a phone is a very undependable thing.
