The changing social landscape of the United States has prompted new efforts to highlight a sense of community.

First Tuesday in August is National Night Out across the USA. Cities and towns host block parties with local law enforcement and firefighters.

Of course, not all cities hold NNO events but those that do hope neighbors will get to know each other. Hey, I've seen worse ideas!

Absolutely not for me
Virtue signalling of the worst kind

This is not how it all started.

I recall Neighborhood Watch volunteers organizing block parties to generate a sense of community, a kind of "take back our streets" movement. Public and emergency services took part in the background. But now local governments are the organizers and law enforcement appears to have "taken charge" of these events.

I know very little about my neighbours, but it's quite enough to know that I don't like any of them.

As for 'first responders', it's a ridiculous notion to believe that we would ever see the same people twice. I think to do so, one would have to live in a very hostile and dangerous environment where emergency calls are abnormally frequent.

Hmm. I don't think I've been out of my apartment after 7 PM in at least five years, so there's that . .

Unless I can take a policeman home with me and tie him up and bloe raspberries on his tummy...nope.

because otherwise in my experience they are all borderline personalities with spousal abuse in their profile.

A lot of people will not want to go to the party in case ICE gatecrash.

Exactly my thoughts too. These types of meetings between the public and first responders have resulted in ICE enforcement actions, sometimes days after the events.
