National [USA] Disgrace

Is it true charity when the recipient must meet criteria and certain profile?

Here is wishing for karma ....

I wasn't aware of the discrimiination by the Salvation Army. Thanks for that info.

It makes me sick when I hear about parents throwing their kids out of their home when they find out they're gay. Its something that I have trouble comprehending. We've heard some real life stories on these boards about this sort of thing.

Thanks for this thread, Rand.

the sad part is that these kids end up in boystown
selling their body to survive

what about covenant house for these kids

better then the sally ann i think

Someone post the link to that news story and I believe it.

Fuck! I couldn't help but cry when I read this. I'm currently in the process of finding a new place to live, because my parents are the uber-christian type as well. I just turned 21 and living in the shadows was affecting my everyday life.

I was depressed for about 5 years, but I just kept moving along; foolishly I thought I could just keep it to myself. Over the past 2 years the depression, the fear, the anxiety, and the web of lies built up to the point where I didn't even want to get out of bed. I didn't want to go to school, and I didn't want to go to work anymore.

I finally told myself, "I can't live like this anymore!" It was literally killing me. I started thinking about sad things like hurting myself, but I realized that I wasn't the problem. The problem is that soooo many people that claim to follow The Bible's teachings are total hypocrites. All the preaching about loving and accepting... for all their holier than thou art attitude and gossiping... most of the Christians I know are not as devout as they claim to be. This includes, but is not limited to, my parents.

I am so unworthy of love that I now have to leave my home because "there's no way in Hell some little fagot is going to living under [their] roof." It broke my heart, but I'm getting over it. I feel like I'm back to my old self again. I'm excited to be going back to college, and I'm happier at work and I am a better worker and friend for just telling it like it is.

I'm an adult with my own, valid, feelings, and I damn it... I'm proud of the person I am. The only people I have lied to in the past 7 years is my parents. I'm was never ashamed of being homosexual, but what I started hating myself for was being a liar and a hypocrite; In my mind, I was no better than the bigoted attitude and behavior I despised.

Luckily, I was able to at least appeal to a small part of the human decency that remains behind the blinded eyes of my parents so that I can just stay at home for 2 months while I get all of my shit straightened out. I've got my lesbian best friend moving with me, so she can also get out of a similar situation. This is going to be hard both mentally and financially, but I'm certain that the end results will be well worth all the struggle. I'm finally going to be able to live my own life, on my terms.

I really feel for all the youth that can't find comfort in their own parents and either get the boot or feel they have to runaway from home. You have to be in a pretty bad spot if you feel like you'd find more comfort on the streets than living with people who are supposed to love you and comfort you and support you. I know that these are the sort of feelings that can even lead to suicide, and it's a crying shame that so many people in our society think you're doing the world a favor by offing yourself...

I need to stop typing now 'cause I'm starting to get angry,

Forget the whole shelter idea. That is not a good place for a child to grow up in. If the parents want to kick out their child then they should be forced to pay child support! Get the kid an apartment, buy their food, provide transportation so they can get to school, buy their clothes, and if they're real young, supply them w/ a nanny. That's generally what happens when a couple divorces. The non-custodial parent pays up--this should be the same. This is nothing less than abandonment.

Can you provide a link or something to the story. I've already tried googling it. I want to make copies for my church meeting.

these kids are lost
they probably came from abusive homes
and they probably don't trust anyone
and had sell themselves to survive

no the streets are not a place for these kids

so how will you get a street kid an apartment
when the line up for subsided housing is so damn long

who's going to buy proper clothes for them
and make sure they go to school

your church?

Address the real problem guys. As nontaxed entities that discriminate, they ought to have their untaxed status removed. Since they use most of what they are given to maintain their church, and not for charity, they ought to be paying taxes. All churches and religious organizations with nontax status should be taxed on any business related income if it does not go 100% to charities they supposedly support.

These so called Christian evangelical groups like Falwell's people et al, used their monster incomes to become political entities influencing the US government, which is expressly forbidden when the group is nontaxable. The IRS ought to be taking this away from every church and religious organization making political statements, and showing their intolerance for any other group with their charities.

Faith based charities was just another way for the Repugs in power to shirk their responsibilities. Disgusting!!!!!

Pretty Pete, I'm suggesting that the parent who kicked the minor child out should bear the responsibility! It is their responsibility to provide their kids w/ adequate food, shelter, education, etc. As such, if you kick them out for whatever reason, you shouldn't get a free break from taking care of their needs. What's the difference btwn that and child abandonment. I wonder why they don't report to child services? I'm assuming it's b/c they are afraid of the system (yeah, it sucks) or they don't know about it.

Yes, my church does lots of community service work. Are the people gay that we're helping...I don't know one way or the other. I'm sure that a lot of non-Christians participate in service activities before anyone misinterprets that statement.
