Oh please. There is nothing wrong with honoring "soul food" during Black History Month. That's part of our culture and history too. I helped to organize a very upscale, well attended gala event one year for Black History Month, and we damn sure had some soul food on the menu along with the fancy (white folks + siddity negros) fare. I grew up on soul food. It's good! But I wouldn't recommend eating it every day; too much can kill you. Celebrate where you came from, and don't be ashamed.

If you have any appreciation for culinary techinque you will understand why fried chicken is something to be proud of.

Ummm....You do realize that NBC Studios is not having an African American Festival in their parking lot? Of Course Japanese & Italians would be FINE eating Food while standing on a side walk at some Festival event held down-town...

NBC studios is NOT a Festival it's a place of Business...The Cafeteria Lady chose to make-up her menu and it was taken down...Her Menu didnt need to be labeled "African American"...All she needed to do was post the Food items she planned to serve and take her Ass back to the kitchen...
 
Not only didn't I find it racist (and kevbo said it extremely well, comparing to St. Partick's Day), but I would LOVE to eat that menu! No, actually I mean I'd like to eat the FOOD that the menu lists - the menu would probably taste like cardboard or paper or something LOL.

It makes me think quickly of places like Priscilla's in Hillside IL, Sylvia's in Harlem, etc. - great, great food!

The woman's heart was certainly in the right place and I think it's a real shame when society at large has embarrassed a minority group to a point where eating fried chicken and watermelon is something to be done in the closet. Soul food is comprised of many different dishes and yes, fried chicken happens to be one of them. There's nothing wrong with that!
