Hey there,

Thanks for stumbling across my blog. I guess both of us have nothing better to do just before the new year breaks in?

In less than 24 hours, the Sydney Opera House is going to be lit up with fireworks, drunks are going to bash each other up and new year's resolutions will be broken within the first hour.

But hey, as least it won't be as bad as New York, where 2011 will be greeted by a giant over-riped carrot also known as Snooki.

2011 could be argued as the start of a brand new decade or just the second year of an era where information is the new black gold. 2011 could even be argued as the last year before the world collapses according to the Mayan Calendar. You can blame Hollywood for that interpretation.

Given that Facebook and social media is going to become a central aspect in our everyday lives over the coming years, most of us are seemingly comfortable with presenting our true identities online. But the fact that both you and I are using aliases on this very forum seems to contradict this trend.

And this isn't due to the social opposition that particularly affects us in the LGBT sphere. The fact that almost everyone on all large public forums use aliases highlights that we still yearns for that last bit of anonymity, The fact that we can ditch one identity for another. The ability to be irresponsible and free for a brief moment still enthralls us.

What social media is forcing us, for better or for worse, is to be responsible. Actions online will now have consequences in the real world. So for those drunks whose photos will be uploaded onto Facebook, or those who plan to post up "regrettable updates" on their Twitter feeds the morning after New Year's Eve, be warned. The beginning of 2011 might be a blur, but the world will make sure that you remember your actions for the rest of time.

There will be no such thing as a "brand new year"
