Need advice for a romantic-ish gift

I want to send a small gift to some friends overseas; ideally I'd like to send them a bunch of flowers, but their local (online) florists are way too expensive for my minuscule budget. So I need to think of something else - chocolates seem a bit dull...

Anybody got any ideas?

I'm so glad that you tossed this out here.

Being that you're from the Land Down Under, surely there are some shops in your area that could put together an Australian "care-package" that could be easily shipped to your friends overseas.

If not local, then perhaps online:

You didn't say where overseas, but there's a company here in the U.S. called Simply Australian that could ship some stuff for you.

You get the idea.

AND since it's from you, I don't think that your friends really care (I wouldn't! Just happy that you're thinking about me. )

Does it have to be flowers? Is there a local restaraunt in thier area that you could phone in/email in lunch on you?

Depends where they / you are? Is there anything that you can get that is not avaliable to them? Having worked overseas, I really appreciate friends sending me things from home that are not avaliable where I am working. They often seem like weird presents but are very welcome.

Failing that what about a good book? it is also really easy to wrap and post.

Tea is a great idea if it´s ok with the post office (some countries have strict regulations). What about a picture, a good book or a special CD (jazz, classical, etc.) as alternatives?

I like the idea of a book or CD. There are so many books out there and you can usually find something that fits the occasion or conveys the intended sentiment. Avoid clothing, it's just never an appropriate gift these days. Really knowing more about the recipients and occasions would help. An anniversary for two partners who are an engineer and an advertising guy would merit something like a techy wall clock or something like that. Something more appropriate for a dear distant aunt might be something like a bright photos book on flowers, a small pot and a packet of seeds for a kitchen window. Who are we talking about?

(edit) Whoops, it's very late/early and I ignored the 'romantic-ish' gift part. One of my local stores sells candles that are a special wax that turns to oil when the candle burns, scented in chocolate or vanilla or mint. It's very erotic because it can be burnt for the smell or poured for hot oil that doesn't burn the skin, fabulous!

I agree with the suggestion to send them something characteristically Australian, that they probably can't get where they are. Haven't the faintest idea what that would be, though. Maybe a case of vegemite?
