Calling all tea experts around the world....

First question...
Can you make loose tea in an automatic coffee pot?(I have several new ones still in the box)Has anyone used this method before? Pros-Cons?Not hot enough maybe?

Second question...
What is good loose black tea that taste great, but doesn't cost an arm and a leg.I need those  I know the Pianist has probably mentioned what he drinks,as well as others. If anyone can chime in,it would be appreciated.

Thank you,Love Vannie(John)

For all tea related questions, please see your nearest Teavana store. For those outside the United States and Canada, you don't know what tea is. No, not even you England. Sorry.

You probably shouldn't use a coffee maker, unless it's never been used for coffee.
A tea steeper would be nice for loose tea grounds... or a tea ball.

I've been drinking tea (in addition to coffee) for my entire life.

I don't need the fancy gourmet brands.....

My brand of choice is a good old American brand (although its roots go back to Montreal, Quebec).....Salada, packaged in Little Falls, NY:D

I've used a coffee maker before, but all I did was start it without the coffee grounds in it...when it was done, I just put tea bags in the pot of hot water

it was an extra coffee maker that I got as an Xmas gift

Great sites with good tips.I will give this a whirl.I will never know unless I experiment a bit.If the tea isn't hot enough,I can always zap my mug in the micro.I thought I went to every tea site on the net,but you both gave me two more.

I will use a brand new pot for tea only.I'm looking to be able to upgrade my tea quality(I'm a teabagger and my hand is tired )and make larger quantities of tea that I don't have to babysit for a while.Thank guys :)

Hey ronboy...

I have Salada,Tetley, Lipton and PG Tips teabags in the house. All fine by me for a "one" cup of tea.I wanted a way to quit making so many individual cups.I drink a ton of tea since I quit smoking several years ago.

If the coffeemaker uses a wire mesh filter, it should be fine. If it uses paper filters, the tea won't taste as good.

As for good, affordable loose-leaf tea, I've had good luck with The Republic of Tea.

You say that but queer your pitch by asking about making tea in a coffee maker, Get a teapot for Christ's sake! [-X

You can just put loose tea in the pot and it will settle. You just need to put in the right amount so that it doesn't become to strong when it is fully steeped.

Warm the pot with boiling water first. Add the water to the tea about 30 seconds after you take it off the boil.

Use a tea strainer when pouring into a cup if you don't like tea leaves in your cup although they will be at the bottom and rarely create a choking hazard.

As others have said....never, ever use a coffee maker for tea. It ruins both the tea and any future coffee.

If the coffeemaker uses a wire mesh filter, it should be fine. If it uses paper filters, the tea won't taste as good.

Would it really be all that different from a tea bag? Personally I prefer paper filters for my coffee, anyway. Can't imagine mesh filters making tea taste any better when it don't do that for coffee.

Time to get a kettle, teapot and a cosy. No need for the coffee maker at all.

. . . .

For me, the water must boil, the tea has to have time to steep, and it has to be made fresh.

I doubt that running hot water over it in a coffee maker would do. And I'd never use anything plastic in the process, anyway.

If you don't mind 'aged' tea, you might try making your tea in a heavy ceramic/glass teapot and then keep that on an electric hotplate. Still, I wouldn't leave it there too long. Tea just doesn't age/set well – not even iced tea.

LilBit.... I do have a permanent mesh filter basket. Will try it.Thanks for the link.

Anders123 .... I like that gif Anders.

Kahaih....After this,I may need to reconsider my tea making shortcuts.I don't mind a short time aged tea,so I might just have to stick with that method.

chrisrobin....now thats stuck in my head  LOL

Thanks everyone.

For loose tea, I buy empty tea bag pouches

I've used them to infuse mint that I've grown and dried myself.

I like sweet fragrant aroma of freshly brewed jasmine pearl or jasmine silver needle tea.

I like Constant Comment. Has an orange/spice flavor.

Paper filters out some of the flavor, and I find that it gives the tea a bit of a papery flavor. (Same with coffee.) I'm not a huge fan of tea bags either.
