Neneh Cherry - Dream Baby Dream (Four Tet Remix)

NENEH CHERRY & AFRIKA BABY BAM - NINA (PRODUCED BY FOUR TET) Neneh Cherry and the Jungle Brothers’ Afrika Baby Bam do slack spoken word on a Kieran Hebden produced beat.

Neneh Cherry and Jungle Brother Afrika Baby Bam have teamed up for the new, Four Tet produced Nina. Nina follows on from both last year’s very positively received ‘The Cherry Thing’ and the subsequent remixes EP, which Four Tet contributed to. Four Tet’s beat is a slack shuffle, lacking in melody but still carrying a jazzy vibe that’s a perfect fit for Cherry and Baby Bam’s spoken word. It sounds a little like something from 1970, but in a good way.

Neneh Cherry Will Get an Overdue New York Debut

The itinerant avant-pop singer Neneh Cherry has a routine when she visits New York, where she lived as a child and has intermittently since. Most of the stops are food-related: a diner breakfast, pastrami from Katz’s, Veselka on her old corner in the East Village, and, of course, a slice of pizza.

“Walk a lot, get the subway — there’s a whole little O.C.D. round that I have to do to feel like I’m there,” she said over the phone from London ahead of her forthcoming trip.

Conspicuously missing, until now, has been music. Despite calling the city her “backbone and biggest inspiration,” Ms. Cherry has never played a proper show of her own in New York. That changes on Friday night at the Highline Ballroom, where she will bring her singular mix of jazzy pop, vintage hip-hop and electronic music in support of “Blank Project,” her 2014 album and first solo release since 1996.

Striding Back Into the Limelight With Heady, Hip-Swiveling Glee

Neneh Cherry had international hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when she was a sassy young woman in her 20s, immersed in London’s overlapping post-punk, hip-hop and club cultures. She fused them in songs like “Buffalo Stance,” in 1988, rapping and singing about pimping, poverty, dancing and love. Now 50, she was just as bold in her New York City solo debut on Friday night at the Highline Ballroom. “It’s kind of a deep thing that this is actually at last happening,” she said. “It’s about the now, right here, right now.”

Does anyone know why there was an 18-year gap between Man and Blank Project? That's a long time. 7 Seconds is still a beautiful and evocative song. I also like her brother's music, especially his debut album.
