Nervous about Singing

I am nervous. I have to sing "O, Holy Night" for a community wide Christmas Eve service. Nothing Like singing an 11 page song with an octave leap at the end in front of 400+ people.

LOL, I hope you realize that leaping octaves is illegal in most states ....

I'm sure you'll do just fine!

Seriously, once your 5-20 seconds into the song and you realize that the audience is there supporting you, that's when you'll really start to get into the song and the music and by the time you really start to enjoy it, the song will be over with. Good Luck and have fun.

The audience is mostly made up of people who know they could never do as good as you (and they'll never catch on to the little mistakes you might make). Don't get me started on hundreds of pop singers who can't sing and yet sell gazillion records. At least you know what an octave is, you'll do fine, they're gonna love you. So get up there and knock 'em dead.

And if you do make a mistake, smile and carry on. Again, they'll never know what happened.

Being that I can't sing, I have never had that problem. If I had to give a talk in front of them, I would be nervous as hell.

But remember, in the average listening audience the majority of people do not really know or understand the difference between good and great when it comes to singing. Do your vocal warm ups, (don't I sound like a vocal teacher?), relax and enjoy the moment.

A couple of years ago I was doing a number and totally lost my place - lost sight of the text and notes - and just adlibbed it til I could pick it up again - hell, no one knew except one person who thought I was using a different arrangement and wanted a copy of it!

It is normal to be nervous but it will go well - I like to get so into the music that when I am done I realize that I had forgotten that audience was there listening

Turn up the lights so you can hardly see the crowd. Don't look at people, rather stare at something fixed on the walls.

You wouldn't be doing it if deep down you didn't think you could. Stop worrying and sing the balls off it--cause you know you can!
