Hi, I've been searching the internet a lot looking for a new computer, LCD/flatscreen monitor, and a printer/scanner/fax - like a package deal. I know it's cheaper to build your own and I have done that before, but I don't want to do that again. I would appreciate any advice or tips. Thanks!:-)

Thank you very much for the links and advice. I really appreciate it.

Are laptops or all-in-one PCs an option?

Perhaps I'm lost (yes, it's been known to happen), but the first mention of gaming was by M1000 here

At none of the links provided did I see 'zomg gaming rigs'.

So, what gives?

Ahh, I now see. He did recommend a non-gaming PC, too.

I do also know that computers labelled for one use can be used for another. Such as macs, which make excellent door-stops, and small water-craft anchors.

Giancarlo recommended this gaming computer

What specs do you want? How much ram? Intel chip or AMD? How big a hard drive?
Whats the most you want to spend?

Thanks very much M10000. I am not sure what to go for as far as Intel or AMD. Thanks everyone for all the advice and links! I am not sure how much I am willing to spend. I think I am ready to blast the wallet. I am just not sure yet. Thank you all for you input and advice:-).

If you aren't going to build your own desktop computer then just buy a package from dell or similar, they are all going to be just as good or bad as the others based off the specs they have.

Besides, dell usually has reliable shipping, support and decent prices here.

Get the printer/fax/multibusinessjibberjabberjoo from a local store.

@Giancarlo

- Shut up. Im right, Youre wrong.

Let the guy ask about his computer

I would suggest:
HP
4 GB Ram
1 TB
Intel CPU
and no amped up graphics card (since you didnt mention wanting a gaming computer)

lol

I got all of that on my 2007 emachines. of course i had to upgrade broken parts but still, why buy something so weak?

Just on the US dell now. What are you willing to spend?

For US $1598.98 you can get;
-Dell XPS8300 (core i7, 3.4ghz/1TB drive/64bit windows 7/basic AMD video card)
Upgraded with;
16GB DDR3 ram
22 inch widescreen HD screen
Colour laser printer with inbuilt fax functions

and all your various ancillary products and components like speakers, keyboard, MS office etc.

And obviously you could go a LOT cheaper, but its personal preference.

I am currently running the following which I built probably 5-6 years ago, still powering along well for day to day use though a bit weak for gaming or anything like that;

Intel core 2 E7400 (2.8ghz)
2gb ram
Hitachi disk drive, I think it is a 500gb, I don't even use 25% of it.
NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT
20" widescreen HD monitor

That cost me roughly $700 back then, with PSU/keyboard/etc however I did have to buy windows XP and MS office.
Can't remember what motherboard I am using.

^ you bring up an excellent point.

I know ThreeCrows isn't keen on building his own computer, but a lot of money can be saved by trolling ebay for used parts and throwing them together (mb, cpu, ram, buy hard drives new). My desktop, like yours, is about 6 years-old. It started as a Pentium D 2.x with 1GB RAM. Over the years I've put the fastest processor the chipset will use, and the most RAM. Sure it's only 4GB but I don't need more.

I've been toying with building a new i5 or i7 box, but I just don't need it.

^ well, it has worked for me - I've yet to have any problems. I usually have some parts laying around so sometimes it's a matter of getting a CPU and RAM to go with a motherboard, or a motherboard to go with CPU and RAM.

It was especially beneficial when I needed RAM for my server. Instead of paying $3000 for RAM, I found used parts for about $1500.

I don't, however, buy used HBAs or hard drives.
