The New Jersey Constitution requires the state to “provide for the maintenance and support of a thorough and efficient system of free public schools for the instruction of all the children in the State between the ages of five and eighteen years.” Yet, because the state failed to meet this obligation in many of its poorest school districts, the state Supreme Court ordered New Jersey to stop underfunding those districts more than 20 years ago. In 2009, the court finally determined that the state had complied with its decades-old order, and ended much of its oversight of the state’s education funding. Sadly, Gov. Chris Christie (R) almost immediately took this as a license to slash education funding for the poor.

Yesterday, however, the justices reminded Christie that he is not allowed to thumb his nose at the state constitution, and it ordered the state to restore $500 million that had been stripped from the state’s most needy districts. As the court’s official summary of the opinion explains:

My spin: Christie is a nasty, vicious opportunist.

Education cuts are happening all over the country - and Christie is ahead of it

Education is about students not teachers

Not lifetime jobs/protection for teachers

Not about pensions and other benefits that far exceed public ones and eliminate the ability to be fiscally sound

Well, the cuts will most likely come from aid that the state gives to towns and cities. So....enjoy the schools who will be awash in cash while continuing their abysmal record of actually educating students. Of course to finance the supreme court's extortion, you'll have less garbage collection, road work done and fire and police protection.

My Spin: Christie is trying to fix the system, vice just keep passing it on to the next generation of citizens/leaders. Property taxes in NJ are outrageous, worst in the country. Something has to give.
 
While at think progress I saw 2 stories.
One about Christie was going to go against the Court and not pay the schools.
The other one was about Cheney saying he worshiped the ground that Ryan walks on. ( I may have mentioned that in another thread) But when I went back to Think.... they were gone. Dammit.

Ever been to Jersey? How about its schools? No? Well then you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

My grandmother taught in the public schools in New Jersey for her entire adult life; they went from okay to complete shit. This ruling isn't going to a damn thing to fix any of the problems. Christie's actions might not have been the right one, but the court's certainly IS the wrong one. Dumping money into failing schools, especially when there isn't any money to begin with, is a fantastic way to make sure that 1) You lose a lot of money, and 2) Don't fix the problems.

Are any problems solved by punishing the teachers? How about the teachers' families. Do they deserve to be punished? From where I sit, the problem with education is that the funding comes from property taxes. This has to change, but nobody seems to know how to affect this change.

I haven't been to Jersey, but I feel that I have a rudimentary grasp on the problem with education nationwide. It's way too complicated for this or any other forum.

Since when have you been concerned about cops or other "greedy union" workers at the local level? You lamented and decried their golden parachute, so why do you care?

It doesn't have anything to do with the teachers. But I'm not surprised you're resorting to flawed, emotion-based arguments instead of debating what's really the issue here.

Compare and contrast: New Trier H.S. - DuSable H.S.
New Trier is far better although there is genuine interest in pursuing excellence at DuSable. The difference? New Trier Township has higher property taxes. Not that I'm hot shit or anything, but I learned how to type in J.H. when I was twelve. This was partially the result of "throwing money" at the business department. Not every J.H. in the area could have afforded two classrooms of 30 typewriters each. I'm not sure what is either flawed or emotion-based here. It's simply a matter of dollars and cents (sense?).

It's because I like my garbage picked up and my roads without craters. The money the state will be pissing down these ratholes will not increase test scores at all. It's another sop to the NJEA. More adminsitrators who don't teach a damned thing. Just what we needed!

The supreme court needs to be reformed.

Bingo! The court ruled, and I certainly agree, that there was a disparity in education caused by the reliance on property taxes. So, they forced the legislature in 1976 to adopt an income tax. Now the problem with liberals, is they hate to end any tax scheme. So the income tax didn't actually replace the property tax, but supplanted it. It was sold as "Property tax relief."

The other major problem with this state, is that there is no such thing as a dedicated fund. Every dime the state gets, goes into one big pot called the general fund. From there it gets pissed away on everything the state does.

Income tax rates went from 2% in 1976 to over 10% recently. All the while property taxes continued to grow exponentially to where we now have the highest in the nation at over $7000 on average. Fully 2/3 of that in most towns, goes to school taxes. We get to vote on school budgets and even when they get voted down, the school districts appeal to the town council, or the state and they usually get their way instead of going back to the people. Not to mention the fact that we have over 600 school districts in one of the smallest states in the country. Each one has a superintendent that makes over $100K per year and the requisite toady helpers at similar amounts. So, it's also very top heavy.

It's quite the cluster-fuck. If there was a prime example of how not to run a school system ours would be it!

Attempting to bring the families of teachers into the argument, which is irrelevant.

What you're describing has nothing whatsoever to do with the issues in New Jersey. They are problems, to be sure, but they are not the main factor here.
