New Jersey

But gas prices are much lower than here in NY, and you don't have to get out of your car

"Blocks" is the preferred unit of measurement when getting directions to places. It is illegal for woman to walk out in public without big hair. Jon Bon Jovi is the patron saint.

everything i know about the USA comes from the simpsons and futurama

Yes remember we had a gay governor (Jim McGreevey)

The "New Jersey is dirty" joke is just a myth. The only dirty parts of New Jersey are the parts that are near New York City. Their filth spills over onto our land and gives us a bad reputation. :(
As someone who lives in NJ and has driven down the turnpike plenty of times, I have to disagree ;)

Ah, "The Garden State" - so named because it smells like fertilizer.

SERIOUSLY - It's a nice state, although not without it's problems. It's got the shore, boardwalks, culture, scenic beauty, and history. It also has some of the bad things that have been brought up in some of the other posts. (You won't find another state without good and bad parts, either.) Depending in where you are, you have New York and/or Philadelphia within reach if you want a big city. And there's Atlantic City for those who like to gamble or see cheesy big-name lounge acts.

On the whole - it's not as bad as the comedic reputation it has.

Ok, I will clarify, there is an industrial section in Norther NJ that does have a foul odor. It is probably the only part of NJ like that. All states have an industrial section, NJ's just happens to be in a widely traveled area and that's what many people think of NJ.

Those of us in New Jersey know how much more interesting and great things about the state well outweigh the negative reputation. We will get a positive notice soon when we adopt a civil unions law that will equate all the rights and privileges of marriage. As well,we will not fall under the divisive spell of those who want to permanently banning the possibility of gay marriage with a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and a woman. They have no chance to get it through our legislature, because even those who currently favor civil unions realize that such an amendment will only be used to promote division and bigotry.

Thank you guys for your intersting news and pieces of information about NJ!

Be prepared to pay tolls. NJ has a ton of them.

Plus you'll start talking with a New Jersey accent. Now, isn't that thrilling??!!

lol.. and what would you mean by "New Jersey" accent?

I've lived in New Jersey all my life.. & I have never heard someone say "Joy-zee" or talk like that... We all pretty much have standard "newscaster" accents...

If that's what you mean by accents then...sure.. i guess it is "thrilling" as you put it..

Hmm.. Sure you aren't thinking of Staten Island?

I beg to differ. I NEVER thought I had an accent. After I moved to NY, people always said to me, "Are you from NJ, you got the accent." There are differences, especially from North Jersey to South Jersey.

So who at work did you piss off to get the transfer?

In the US Military it is well known that a transfer to Alaska or McMurdo follows any "misbehaving".
