Okay, so I was originally going to make this topic about acts who were not going to be around in a year, but that list may be too long. What current acts, who are new, do you feel have staying power?

As with all artists, if you release shit, you will fade into oblivion. I think a perfect example of this is "The Killers". Hot Fuss was great stuff. Sam's Town was okay. Day & Age is pure crap. You just won't know until they all release their second album. Hoping that Kate Perry and Lady Ga Ga come up with a good second CD though.
1) Music is subjective. Therefore, what you consider "shit," someone else may consider a masterpiece.
2) Many people have experienced a sophmore slump or a junior jam. That's not necessarily an indicator either.
3) The current marketplace is about hits as opposed to artistry. It's always been about hits, but it's definitely obvious in today's music business. For example, there are several artists whose albums are weak overall, but they could produce strong singles to keep them on the label.
4) Ultimately, it's about marketing, promotion, the artist, and timing. If a person is given the correct image, or makeover, with enough industry pull and he or she releases strong singles at the proper time, he or she can last. In addition, there are some artists who can go through a "do no wrong" period; even if they released horrible songs, as you say, their fans will support their music regardless.
If Lady Gaga learns to sing live - in tune. Then I'll jump on the bandwagon.
It seems as if she only has trouble when she attempts to sing and dance; that's where the pitchfest occurs. Otherwise, she's fine.
Kudos to her for doing it. None of the bigger acts will even attempt to sing live and dance at the same time.

Why would she even attempt to dance and sing at the same time?
Wouldn't it be better if she just focused on singing?
I don't think there is one - Taylor Swift probably, but that's because she is a genre of her own. She's definitely NOT country and she's not only 'pop' so she's different. Not particularly credible though.
Uhh, she's not new. She's been out since 2006 and was big at country before she crossed over. So I wouldn't consider her 'new'. And if you don't consider her writing her own lyrics, singing and playing her own music as credible, then eh, I don't exactly feel you're credible at a valid opinion on this subject.
I hope Lady GaGa can crank out another stellar album, that would be great, so I'd say she and Katy Perry are at the top of this list. Also, I wouldn't mind another Duffy and Adele record. I also hope Flo Rida is still around, and Leona Lewis will probably have a few more hits.
She's new to me, I hadn't heard of her until 'Love Story' rose up the UK charts.
And fair enough. You don't think much of my opinion but then, I don't think much of yours either.
