I'm torn between getting a Motorola Droid 4 (the one with the slide keyboard) or the Samsung Galaxy s3. Money isn't a real object but those are the choices I want to have for a new phone. Any thoughts on either?

Edit: Currently have a Droid 2.

What carrier?

I've noted that ICS is due for the Droid 4... however; Verizon has kyboshed taking Droid 3s and 4s to ICS.

Or, perhaps you'll pursue Cyanogen!?!

I'm partial to physical keyboard devices myself. The Droid 4 is a want on my list.

The SIII is a nice unit as well.

I'm used to typing on an actual keypad but at the same token I have gotten used to the horrible clunkiness that is the ipad. I guess this may have to be one of those things I go to the Verizon store and check out said phones.

Agreed. Hands-on is best.

Also; apparently Android JellyBean (4.1) will offer notable performance improvements. Yet another piece of info you might want to apply to your potential choices.

Of course, do buy what you can afford, when you can afford it. It's very difficult to buy into the future of technology.

I agree. A physical keyboard is so much better (and faster) than those stupid virtual things, I will never again buy a phone without a real keyboard.

I would go with the Droid 4.

For the love of God don't buy a Droid 4, especially if the SIII is the alternative. Here's why:

-Better camera on SIII by a country mile
-Samsung will support the SIII for much longer than the Droid 4, and its hardware is pretty well future-proofed.
-Better battery life on the SIII, thanks to the integrated LTE baseband.
-Better screen on the SIII
-Unique software features on the SIII
-Infinitely better processor.

The only thing the Droid 4 has on the SIII is the keyboard, but with a 4.8 inch screen the virtual keyboard on the SIII will be more than enough.

I can't comment on the other issues, but a slide-out keyboard is hard to beat.

The Droid 4 has a 4.3 inch display with a screen resolution of 940 x 540.

The Samsung S3 has a 4.8 inch display with a screen resolution of 1280 x 720.

Virtual keyboards almost always occupy half of the available screen real estate. That means that when the Samsung S3 has the virtual keyboard displayed, the available screen resolution is only 1280 x 360 (or 640 x 720), either of which is 460,800 pixels. Because the Droid has the slide-out keyboard, however, its resolution remains 940 x 540 when you are using the keyboard, which is 507,600 pixels. That means that the Droid 4's screen is 10% bigger than the Samsung S3's when you are using the keyboard. Add to that the remarkable speed of the Droid's mechanical keyboard over the Samsung's virtual keyboard, and the Droid 4 wins by a country mile for texting or internet use.

Of course, this assumes you will use the phone for internet surfing and texting, which perhaps you will not. But is that not the primary reason for buying a smartphone in the first place?

Ehh, something tells me you haven't used a modern touchscreen-only phone recently. The android keyboard (and iPhone even more so) have very sophisticated autocorrect features that more than make up for the lack of a physical keyboard.

Also, the Droid 4's screen is only 4 inches. The open keyboard on the S3 occupies only about a third of the screen when open. The argument about screen resolution is a non-starter; The Droid 4 must be in landscape when you enter text in either mode, which significantly shortens the amount of visible information. In fact, when in landscape mode, the available information on the screen is comparable between the two. Further, the way android works, when you are entering URLS or other information, the screen is overlaid with an address bar or something similar. In texts, especially in landscape mode, the only visible information is the message you are entering, regardless of if the keyboard is physical. Since that orientation is the only one possible for the Droid 4, you actually see LESS information. Or in other words, the Droid 4 does not in any way, shape, or form, show more information due to its physical keyboard.

^ the autocorrect feature is sometimes rather annoying in the iPhone especially if you're writing a word it doesn't recognise. The virtual keyboard does take up almost half the screen, but the text size in the message remains the same, even if the area of text displayed is reduced.

I decided to get the Samsung Galaxy sIII. I'm liking it so far. The swype feature works most of the time but any letters near the backspace key (usually m or l) and I have to type out the words and any words with two letters back-to-back is annoying too. Still love the camera and the 4G LTE. It doesn't feel like dial up like with 3G.

Good choice. The S3 is a beast.

It's funny. One of my friends was trying to upsize me with her iphone4s but the galaxy sIII is just better at everything. Even the flashlight builtin blinded her lmao!

I think a 6-year old has better handwriting than that.. I thought my DS stylus would work on it but it doesn't. Guess I need a "special" one for it. Course the phone came with headphones which I already have two decent pairs of so facepalm to that.

Good choice. S3 hands down. My housemate has one and she just can't stop using her phone. She borrows me to use sometimes and I really love it too :-)
