So xmas is coming and I have to find the perfect shaver for me to ask for. But really, how can you know what is good until you've tried it?

So anyway, I'm looking for a shaver meeting these guidelines:
-must be a foil shaver (i hate these 3 circle ones!)
-shaving hurts every time for me. I DREAD it, so I'm looking for something that causes as little irritation or pain as possible. Closeness of the shave isn't as important as ease for me. I can only shave every 4 days at the most frequent, so...
-the shaver should be good at cutting stubble that is a little long.

I guess that's all. I'm not sure about wet shavers, if they're any good.

So please, add a post about your shaver! If it's great or if it's lousy it will help me to know or help other people shopping too.

Shopping season is coming up, I think it's a great idea to do a bunch of consumer reports threads. A site like this has got to be great for that!

Thanks!

EDIT: this is for Face shaving, in case there was any confusion

I somehow can guess what kind of image RationalLunacy will post in this thread.

Have you ever considered permanant hair removal as an option?

I hear they do wondeful things with lazers these days.

well, I'm new so I don't know who that is or get that joke. I'll just have to wait and see.

Can we keep it about the topic please?

Thanks.

erm.. I won't be choosing based on websites!

I agree about the pulsonic being a gimmick. I've seen other sites brag about low vibration in their rasor to cause less irritation! I'm glad they came out with it though because the other models should decrease in price.

Yeah, I use the beard trimmer first and then the foil part after, but my shaver is very very old. Using a lotion with an electric dry shaver sounds iffy. Although I could get a Panasonic shaver that is wet and dry and use anything with it. hrm.

It may not be the best, but it's certainly appropriate. (Take a peek. It's only 32 seconds long. :-) )

I have the Braun 360 and I love it. I've had it 14 months, and haven't had to replace the blades or foil yet. I highly recommend it.

I've heard the Braun 360 is very good and that it has a close shave. My question: Does "close shave" = more discomfort? If so, I'll be looking for a "far shave" model.

I read somewhere else that the Panasonic 7505 was very loud and messy, whereas the 8228 (new, top of the line) is GREAT. And it also runs at the same speed no matter how charged it is. Sounds like a good thing. I'd prefer to not get top-of-the-line though.

sean, what model is it?

I think I'm leaning towards a Panasonic shaver now.

Panasonics are wet/dry shavers, and can be cleaned with soap and water if you don't want to use the cleaning solution up (and the cleaning solution isn't alcohol based, so it won't dry). They also have faster motors making the blades move faster. I emailed Panasonic about what the difference is between all of their models, but I haven't gotten any info yet.

Does anyone have anything to say about them? especially irritation?

I'm on my third Braun, and I've been quite pleased with them.

They work quite well, even if you don't "rigorously" clean them out. I just dump what collects under the foil after each shave, and brush it out every few days.

They seem to go for the comfortable, not too close shave, something you're looking for. Anything from the Braun line should do nicely.

I use a staight blade, very effective, but you have to be careful, you "Nick" yourself, you could be dead.

Electric razers are crap.

Get a safety razer, use soap as lube in the shower, seriously, don't waste money on shaving cream, it is not nessecary, and you will be amazed. Once you have mastered the safety razer, up grade to a straight razer, your face will be baby soft and you will look great.

uh no. blades are a bloody mess for me. I don't cut myself but my skin feels like it's on fire, and i get ingrown hairs after using a blade, and what happens next time I shave those bumps with a blade? they slice off and there's more blood. Not to mention blades (1 blade, 5 blades) hurt like hell on my face!

I think I'm going to go with either the Panasonic ES7058S or ES8109S. The difference being a faster motor, convex blades and about $60. Yeah, I should probly ask for the cheaper one.

I'll join the line of those praising Braun. Mine does a great job, doesn't need frequent cleaning, and didn't cost much.

You are probably buying shaving cream when you have tried the razor.

Shaving cream is mostly air and scent.

Try soap. Plain old soap, will give lots of lube, will make your blade glide over your skin, even over any "bumps" You only get "razer burn" if you don't lube up, shaving cream, most of them, are crap.

Electric shavers do not get down and really shave, they skim over the skin and yes, you can get "razer burn" from an electric razer.

Again, plain soap, soap up your face, in the shower, start with a safety razer, then upgrade to a high quality straight razer.

Like anal sex, if I can be so bold to make the analigy. The lube is the trick.

But, I guess I am an old fart... do as you wish.

If shaving with an electric shaver hurts, use some shave talc. It works wonders. Will make an old shaver work like new.

Hi Blake.

I havent been able to ever find an electric razer that works for me. It is a dream that I dont have to fuss with a blade but that is the only thing that works for me.

Do you have a small appliance store near you? There was one in San Francisco that allowed you to use them at the store before you bought one.

Hope that helps a little - probably NOT.

later,
frank

I have decided on one. I called around and read and read. god there are so many Panasonic model numbers, and the employees know absolutely nothing. They're the same employees that help you with panasonic DVD recorders! They eventually just say "no, our shavers don't do that" or "they are all the same", just to get out of the call.

I'm going with the ES8109S shaver with cleaning station. I'm sure it works just as well to suspend it in a cup of soapy water (or even cleaning cartridge fluid), but it was a good deal. $99 bucks for the very nice shaver, cleaner, and a mirror for shower shaving at jr.com. It's one of the newer ones with the superfast motor and convex blades.

I'm hoping either the new model (my old one is like 7 years old), as well as the wet shave capabilities will make it easier to shave without tears.
