My 10 yr old Dell that was hot shit in its day is about to die...
This one is almost 4 yrs old, about 20/6/360 for use and has
been put away wet (used heavily) often. Roomie wants to
trash the 10 yr old (even the memory card slots are full.

Move this to that office and let me find a new one. Okay, Okay
I still hardly use my kindle (no, they won't let me move to the fire)
and my tablet is still a virgin. Not relevant to this discussion.

A Dell XPS-One 27 (all in one) w/ 2TB HD, 8GB Mem (can do 16
w/o add-on...what ever that means))HD is solid state wW bluray,
has Skype?? too. 27" hd quad? screen. The whole delux pkg for
$2000.00 Any of you techie types know anything about this
particular one or something else in the price range that would be
better?

I'm not in it for business so can't imagine needing 2Tb of hard drive..
*mb of mem maybe a bit chintzy??

I dunno. 'splain to lame brain lefty in simple street words. THX,
(I guess this price is $400 less than norm...I dunno, it is an e-deal..

The 2TB hard disk sounds wonderful. Do you by any chance take lots of photos and videos? The space would be great for storing such things. It soon goes, as high resolution images eats space up mercilessly.

Thanks for responding buddy. we lost a good Mod
when you came to your senses.

As for the rest of you...the issue is moot.
I bought it today

Thx ay?

No,
But I still can...

Might as well do it now and never have to worry right?
Butt, Isn't that an awful lot of mem? My next chore is
how to transfer my hd to the new 'puter and erase the
old one. May have to have Nerds out again. My 'guru"
friend is out of country for 3 mos...teaching MAC. He is
an Apple Corp World Trainer whore.
He gonna kill me when he finds out I went Dell again.

It's not a major issue. 8GB should be plenty moving forward. You're call on the $200 upgrade.

Your best bet for transferring data is either via wired networking, or an external hard drive.

Another option would be putting the old hard-drive into an external case. This is a convenient way of having your old data available to you. It does, however, require purchasing a new hard drive for the older PC.

Lefty,
Didn't your new unit come with a transfer software package and puter to puter usb patch cable?
Dell usually makes those available - I'm sure your Geek Squad could get you set up so you could do the transfer w/out having to do too much, network-wise.

Although, if you have a router w/ typical 4 RJ45 ("big phone plug") slots, burke67 is right - you could transfer that way - BUT, if you make your computer drives visible/accessible to the net, would roomie possibly be able to see the files?

That would be my only caution about using network vs. pc to pc transfer USB cord. (NOT the same as a regular USB cable - wires flip so they pair properly on each machine.)

Donnie, can you put that into English so when I pick up my change of like to,
I can tell the Geeks in Best Buys back room (or an associate)

I will probably get a printer too. They have an HP Photosmart 5514 Net
work ready Wirelwess e-All in One printer for like only $90.00. Wi-fi
prints, scans, copies....will even do e-mail prints from dif location.

now if I could just by a boy to splain to old 'Rotary Dial Lefty what the fuck
has and how to use it. Unlike a penis, this just and USEitto Learn it anymore.

Our friend Burke was right about the mem upg. Why waste $200.00 to the
factory? Like the boys at BestBuy said, you'll never need it...butt, if you do...
60 bucks.

Also, my tablet and this new toy will be upg to W8 when it comes out this fall.
Possibly a svc chg of 10-15 dollars. Maybe they've sucked me in but I'm
a Best Buys Boy now. No more lowrent high hidden price commission sales
idiots that 1/2 the time tell you what you want to hear or don't even know.

Leftykins,
I was about as in English as I could be - you may not understand it, but your Geek Squad will.
Also, see the back channel for the links on the transfer software and stuff.

Including the W8 info.

Will study it up later.

Thamk You for the work.
