The countdown is on boys. 14 days till I live my dream of going to NYC!. Me and my bf are heading there for 6 days.....Ive been wanting to go there since I was just a young gay pup!

Any advice on what is not to be missed that may not be on our list of things to do already?

Cheers!

Dude, I'm so gonna be home in the good ole city at that time. It's right before classes start. Um... I'm too tired to think of random things for you to see now but I'll think of something later and let you know. Don't worry, my list won't be the usual touristy crap. Sure, a bit of it is worth a visit but it's not real NY.

You'll have a blast in any case.;)

Go on the Staten Island Ferry, it's a beautiful view of lower NYC and the Statue. Go to the top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center 50th and 5th.
Check out Chelsea, where the boys are hangin these days. There will be bars and restaurants galore.
Empire State Building 35th and 5th.
St. Patricks Cathedral 51st and 5th.
The largest gothic cathedral in the WORLD is St. John the Divine, 110th and Amsterdam. Even if you're not into churches I would at least take a quick walk through these places, they are incredible.

If you need more, let me know. You are going to have a BLAST!

Lincoln Center

The Metroplitan Museum of Art

MOMA (The Museum of Modern Art- recently reconstructed)

See a Broadway show

Look at the list of possibilities on line,
and choose only a few that most interest you. Be prepared to spend a lot of money for housing and food as well as entertainment.
Finally I hope you are planning to use public transit, for taking a car into the city is nothing short of insane.

I agree with FPNY about St. John The Unfinished (they're still building it). Largest rose window in the Western Hemisphere.

josher has good ideas too, but don't miss the American Museum of Natural History.

Pretend you're going to the Statue of Liberty, then don't. It's a long line, a huge pain, and a dangerous place to be. Not worth it at all. Instead, hang out in the park. There's a wonderful memorial there to servicemen who died at sea. It's a monumental gesture, and it's covered with names.

Unfortunately you can't go to the Intrepid museum. That's closed until 2008, but it's one of my favorites.

Play on the rocks in Central Park.

For boy watching, walk along the piers if it's sunny. (Not to detract from Chelsea in any way.)

Don't skip Washington Square Park either. Watch your wallet while you're there, but if you're in luck you can see some amazing things. If you use the restroom there, bring a clothespin for your nose!

You guys are awesome in your responses. I know Im going to have an amazing time. And yea, we are flying and not driving....Plus the hotel room is already booked and paid for (!)

Cheers!

The museums are the biggest draw for me in NY, but I also like the art galleries in Soho. Check out eGullet.org for restaurant suggestions - there are a lot of bad restaurants in NY, and there is no reason you have to go to them. Unfortunately, I've been given quite a few bum steers for restaurants in NY, and so be careful about restaurant advice. I had great Lebanese food at the hotel coffee shop in one hotel I where I stayed in Midtown, but I got lucky with that one.

The museaums are great, but they are time consuming. If the weather is bad by all means, go. If the weather is beautiful, which it has been for the last few weeks then spend your time outside wandering around. I would also think of taking one of those double decker tour busses around. You can get on and off whereever you like and it's a great way to see things you wouldn't ordinarilly (sp?) get to see. How the hell do you spell ordinarilly anyway?

Thanks for the restaurant links, guys.....there are so many to choose from that I think I will spend some time on eGullet.org as suggested by LarsVenice.

I think that we have opted to take the buses and subways for most of our sightseeing (we have a cute little pocket map that we have marked with the things we may want to see). We want to really get the New York experience. We are going to take the Staten Island Ferry one day and we have decided to do the Grey Line 2 hour harbor lights tour on a boat around Manhattan.

At night, I guess we will plan where we are going and then figure our our transportation then. Im not sure I want to be in the Subway after 11:00 pm. Chances are high though, that our nights will be spent in Chelsea and Greenwich Villiage......where ever the best "gay friendly" area is......

Im sooooo looking forward to this trip I cant even begin to explain. 12 days to go!!

Cheers!

If you want to see a really cool restaurant in New York, there is always the McDonald's where you have a doorman, a piano player and service at your tables. Sadly I dont remember the location.

Whatever you do, just please don't eat anywhere that you have in your home town. Nothing bothers me more than when I see people travel hundreds of miles and spend hundreds of dollars to come to New York and eat at Olive Garden!

You can also check out chowhound.com for restaurant info. If you register (it's free) you can ask questions on the Manhattan board as to the type of restaurant you want and what neighborhood you would like it to be in and people will answer. It can be used for Canada and other places, too.

Can anyone who knows New York recommend a good bar/club to go to on Friday and Saturday? We are looking for a gay bar with a mixed crowd of young and "older" (21 to 40). We are looking for a decent place to have a couple drinks and maybe dance.......

There just seems to be so many to choose and sift through on our internet searches and its hard to determine where to go.

Cheers and Thanks!!

CENTRAL PARK!!

Not at night, but any time during the day. Take a long walk through the park, look at all the funny people doing funny things. Roller skating. Tai-chi. Folk dancing. Especially on the weekends, there's plenty to see.

Go to Madison Square Park (23rd and Broadway) and stand in line for a delicious hamburger and a great shake at the ShakeShack.

Don't go in Central Park at night.
