New York Mets 2008

Just got back from day game

3-1 mets

oliver perez was amazing - 12Ks

he owned utley/howard - 3x each

carlos d with an opposite field (yep) double to drive in 2 in the 8th

billy wags with the save

jaime moyer was terrific for phils - 2 hits/1 run - lucky he's such an old MOFO they had to take him out after 7 - mets couldn't touch him

rollins did not start - crazy

that nightmare loss on tues is a distant memory

kudos to manuel for keeping them on track

lets go mets

Ya got it all covered my man,
just lemme add a few thoughts to that

After that mess on Tuesday the boys recovered and sent those Phillies packin.

Perez was awesome, Striking out all those lefties Charlie Manuel thought would dominate Ollie, well think again sucker. Perez has really found his groove, the windup, position on the mound and confidence is working well for him.
The Mets are now 9-12 this season against the Phillies.
Delgado remains red hot and I love him in the cleanup position, he is seeing the ball well, and has earned that spot and taking great advantage of it.

Phillies manager Charlie manual pulled bad boy Jimmy Rollins from the game cause Jimmy was late getting to the park, Manuel is an idiot, he takes Rollins out for that?? Yeah I know discipline is important and Jimmy’s lame excuse of too many traffic lights was lame, but come on, taking him out of an important game like that one?, pretty dumb. Then to add to the fun, with the Phillies down 3-1 in the 9th, Charlie puts Jimmy in the game to pinch hit. So Wagner thought, OH YEAH, and made him hit a ground ball into a fielder's choice. GAME OVER.

So now with Pedro out to attend his dads funeral, who will pitch on Saturday?
The Mets will bring up a minor leaguer to fill the spot in the rotation till Pedro is back.
They have some good options; I like Ruddy Lugo or Brian Stokes, no Figueroa this time. But I think the most probable is that it will be Brandon Knight who has been lights out in AAA. We will find out today, I really want to see Knight pitch in New York. Whenever an AAA player comes up to play here it just a certain excitement to the game for me. I just wanna see them succeed, gets my juices going.

Oh, and by the way, the Mets magic number is now 60 ;)

i hope jamie moyer is the one that puts the mets away :D

THe oldest pitcher in MLB?
I don't think so :p

The Phillies are not the team they were last year thats for sure.
They got scalped by the Braves yesterday and there is dissension going on in that clubhouse.
I am not worried about them anymore.
They go to Washington next week, and if the pathetic Nats beat em I am gonna laugh my ass off.

Now back to the more important team in the NL East.

Pelfrey was brilliant again last night sending the cards packin
(Abs come out from under that bed)
Of course it wasn't even a fair fight with Boggs on the mound, the Mets love to beat up on him.
By the way, last nights game was the 5th in a row where the starting pitcher went into the 7th inning. That has not happened in a long while.
I am looking forward to watching Brandon Knight pitch tonight, hopefully another star will be born.
We will only see him once, cause with the day off next week we don't need a 5th starter and Pedro will be back after that. Besides, Knight is off to China next week to pitch in the olympics.
I gotta tell ya I was freakin out when Sanchez loaded up the bags last night,
I went, are you kiddin me, not again.#-o When the inning started I yelled out to Manuel, "you better keep him on a short leash" Damn that was brutal.
Other than that,Great game.

I was out late last night so I did not see the game live. I watched the first 6 innings later cause I wanted to watch Knight pitch.
Ok so in the first inning he got roughed up pretty good, throwin everything high.
Inning 2 was a little better, but hit two batters, and 3-4-5 were much better showing a good fast ball and breaking ball. Maybe he was too pumped up in the first. Also 100 pitches in just 5 innings is a concern.
Question for the Mets now is, do they hang on to him maybe put him in the pen or let him go to China to represent USA in the Olympics; the Mets can make that call.
From what I have read about him at AAA and what I saw in the later innings I would say keep him in the pen. Sanchez is a mess and the rest have been unstable again.

I wish I had seen the whole game cause it looked like a great one. Delgado was smoking again, he has totally turned the corner and he ain’t going back. He is seeing the ball better, taking pitches and not swinging at bad ones allowing him to keep ahead of the count.

So the cards take the second game and they deserved it. They played hard, although we pretty much gave them the first four runs. The big hit of the night was of course Pujols who hit the knockout punch to win the game. How fitting for him to do that considering the slump he was in the first game and most of the second. Plus the Mets fans were beating him up with boos every time he came up to bat (along with a lot of the Cards players) NOT COOL! So good job Albert

Well today will be a great game as well with Santana on the mound for the Mets and the always dangerous Kyle Lohse going for the Cards. Although the last time Lohse faced the Mets it was not pretty for him.

I have enjoyed watching the Cards, they are basically a good team, I totally get why Abs is so into them. They maybe a little heavy in pitchers and light on the bench. Plus, like the Mets, their pen has been inconsistent.

Congrats to Jose Reyes who got married on Friday, he married the girl he has been living with for many years. They have two kids.

The trade deadline is looming and I am still hoping the Mets leave things just the way they are. Of course we still don’t know what will happen with Church, he seems to be doing well and will play in rehab games this week. He would be the only reason I could se the Mets making any deals, with him healthy I say it aint broke so don’t fix it. I have been hearing talk about interest in Raul Ibanez and Casey Blake. I also heard Jason Bay but that ain’t gonna happen now that the Pirates have traded Nady.

watched some of the mets today at the gym

santana CG victory 9-1; not sure why he kept him in frankly - maybe as a way of appeasing the fans

Wright solo HR, Tatis (again) 2R bomb, Castro

17 hits - wow

everyone had a hit - or more - even santana who had 2

6 hitter with 5ks for johan who seems to be finding his stride - and getting run support (always nice)

tatis shows no signs of letting up and is saying to the mets mgmt - don't be overpaying for another OF - im right here

love that some of the lesser knowns are doing it - tatis, castro, easley

love that

my head says the mets still gotta get another bat (OF) - sorry fernando

and maybe another middle relief pitcher

i dig the way this is going

i was happy the Mets battled last night, but they deserved to lose....they were horrendous in the clutch, only something like 1-16 with runner on second. The Mets just couldn't keep Pujols contained for long, and the great hitter he is responded.I am such a fan of Skip Schumaker and Aaron Miles in both the way they play, and God they are hot little scrappers! And that kid Mc Clellan really took the wind out of the Mets sails when he struck out Wright,Delgado and Beltran on some of the nastiest, most unhittable curves ever!it was described by one of the Mets broadcasters as"Wainwright-like" and when it loked like the Mets could break the game open he just shut them down. This guy could be REALLY good!:D

I was happy in a way the Cards won a game, don't like to see Abs down on his club and they earned the win.I still hope the Cards find their way into the playoffs,as Beltran/Wainwright and Molina/Heilman must be avenged!;)

Couldn't see the Santana complete game win but as so often there was a number of terrific clutch contributions from the key guys like Wright,Beltran and Delgado and the super reserve unit including Fernando Tatis(what a great story) and Ramon Castro.A bad loss now is just simply that, the Mets focus and regroup and get back to winning now.I don't really know if they have to do anything before the trade deadline, but I'm sure they'll see what's available and if it makes sense to help them get to the playoffs they'll make the right move.

Great comments Sausy and Chance 1

It sure was an exciting series with the Cards. The Mets were on fire doing just about everything right. OK so the bull pen slipped a little but still some great baseball.
Santana was the Santana we signed on to see, top of his game. Chance, you mentioned his going the full game, I think it is what we expect from him. Many have said, and he may now prove to be, a second half pitcher who has traditionally done better in the second half. If yesterday is any indication of what we can expect from him now, well that would be great timing for us. His complete game was coupled with a low pitch count and that’s important as well. He also had two hits and an RBI and didn’t miss a home run by much, wish he would have run on that hit he shoulda made it to second easily, oh well he’s a pitcher. ;)

Looks like Knight won’t be staying around; the Mets have designated him for assignment. They also brought up relief pitcher Willie Kollazo, I think that was cause the pen was totally used up on Saturday and they wanted him here in case Santana crapped out early. But that did not happen. The pen got used up pretty bad on Saturday, I think Wagner pitched two, Hellman went Three and Smith pitched two and a third for the series. I was hoping to see Pelfrey come in as long man, he told Manuel he is always up for that.

Beltran continues to be smoking hot. Odd how the Cards pitchers handled him, I mean when will they, and every other teams pitchers, learn you never pitch Carlos a breaking ball on two strikes? Because when you do, say goodbye, and Sayonara, because that ball is leaving the park. Shhhhh don’t tell em.
Did you guys see that play with Pujols and Chavez? I dono if Albert tagged him, it kinda looked like maybe he did, but it Endy was called safe, I look at it as small payback for that homer on Saturday, very small but I’ll take it.
Saucy, you mentioned the Mets cluch hitting I was agravated by that as well especilally since they have been doing that in spades lately. The Cards clearly deserved that win.

So now it’s on to Florida and those pesky Marlins. I dono how those guys have been able to win so many games. After the Mets game yesterday I switched over to watch the last half of the Marlins/Cubs game. The Marlins can hit the ball and manage a good number of homers but that’s all they have. I have never seen such sloppy defense; I mean those guys are like little girls out there. Watching them run the bases is pathetic as well. The pitching is not bad but not all that great, lousy pen and the starters do not go very deep.
So how are they still bussin around first place? You gotta give them credit though; they somehow manage to win ball games and just won’t go away. And you have to respect that. ;)

Nice homestand last week, 2 out of 3, against Phils and Cards, I'll take that each series and we'll be in good shape come October. Let's fry the "fish"!!

Yeah, a good fish fry, it's time someone showed those Marlins who the leader of the NL East really is. Generally I am ok with 2 outa 3, but it's time to put a stop to those Marlins, we need a big net and a clean sweep. They are not that good a team and should not be winning so many games. I just dont get it

Great perspectives as usual,sonny.....and I like that more Mets fans re getting into this thread. It's fun!:D

Tried to put up the Carlos Beltran amazing catch off of Ryan Ludwick, but damn it's no longer available!!!:grrr:Suffice to say,it was about as good as Endy Chavez' robbery in the 2006 NL championship series!Well, now I must tone down my gloating from a :p(!)--%----%--:gogirl:to a more understated but just as emphatic:twisted::badgrin:

tough loss tonite

up 2-0, give it up

take the lead 3-2 on some great baserunning by david wright and another error by uggla (remember the all star game?)

but they give it all back and lose 7-3

maine seems to be injured

hope its not bad

tough loss to division rival

Seriously it doesn't get better than this

I agree Sausy, it's great to see more guys posting here, I like the stuff Chance shares.

I am getting concerned for John Maine, that’s the second time he had had that stiffness in his shoulder.
He will have an MRI on Thursday to see just what is going on. Technically, the Mets won't need a fifth starter until Aug. 9, so they could give Maine an 11 day breather if he needs it. I sure hope Johnny will be ok, he was cursing pretty good there yesterday with that awesome high rising fastball but then that soreness came back,

Meanwhile those pesky Marlins continue to hit well, unfortunately Schoeneweis pitched miserably and that was the end of that. Ya gotta give the Marlins their due, they are feisty ball players who are very hungry, and if they improve their miserable defense (all three Mets runs were as a result of that) and base running, watch out! The Marlins lead the league in home runs and they have a pretty damn good shortstop. My dad calls them the little engine that could, he’s so cute. :)

So two more days till the trade deadline, I am holding my breath to see what Omar might do. He may be getting nervous with Pedro out (he is supposed to be back on Friday), Maine’s new troubles and an uncertainly about Church. Ryan is expected back by our next home stand. So what will the Mets do?
Probably nothing, hopefully nothing, but I have a feeling something might. I can feel it in my bones.
Of course the deadline could come and go and we could still make a move later with players who make it through wavers.

Great 4-1 win over the Marlins, with Oliver Perez continuing to shine,a strong relief effort by Aaron Heilmann and an uneventful Billy Wagner save. It doesn't look serious for John Maine(just a strain)but anytime you hear rotator cuff,it's kind of scary to hear.Hopefully a little rest will be enough.....John looked like he was going to have such a good year from his lights out spring training, and he has a ton of ability, intelligence and excellent work ethic.

Though he didn't score a run, what Met fan doesn't love the way Jose Reyes is playing? His last hit, that double.....I just love to see him run,and a Jose Reyes triple is such an incredible treat for Mets fans the strides he takes!:DOne of baseball's greatest pleasures today!..|

Carlos Delgado, another huge home run last night after David Wright's walk....more a golf drive than his awesome fly ball moon shots,it was a screaming liner that went out in a hurry! An amazing story, going from bench riding has been a couple months back to potentially an MVP candidate if the Mets make the playoffs!they have an option on him for next year, and I would love it if they exercised it and he has one more season with the Mets as their young first base prospects develop. Now that Mark Teixeira has been traded to the Angels, and probably will sign there,we should look to continue developing our own players....with a smart trade or free agent signing to compliment that.

Yes Sausy the Carlos boys were fun to watch last night, both hitting well in the clutch. Delgado continues to be patient at the plate and fighting off pitches.
How bout that bunt, what the Hell was that.
Beltan may be getting ready to get hot again, he seems to be getting a bit more aggressive and attacking the ball from both sides of the plate and that is a very good sign that he may be coming back.
Perez seemed to me to be a little off his game, he pitched well but there was something in his fastball I have not seen before, he seems to be mixing it up and it has affected his velocity. He had a shaky 6th but he battled back which is something the old Ollie was not doing, so that’s excellent. Hellman in relief pitched well, striking out lefties and righties. I got a little nervous when he came to the plate, but he pitched two great innings. That’s the thing about this bull pen, one day they blow games and then the next day they dominate.
Makes me nuts. ](*,)
I agree abut Maine, they say it’s mild case but we will see how he throws the ball when he gets back to Florida today and if he has no pain they will let him pitch on Sunday.

Tonight it’s Pelfrey and Johnson, with the Mets ready to win this series. We are only a half game up on the Phillies which is complicated by the fact that they are playing the Nationals. Not much of a contest there, Phillies should be able to sweep which puts more pressure on us.

Church took batting practice yesterday and said he feels 1000 percent, I love hearing that.
With Church at right, Tatis at left, and Beltran heating up, things are gonna get real interesting

Church will probably be rusty and take a bit to get going, but it's not like they were depending on him and once he gets into a groove, watch out with the way this lineup has been going lately!:D

That bullpen still scares me but Aaron was really impressive last night. As long as they don't take bad outings into the next game as before, the bullpen should be at least adequate.Came home late in the game last night(but caught the Delgado heatseeking missile live) and I was so pumped seeing it going over into the seats!:gogirl:

If they get a good deal I know Omar will jump on it,but maybe the way things are once Ryan Church gets back to speed that will be all the Mets will need otherwise.

Nice effort by the Mets last nite! Ollie's on a roll now, a couple of clutch hits, and good bullpen work, geez, what a formula. A win tonite would be great. Let's Go Mets!!

Yeah, the clutch hitting has been one of the things I am most happy about.
As for as the pen, well.......ya just never know what will happen
But they have been good more often than not.
Pelfrey should give us the series win tonight.
I sure hope he goes deep, maybe 8
7 for sure.;)

Pelfrey just made too many mistakes last night, and Joe Smith gave Dan Uggla an opportunity to show why he is on the baseball field(sure ain't for his defense)but these things happen...now half game out behind Philly.Hopefully Pedro can give them a lift at Houston on Friday.

Absolutely Sausy, I had hoped "Big Pelf" would go deep but funny thing is I had a feeling early in th game he was gonna crash last night. He can't win em all, and is going to have bad games, the important thing he is going to be a superstar.
I think he is already on his way, or already is, an ace.

Btw, I usually don't like to mix this kinda stuff in with the discussions in a baseball thread, but is it just me or does that Marlin team have a shit load of hot good looking dudes on the team. Seriously, there is some major babe action going on there.
Once again I have to give them credit, I love watching them play, I like their determination and their spunk. I'll tell ya what, they are not going away and are in it to the finish.

Pedro will be back on Friday and as you say Sausy, we can hope for a lift, Pedro is due and he has some new motivation, cause just before his dad died he told Pedro to keep playing baseball and that will be on Pedro's mind on friday. He is going to want that win more than any other before.
