New York Mets 2008

Btw, I usually don't like to mix this kinda stuff in with the discussions in a baseball thread, but is it just me or does that Marlin team have a shit load of hot good looking dudes on the team. Seriously, there is some major babe action going on there.
Once again I have to give them credit, I love watching them play, I like their determination and their spunk. I'll tell ya what, they are not going away and are in it to the finish.
It's not just you, sonny;).LOT of hotties on the Marlins!:gogirl:

You're right sonny, they are going to be tough. As prone as they are to defensive lapses, the pitching isn't great by any means but they play hard all the time and they could win this division. They cannot be taken lightly at all.Unlike the Mets last year who acted as if the division was theirs by divine right, this group of Marlins has the determination and focus to try to beat you in every game.

So the Mets did the right thing and stayed away from any trades. I know they (Omar, not the organization) would have loved to have gotten Manny Ramirez but he was smart and held on to guys like Martinez and Neise. The Mets want more time to see how well Church comes back and if Tatis stays hot. In addition we need to know Pedro will be healthy and Maine won’t have any more problems. Plus Ollie can leave next year. This is why we gotta keep guys like Niese and Parnell to fill in any holes that may develop in the starting rotation. Pus of course, Martinez in the outfield.
As we all know it is not really over till the end of August when guys clear wavers, so a deal could still happen if we need it, remember we did that with Shawn Green. I would be more open to a trade if and only if we need it, like a relief or starting pitcher or maybe in the corner outfield. But only if we need it, I only want difference makers

Speaking of Niese, he pitched a very good game at AAA the other nite. Hope Pedro has a great game tonite, can't let down against the Colt .45's, I mean Astros.

Yeah I like Niese, so glad Omar feels he should not be traded.
Pedro needs to do well tonight, I only expect him to go 5 or 6, and hopefully the pen will be strong. ya never know with those guys
We need this series, we have a bit of ground to make up.

Were to begin with last night’s debacle.

I did not see the game live but even though I knew the Mets had blown it I watched when I got home late last night to see just how bad it was..
First of all, Pedro who pitched 5 innings and was nowhere near his old self.
His fastball is now about 88-91 which is expected at his age and he did throw a couple of good upstairs fastballs, but most of the time his command was way off. He has given up somewhere around 20 home runs in just under 50 innings, and that ain’t good. Watching him pitch he just did not look good to me, he appeared tired and a little lost. Look at who he gave up homers to last night?? :grrr:
There was a time when none of those guys would have gotten a hit much less a homer. If all we are gonna get outta Pedro is 5-6 innings we are In trouble, cause the pen is just too inconsistent, well, maybe bad even. It looks to me like Pedro is no more than our fifth starter at best, after Santana, Pelfrey, Perez and Maine. Let’s bring someone in, (Neise?) because I am worried about Pedro, I no longer think he is going to make it through the season. :(

Joe Smith had a good outing and that’s good considering he has been struggling.
Then came Hellman, ](*,) Good God, how much longer can we go with this guy?

Now to the offensive, which gave up so many opportunities, I mean we lost out on a ton of em. One of the worst for me was in the 7th with no outs and bases loaded, what did the top of the line up give us? NOTHING! :grrr: That’s what.
By the way, does Schneider know the difference between running and jogging? . Worse than that is when the Astros were in the same position in the 8th they get a grand slam and bust the game open.
The Mets left seven men on base.

I could go on with this rant but what’s the point, I’ll just give myself more agita.

Did you guys hear those Astros fans booing Beltran, what’s up with that, jezz it’s been like 3 years since he left, get over it. Besides he was only an Astro for like 10minutes, well ok, a couple of months.

We can and must win the series and with Santana tonight we should be good to go. Let’s just hope the offense gives him more support than they gave Pedro.

Maine will miss his next start, they are being cautious which is good, with two days off this week we have that luxury, and so why not do it.

Can we stop blowing leads in the 8th or 9th inning please??? no, really.

Another poison pen melt down. :grrr:

Santana did a decent job going five and a third and giving up 3 hits and one run. But he needs to stop hitting guys (2 last night) and he has to go deeper, cause the pen is a mess, a disaster. Billy Wagner blew his 7th save and Heilman is just plain awful. That dude seriously needs to go and find some other kind of work. Sanchez might be ok once his knee fully heals; he is still feeling the pain there after getting hit. His fastball is definitely effected, he is only throwing about 86 MPH. Joe Smith is hot and cold but he has had two good outings lately.
It’s official, I won’t go so far as to say the Mets have the worst bull pen, but I will say they have the most unreliable pen in baseball. :(

Interesting move having Beltran bat in the #2 spot, I get the idea behind it; the hope is he will get hot again. He should see more fastballs in that spot especially with Reyes at first, cause just the stolen base threat will get him better pitches to hit. Plus he will have D Wright protecting him. I am just gonna take a wait and see approach to this move cause I am not sure what it does to the bottom of the order and if it weakens it. But I like what Manuel has done so far so we will see, of course when Ryan Church comes back everything changes anyways. Speaking of David Wright, his defense is still awesome although he threw a couple of balls to first that Delgado had to struggle to catch and spavined Davis an error or two. But David has not been doing enough at the plate he needs to step it up. One thing about David is he seems to get more productive outs than I have ever seen a hitter get before. So at least he moves the runners, but ya know David can do no wrong in my eyes *sigh*

How about this kid Daniel (don’t call him Dan) Murphy, he gets promoted to AAA and after one day finds himself in the big leagues. What a success story. He went 1-4 with his first major league hit and later scored on that. But it was his defense that blew me away, he has always played third base in the minors but of course that position won’t be available for a long time. So they have been moving him around and last night he got his first crack in the outfield. He was outstanding, that awesome catch he made leaping up and stealing that home run away from that Astro and then completed the inning ending double play. WOW! I love that kid. Marlon Anderson can stay on the DL, I think this Murphy kid is gonna get the job done.

I have not watched very many Astros games before, and I have to say I like watching them play, some decent hitters on that team that’s for sure. Also the Astro fans are very supportive unlike say the Marlins. Speaking about the Astro fans, ya gotta love those little Puma’s supporting
Lance (the big Puma) Berkman.
A word to Berkman: dude, you did not fool anyone getting hit by the pitch, you did not even try and avoid that ball, your job is to make contact and drive the ball and not pussy out and let yourself get hit by a pitch. An unearned walk is what I call it. How come the umps never call guys on that?

So boys and girls we have to start thinking about some help in the pen cause these guys are killing us
I mentioned in another post that I think the Mets will still make a move before the wavers August deadline. With Pedro and big question, at least in my mind and the uncertainty of Maine, we may be looking for another starter as well as a relief pitcher. I am not concerned at all about the corner outfield, which will be fine. So now I hear the Twins have designated right hander Livan Hernandez for assignment and the Mets are interested in him. Does not sound like a good move to me at all, let’s just bring up Niese instead. Hernandez does not impress any more, maybe at one time but not anymore.
Don’t do it Omar!

So today it’s up to Ollie to stop the bleeding, he will need to go deep, since the pen is all puckered out and would be useless today. Well…..they are pretty much useless everyday.

since the pen is all puckered out and would be useless today. Well…..they are pretty much useless everyday.

Haha I was going to ask, "today???"

I didn't watch today, and I'm glad for it. At least we're back where we belong now (3rd in the division). I just look at Heilman every day and ask aloud, "WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE???" But lately it ain't just Heilman. It's Scott Schoenweiss, and Billy Wagner, and Joe Smith. Poison Pen indeed. I looked at the box score, but how did Eddie Kunz look on the mound today?

how did Eddie Kunz look on the mound today?

Kunz was ok; he threw hard in the zone with an impressive 93 MPH sinker and did get a ground ball out in an inning ending double play.
He was tested to be sure.
We may have to depend on him more now depending on the outcome of Billy Wagner’s MRI today. It’s his second in the last week on that forearm.
We have additional pitching problems now with Maine on the 15 day Dl.
That kid has got some problems. Pitching both starting and relief is as bad as it has ever been and I am very concerned.
I have been writing about Niese and waiting for him to come up and help us out, he should be here later this week. I thought they would use him in Maine’s spot on Friday, but he pitched last night in New Orleans where he had a decent performance in his second game, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings
as New Orleans won 3-2. In his first game last Wednesday, he struck out seven batters over seven innings, allowed one run, before getting prompted to AAA he had been 6-7 with an ERA of 3 for Double-A Binghamton. I guess the Mets might move the rotation around and let Perez pitch Friday and Neise on Saturday on four days rest. The Mets also like Parnell’s arm so we may see him as well. They went out to watch him pitch at AA this week.

I have heard a whole lot of noise from the media laying all the problems the Mets are having at Omar’s feet, blaming him for not making any moves before the trade deadline. I still support his decision to stay the course and work with the young guys we have in AA and AAA, Of course I would have loved to have gotten Nady back and said that many times, but not at the cost of giving up guys like Jon Niese and Fernando Martinez, No way!
The new kids like Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz, Dan Murphy, Brian Stokes to name a few, are gonna come out and help the veterans win games, Just sit back and watch boys and girls, the Mets will bounce back..

Ya gotta believe.

.

Ryan Church received very good news about his latest tests late on Friday night. The doctors have cleared Ryan to go to Florida to begin playing in minor league games. He’ll initially DH in Port St. Lucie after working out at Shea on Saturday. :D

I am wondering how it will affect the outfield. with Tatis playing so well and of course Endy Chavez,
it is gonna get a little crowed out there. I sure don't wanna mess with the awesome and amazing Daniel Murphy at left :=D:

Then there is NIck Evans who can play first, (man can he ever) ..| and give Delgado some relief

If nothing else, the Mets will have one of the best benches in baseball ;)

Now if the pen can get out of that funk we will be on our way.
Heilman improved Thursday and Friday winning one and saving the other, so maybe has found him self. Keep in mind however, that he gave up 3 long drives last night and it was the defense that saved his ass. So I ain't gettin my hopes up too high yet. I still shake and quiver whenever the pen gets the ball, and watch the game with one eye shut. But like I always say, ya gotta believe, and I do.

Ya got to believe, and keep your eyes, fingered and toes crossed with that bullpen! We love the Mets,as much agita as they give us(sonny will definitely know what that means)!;)

I'm loving the performances of Murphy and Evans, the bench, the starters Pelfrey,Santana and Perez(as bad as he was earlier, every good opponent he's faced Ollie has performed magnificently with ace-like focus).David Wright looks like he is getting back on track with his last two day's home runs.Delgado is a force again and Reyes has been despite a recent mini-slump probably among the top impact players in the game.

Hoping Beltran can get moving offensively, though his inconsistency at bat has not hurt his defense at all.Looks like John Maine will be back soon and as you mentioned sonny Ryan Church is really close to returning. He seems symptom free from his concussion complications and loks ready to get himself quickly acclimated and back in the lineup after a tuneup.

I sure do babe, everytime the pen blows another one. look at the shit that came down yesterday after Pelfrey left ](*,) Now THAT gave me big time agita.
Brian Stokes was good enough the other day to hold on to. I think he should stay in the pen and be our long man.

I'm loving the performances of Murphy and Evans

I wrote about Murphy in the favorite baseball pl;ayers thread, the kid is awesome. I get all pumped up as soon as I see him at the plate.
Murphy and Evans were roomates in the minors and have become great friends,
Murphy also has the help and support of Delgado in the outfield, guiding and teaching him.

Maine threw a bull pen, 60 some odd pitches, and did very well, and as you said will be back for his next turn in the rotation. I sure hope he is back to his old self.
Church should also be back in about a week-10 days as long as he continues to show no signs of the concussion. He said yesterday he is doing great and has had no setbacks in a while, the Mets want to take it slow, which is good.
Wagner is also doing very well, the Mets are planning to let him pitch in a couple of rehab games this weekend with the Cyclones and return to the Mets next Monday. With Maine,Wagner, and Church all back, things are sure looking good.
Of course I wanna keep Murphy out there as well.

The big problem resurfaced so horribly again today...that poison pen of death!:grrr::mad:No way Pedro deserved this afyer six strong innings, allowing only three hits and one run. After the game,Jerry Manuel pretty much left all options open for the bullpen, now and after Billy Wagner's return. He was pissed, steely and angry about walks an indecisive pitching that leads to the runs the opposition,in this case Pittsburgh, scored off them without a fight. It looks like Aaron Heilman may have to deal with more of a mop up role for now...for sure Manuel said he will not be at the end of close games. This 7-5 bullpen disaster is a tremendous disappointment, with the euphoria of Robinson Cancel's homer and great overall offensive game,Reyes continuing to look like the best, most exciting leadoff man in the game and David Wright's clutch three run homer early in the game.

I am so bummed!:(

I can not even find the words...

I did not see the game yesterday but I saw highlights, (or should I say lowlights), and Manuel's press conference. I believe he is finally fed up and we may see some real action on the problem. Just imagine if we can't sweep the pathetic Nationals the next 3 days, like my grandpa would say, I'll take the gas pipe.
Why oh why do they keep dredging that collection of losers out to continuously loose games? It seems Manuel has to use a new pitcher for almost every hitter, sometimes two for the same hitter. it's just pathetic. Why not give Stokes a shot at it, I think he could come in early and be our long man, or Kunz? my God they have to give them both a shot now, they just gotta. Did either one pitch yesterday?

As for David, I saw the replay when he threw the bat, helmet and gloves in the
8th or 9th, and I thought, he is not responding so much to the fact that he did not contribute in that inning, although that was a part of it, it seemed to me to more about him thinking, why am I in this position in the first place, why does the pen keep creating this mess.
We will never make it to the playoffs with the pen such as it is, NEVER!
Billy Wagner had better be back better than ever or we are sunk.
Everything else is clicking now, offense, defense and starting pitchers, although the starters need to go a little deeper, especially Pedro. The only thing hurting us right now is the poison pen.

A few days later,a very happy recap!:DMets in first over the Philliies...but we've got to keep it going!..|No posts on the Mets great wins,sonny?....from tough nailbiters to fun blowouts, they are winning in every way and now against the teams they have to dominate.:gogirl:This division is up for grabs and whom among the Mets or Phillies are the hungriest and toughest willl determine who will rightly earn this division.....no more complacency, assumption, arrogance and sense of entitlement ever again!

Well look at us, two games ahead of Philadelphia in first place.
So how did we get here? Well the answer is pitching, defense and more pitching. Our starters have been awesome, all of them. We have not allowed any runs through 6 innings the whole week and the guys are going deeper into the game and keeping the pitch counts down. Pedro pitched great yesterday and did it without the use of his fastball, which I am sure the Pirates were waitin for, and he went seven innings. He is clearly making progress and my declaration to move him to the 5th position may happily have been premature.
The offense has been producing, scoring early and maintaining leads. This of course gives the starters breathing room. Even the strike out king Schneider hit a homer.
The pen has made some headway but I still get nervous when those boys take the ball. Sanchez seems to be healing more and you can see proof of that in his increased velocity, so he may be turning the corner. Heilman, well what can I say about that kid, he has good stuff, if only he would find it and use it. But he has been pretty good the last couple of games. He seems to be Jerry’s main man for closing, at least till Kunz gets his act together. Yesterday Kunz pitched for the first time in almost 9 days so of course he got lit up, he was rusty and prolly nervous as hell. I wish Manuel had used him more over the last week. Jerry said he did not want to use Kunz cause he had not seen him pitch that much and did not know what to expect. HUH?? How the Hell are you ever gonna find out if you let him rust away in the pen and not let him pitch? I am glad he finally put him in although that may not have been the best time. Can someone tell me why Stokes left the game last night after just pitching a beautiful 8th inning only to have a rust Kunz and an unstable Smith almost blow it? Oh yeah right, I forgot, righty lefty, lefty righty. Hey Jerry, sometimes you get a guy like Stokes who can pitch to both; ya should have left him in. Speaking of lefty against righty, red hot Murphy was not in last nights game because of the left pitcher, so right handed Evans (0-4) played instead. Murphy has already proven he can hit lefties so what was up with that? I understand the lefty righty situation and of course it is necessary, but come on, ya don’t take a guy like Murphy out of the line up completely. Yeah I know, Evans needs paying time too. It’s like I have been sayin the Mets have got one hell-of-a bench.
Wagner’s returned has been delayed, he threw a really good simulated game yesterday and did really well, but he felt soreness in his elbow and flew to NY to see what is up with that. Meantime it will be righty against lefty, lefty against righty or basically a new relief pitcher for every batter. But wait, we have Stokes who went long and pitched beautifully the other night

So we are 5-0 in this road trip, and Santana should make it 6-0 today. But the Pirates have a hot pitcher in Karsten, so it may be a low scoring game. A really good pitchers dual

Church is on track to return maybe as soon as next week. Of course the question still remains what happens to Tatis, and with Castillo returns what happens to A. Reyes. I hate to loose any of these young guys. A lot of people told me, hey Joey; those kids will have a short shelve life so you should be glad to get the veteran back. But I see no let up or expired shelf life in any of em. The same guys told me watch out for Pelfrey cause he is gonna crap out t soon. Some say he is in uncharted waters never having pitched for so long, well last night proved that to be a crock, he is gonna be strong right through to October, That’s right, I said October
Gotta go the game is starting

I luv that they are playing so well and are peaking at the right time. They are playing great, solid fundamental baseball and beating the teams they should beat.

Speaking of beating, I got hard during the game (was looking at porn as well) and began to wank - shot my load right when Beltran hit the home run in the 6th inning. Just the relaxing afternoon I needed - all I needed was a cock to suck. :-)

Dude, the post started out really great, your comments were right on. But then you went a little nuts. May I respectfully remind you this is a sports forum and while most of us do not mind a little comment here and there about a hot player, you clearly crossed the line. I hope you understand and are not offended by this response but it had ro be said . Please keep it about sports and not your sex life, by the way who the heck watches sports and porn at the same time???
Please keep posting I want to hear more about your feelings regarding sports and the Mets in particular, just try and not be so horned up while you do. ;)
