Why am I so giddy today? Why can’t I get this grin off my face? Let’s see now, oh yeah,

THE METS SWEPT THE BREWERS

In addition to that we are in first leading by three games. (Thanks Nats)

I guess we have to start with our new rejuvinated bullpen and the work Dan has done whipping them into shape. Then there is dear sweet Jerry and his courage and, as he calls it “gut reactions” to the problem. It turns out that mix and match solution has worked big time for us. Of course this gives the guys in the pen new confidence in themselves which is paying off. 9 out of 10 scoreless innings from our pen. Awesome!

But wait; there may be trouble in the starting line up. Pedro was excused from his last start and now I hear he is working with his trainer to overcome a stiff shoulder. I also recall his last outing throwin only like 81 MPH. Should we be worried by this? Will he be out again? Well, maybe, we will know Saturday, that is if he pitches of course. If he doesn’t, who should we put in there? This is an important series this weekend with the Phillies, don’t wanna mess it up. I guess maybe Omar has something up his sleeve but if we need to draw from the pen I would go with Figueroa. The only other choice would be Stokes, but I like him in the pen he could be our long man or our short man. I have only seen him pitch variations of just two pitches, a great fastball and slider.
Then there is Maine, will he surprise us and return? Nah, I doubt it.

Speaking of injuries, I guess you guys noticed Castillo was hurtin last night, he had trouble running, I wonder about his knees acting up again. So don’t be surprised if he is out again. No worries though we have that great platoon of A. Reyes (who is back with the expanded roster) and Easley, so we will be in great shape there if we loose Castillo again.

I was so psyched to see Church hit that grand slam off of that change up, man oh man, if he has gotten his bat back we will be in a very sweet place.

Just think about our killer line up. Delgado, who is turning on the heat, at first, A. Reyes/Easley at second, Wright at third, J. Reyes at short. Then we have Murphy in left field against the right handed pitchers, (with of course Endy), and Evans against the lefties. Moving to right, we have Church against the righties and Tatis against lefties. Last but not least, the chief of the outfield Mr. Carlos Beltran, who by the way in case you have not noticed is killing batting from the right side.
(gotta love them switch hitters).

Is that the most powerful line up in the NL? Ok, ok, so the Cubs are good too, but I’m just sayin, look at what we have.

Yea sonny,I'm concerned about Pedro's drop in velocity and hopefully the work he'll be doing in the next day or so will improve things.He was masterful but really when the velocity isn't there the movement,location and ability to mix up pitches must be damn near perfectly executed to have an opportunity to win.

I agree,great to see Church's grand slam and steady regaining of his groove.The lineup may not be the best but it is damn good.Wright over 100 RBI and Delgado and Beltran both with 96.Jose Reyes is incredible and Church is very steady.Schneider has shown some unexpected power and in Argenis Reyes,Damion Easley,Endy Chavez,Nick Evans and Dan Murphy you get a solid group of role players doing the job!

Our Phillies series is in danger of some major rain out action on Saturday; with what will be left of Hana coming through is doubtful we will have a game. Since the two teams have no common days off left I expect a double header on Sunday.
Sunday will have Santana and Hamels. It will be the first time we have seen Hamels on a long time it should be a pitchers duel to end em all, with the Mets winning of course. As good as Hamel is
(and he is) Santana and our offense will crush him and sending him and the Phillies crying for their mommy’s.

Meanwhile for those interested in our minor league affiliates, the Cyclones won yesterday holding on to their half game lead in the wild card. Just two more games left in the regular season. The Staten Island Yankees clinched the New York-Penn League's McNamara Division yesterday as well.

I got another good look at Ike Davis yesterday, he went 2-3 and showed me some decent defense at first. That kid will be ready in a year or two. Another kid to watch you may not have heard of is Wilmer Flores he is a young kid and will need a lotta time but he can play a mean short. He bats like .295. He says he wants to be a third baseman but with Wright entrenched there for a long, long time, if the kid wants to be a Met in the majors he will have to find another spot.
I always followed the Cyclones, have attended a lot of games and have meet some of the guys, but since guys like Murphy, Evans and A. Reyes have busted out I have a lot more interest in these up and coming guys now more than ever.

You got it right about Cory!I just razzed him a little too much in my previous post I wanted to give him a bit of a break!

I'm not optimistic about Saturday's game myself with the forecast for heavy rain and wind from Hanna.Sunday doubleheaders are great though,and I should get home from work early enough to catch the end of the first game.

Big test for Santana and Hamel,but I think Santana will outduel Hamel.Send him home crying to Mommy?Sonny,you can be cold sometimes!Ya know I love that in you!

Great you live close enough to be able to catch the Cyclones and watch some up and coming Mets we'll be talking about soon.Ike Davis is great but we've also got Nick Evans and possibly Dan Murphy and Mike Carp as eventual contenders for first base.....that's a good dilemma to have.Minor league baseball has a lot going for in in its own right.More of a neighborhood,intimate warm atmosphere for fans.

Which Cyclones have you met,sonny?

I have gotten like a dozen or so autographs and met three of em. Wilmer Flores, who comes from the Kingsport Mets.and wanted me to know that was where Jose Reyes played. He says he has been playing professional baseball for just over a month, in fact he is just turned 17 so he knows he has a lot of playing to do to make into the big leagues but I reminded him Fernando Martinez was just 18 when he first played for the Mets. I also met David Havens, quiet kid did not say much. Most times the guys will just field questions from the crowd so you don’t really get to met them. But the eye contact is always nice.
I shared a smile and a “howz it goin” with Kirk Nieuwenhus (not sure that’s spelled right) a center fielder. Man, what a good lookin kid.
I gave a shout out to Roy Merritt last month, I was blown away by his arm, great pitcher, I yelled out something about “see you soon in flushing” or some lame thing like that, dono if he heard me, think he did.

I ran into Kevin Burkhart in the men’s room of all places. I think you know who he is he is the #4 guy in the SNL team that broadcasts Mets games. My first reaction was “Kevin Burkhart how the hell are ya” he smiled and said something like he was doin great. I think I scared him to death. I went on to tell him I thought he did an outstanding job interviewing the Mets. (which of course he does) He told me the guys make it very easy for him cause they have taken him in as one of their own, there is a genuine liking for him among the players, in fact he told me he knew he was in when they pulled their first prank on him, which he wears that like a badge of honor. Nice dude, sweet, sweet guy.

For me, meeting these guys is better than any celeb I could run into. I just respect and admire them more than any Hollywood type,

That sounds like a lot of fun,sonny!Flores sounds like Reyes is a big idol of his,and you're right about how Fernando Martinez was really young when he first played for the Mets(I think though that he may have been Flores' age).

How good is Roy Merritt?Any stats on him this year you have at the top of your head?And that center fielder must have been hot....I can imagine he must have been thinking"Oh,he's a real Italian Stallion" while in your mind you must have given your most seductive"How 'ya doin"look!He have any big club potential,at least to get a look one day?

That was funny about Kevin Burkhard,and damn yes I know him from SNY....good-looking guy,too,btw(yes,I know you usually don't like the talk going there,but it's true!)Not what he must have been expecting just trying to take a leak,but it's great it turned into a really nice little conversation.He does a really professional job every day,and I can see where he makes it easy to get the player's respect and confidence.He's definitely an up and comer in the sports broadcast business,really knowledgeable,prepared and likeable.

A disappointing loss tonight,3-0 and we couldn't get it going with runners in scoring position again.David is struggling some recently in these men on base situations but he'll get over it,and nice to see him smoke a double off of Ridge in the ninth.Delgado singled but Beltran chased ball four and looped a soft liner out.Church gave it a ride to deep center but Shane Victorino(love his nickname,"The Flyin' Hawaiian")hauled it in to end the game.Dan Murphy,who I'm loving more and more gave Lidge fits with a great 10 pitch at bat to lead off the inning.....he had two doubles during the game and looks like he has the instincts to be a really good player.

Sorry to see Mike Pelfrey take a tough loss ,especially giving up that two run homer iin the seventh to Coste.Only allowed three runs,four hits in seven but Brett Myers was just in charge tonight,he had the Mets on a string tonight.Tomorrow looks like a rainout with Hanna,so hopefully the Mets bounce back with the doubleheader Sunday.

How good is Roy Merritt? And that center fielder must have been hot....

During August Merritt had an era of 1.49 He has been the team’s Billy Wagner all summer, (without the drama) He has allowed only one earned run over his last 15 2/3 innings. He closed the game I saw on Thursday and was lights out. A very exciting and hugely talented left hander
As for kurk, Well I love watchin this kid play, I watched him crush a three run homer a couple weeks ago. Yeah gotta know how exciting and pumped up I get seeing the new kids do stuff like that. Let me tell ya sometimes it’s better than sex.
What I know about him is he was drafted in the 3rd round 2008 amateur draft out of Azusa Pacific University. Not bad with the stick either, in 2008 he has batted .400 with 15 homers and 68 RBIs in 2008.

Sooooooooo maybe I did not tell you exactly how it went down, actually I saw him go in and followed him. But trust me it wasn't for anything but to meet him, seriously. He went in to wash up so it was easy to approach him, and I don't mind talking bout his looks which are stunning, awesome eyes you have to see close up. i Just melted in em. But I digress, it's his baseball knowledge that impresses me and man on man would I ever love to get to know him and hear about the great Mets stories he must have.

So what that tells me is the Mets wanna test him out at second, sorta test the waters. Now we know he’s coming back next year but could it be as our second baseman? Like I wrote earlier I fully expect Castillo to be gone by then. Great opportunity for Murph, I love that the Mets are sending him to Arizona, big things ahead for him for sure. Of course that means if the Mets go deep into the playoffs we won’t see much of him here in NY, but that’s cool, let him show the Mets where else he can play besides the outfield.

Yea sonny,we won't win 'em all...Meyers had the Mets number last night and was brilliant.I've heard Murphy insists on being called Daniel,so that's what I'll call him,not Dan.I read that in the Daily News yesterday,wanted to see if you would bring it up before talking about it.That is really interesting news....he originally was an infielder,though I'm not sure he played second base before.If he can handle the conversion adequately defensively,great idea because he will be a great offensive player there.A doubles machine with some home run power,maybe in the twenty-thirty range.

I know he will make the effort and his instincts have tended to be really good,very mature for such a young player.Goodbye Luis Castillo error,hello Daniel Murphy era...though I hope Argenis Reyes could be used from the bench,get a decent amount of at bats.

Hey,don't knock it chance...football is great but these are key pennant games,look at how uninspiring the Giants were early last season before their incredible run to the Super Bowl!Pedro over Eli,at least in September!

Tomorrow night's game with Santana should be great!Great you're finally getting an opportunity to see him pitch!He's a strikes throwing competitor and has raised his game,intensity wise,in recent weeks.

Sausy I missed that NY Daily News atricle on "Daniel" wish I had seen that. I did read about it somewhere else. I am going to follow the story to Colorado and keep us up to date on how he is doing.
Just to be sure you guys knew, as well as the night game on ESPN, the day game wil be on SNY at 2:15 with a 2:00 pre game. If you haven't seeen the Citi field update show with my man Kevin Burkhardt, it will repeat today at 1:30 just before the game.

I am gonna pig out on some baseball today.

Wakefield's shocked the hell out of me, 1 and 2/3, yikes!
It was his 500th game for Boston, to bad it went so badly, I hate to see things like thast happen to a guy on such a milestone day.
for those who missed it he allowed seven runs against nine batters in the second inning.

That had to be his shortest outing of the season, kept the Red Sox from getting closer to winning the AL East. It also broke Boston's four-game winning streak.

No worries babe, take it from a Mets fan, these things happen.
Jus not as often to Boston Ya think his shoulder is acting up again?

Latest on Billy Wagner:

He is getting closer to returning, but might not come back as a closer right away..

Jerry Manuel said that how Wagner performs in a possible minor-league rehab assignment Sunday, or in his first few big-league appearances next week, will determine his role with the team.

"Nobody is guaranteed nothing here," Manuel said. "If that performance is what we hope it to be, sure, he'll come back and do what he's been doing. But if there are any signs of shakiness, then I'll have to make a decision. Whatever it takes to win the game, that's what we'll do."

I am 110% behind that call, we are not desperate for his return, we want him back but we want he back healthy,. We are to close to the wire now, no room for mistakes.

after pedro crapped the bed today and the offense looked anemic vs. moyer (same as last time in ny) ................ things were getting hairy

david wright looks awful at the plate - i mean awful - made a nice def play in the 7th inning i believe - his fielding is gold (jerry)

Game one yesterday was pretty bad with the cold bats and sloppy outfield. At least Pedro who with his medicre performance has increased his velocity. So I guess you could say there is improvement. But at lest the bull pen has not blown up in a while, which is comforting because the news on Wagner is not so good, Wagner tested his arm Sunday between doubleheader games. It did not go well, he felt the pain again. In fact he hit the catcher in the foot after about 15 pitches. Billy is going to be re-examined by a doctor Monday and could be done for the season.

I am not happy with the fact that in the first two games with the Phillies we scored only 2 runs in 18 innings.
I have of course noticed Wright’s position at the plate, he is back to doing the things that got him into trouble earlier this and last season. But he will make adjustments I am sure, improvement will come in the Nationals series. he knows what the problem is which is why I have confidence in the hard working David to work it out to improve. Let’s not forget at the moment he is .289 but should be above.300 soon, with 27 HRs, 105 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Not too shabby.

In Cyclone news, Saturday's game against Aberdeen was cancelled due to the weather The game was not gonna be made up.
No matter cause They were eliminated from the NYPL Playoff race on Friday night. Game over, check please.

Billy saw the doc this morning and the news is very bad.
He will undergo elbow surgery and may be out through 2009.
He was diagnosed with a torn muscle and ligament in his pitching elbow and will need about 12 months to recover.

Thing is, Billy may have played his final game for the Mets. His contract expires after next season and the club holds a $10 million option for 2010.
First we have that horrible situation with Tom Brady and now Wagner, it's gotta be tough on these guys.
I am so bummed

How could the damage to Billy Wagner's elbow be so bad?Strained forearm,elbow strain....nohing medicallly reported previously as bad as a torn muscle and ligament in his pitching elbow!WTF?!!!I feel terrible for him,especially that his Met career is probably over as is pitching career,period.Really tough news,wish his career with the Mets had ended on a really good note,with the Mets seeing a regular appearance of the Houston/Philly Billly the Kid, rather than only the sometimes tantalizing taste we've received over the past few years with his erratic performances.....but it doesn't look good.We have to hope there's someone who can step up permanently,be it Ayala or someone else.They've got this young power arm they've brought up,Parnell I think his name is.Supposed to have electric,Joba Chamberlain like stuff if I'm correct sonny?

After the lackluster Pedro game(better velocity but frustrating lack of movement)made worse by Moyer's continued mastery over the Mets maddeningly inconsistent offense(saw snippets on sports reports and online because I had work)the Mets had to win the night matchup of Santana/Hamels. Simply to avoid the psychological blow of the Phillies giving it to the Mets again,just how they did last season at this time that began the Mets great collapse of 2007.After having the Phillies number this year until the Philly wins Friday and Sunday afternoon,the Mets did not need to unnecessarily open up the situation so doubts could appear again regarding the Mets toughness and resolve in adversity.


Santana made sure it didn't happen.He was hit a bit,and the defense (David Wright made a couple of great plays behind Johann,particularly)backed him up but Santana proved masterful and clutch when he needed to most.And poor Hamels couldn't even make good with the advice of Jamie Moyer how to pitch to Carlos Delgado after the first moonshot....yep,he was Carlos'bitch last night trying to slip the change up by him.The moonshot over the second deck in right was so impressive the Mets announcers were joking that that shot was the first Home run hit in City Field....certainly looked like it landed there(460 feet was the estimated distance of that missile).Ryan Howard hurt us a bit,and the catcher,but Jimmy Rollins,Shane Victorino,Chase Utley and Pat Burrell were pretty well neutralized.6-3 Mets over the Phillies and the chants for Carlos Delgado as MVP was music to the ears of Mets fans,because he has been the Mets hammer of doom to the opposition the past two months....65 RBI in 65 games.


Sonny,agree with you on David Wright and I know you love to look at the players mechanics to see what's going wrong or "wright"(I love those David Wright puns)The interesting thing is during the collapse of last September David proved to be one of the few reliable Mets...his defense is vastly more consistent and no one works harder than David,he doesn't need to press offensively and hopefully he'll finish off the season strong for a huge playoff run.


Mets still two games ahead of Philly and now face the Nationals and Braves,so hopefully they'll take advantage.But it was great to see that the Mets had the last word over the Phillies at Shea.

Oh I forgot to mention, at least Wakefield didn't plat peek a boo with his fly open the way Beckett did the night before.
Come to think about it Boston won that game, so maybe an open fly will be a new trend
