New York Mets 2008

Well Mets fans I can’t add much to what Sausy so elegantly wrote about the Games on Wednesday and Thursday. I thank him for that.

Just a few thoughts
I thought that incredible broken bat play from Santana was the start of something big, maybe a repeat of the black cat incident, maybe “bat cat”
Santana was brilliant.

Ollie Perez who continues to go out there unfocussed, and what the Hell is up with those walks? I’ll tell you, next year I want rid of him, I can’t stand to look at that look of hopelessness on that face any more. Ollie and Pedro must not be back. I love Pedro but his glory days are clearly over and he must move on. Of course I also want a stronger pen, get rid of Sanchez and Hellman for starters and rebuild from there. Looks like Omar will get four more years and he had better pay a lot of attention to the pitching both starting and most importantly relief.
Looks like, although he wants to, Jerry Manual had all but decided not to allow Maine to pitch this season. He worries about the kid hearting himself. Although the doctors have said the spur would not cause Johnny any additional injury, Manual does not to risk it. I dono, if the docs say he can pitch I say let him go out there and pitch one batter a time in relief. It is not the same as it was with Church who came back to soon. Manes injury is totally different and I think he should be able to help us out in the pen. So we will see what ends up happen.

D Wright may take that strike out to his grave; it will be a while before we get over that one. He was doing better, shortening his stroke and not chasing balls. But he is back doing that again, swinging at balls clearly out of the strike zone and just trying to hard. He needs to relax.

Leaving bases loaded in both the 8th and 9th innings is just unforgivable, my God; we have got to get the runners home.

Last night was an absolute thriller. What a game! Fun to watch and well executed. One of the Highlights for me was the Ryan Church slide, damn, that was great, and I hope you all got to see that.
The low light was poor Daniel Murphy, what was he thinking bunting with two outs? Clearly there was some miscommunication cause the bunt was taken off after the first strike. Poor kid I felt really bad for him, he looked really bad bunting, totally dazed and confused and then to add insult to injury he pops up the bunt attempt for strike three. Yikes! Poor baby, he usually looks so good at the plate, always in control having intelligent at bats. He looked really bad at that at bat, except of course for his rockin ass. Opps did I say that out loud .

Pedro went into the seventh (whodda guessed he would do that?) He had his usual shaky start in the first with his change which was up but then settled down. All in all not a terrible outing. Of course we have to keep in mind he faced an irregular team of Cubs. If the A team was out there the outcome might have been different. Joe Smith was excellent; I liked his ability to pound those lefties. I like that a lot.

So with the rain this weekend no plans have been set as yet as to how we get the Marlins series in. Obviously they will have to be made up some how. Of course, the Marlins want very much to kick our butts in the last games of the season again. I am sure they will want to win on Sunday the last game at Shea to try and humiliate us. No, No we gotta beat those punks and beat em bad. The NL East is still there for us to take, and with a little help fro the Nationals, who had given the Phillies a lot of grief this year, we can take it. I want the NL East, I will only settle for the wild card. This is one of the most exciting finishes you could ask for. With the weather having an effect on everything from starting pitchers to game reschedules. It is all a little overwhelming.
Even without any postponements, the regular season could go into Tuesday. Should the Mets, Phillies and Brewers end in a three-way tie, the Mets and Phillies would play for the NL East title Monday; if the Mets lost that, they would host the Brewers for the wild card Tuesday. If the Mets and Brewers were to tie for the wild card, the tiebreaker would be at Shea Monday. But that is assuming a dry Friday and Saturday, which, according to the weather forecasts, ain’t happening.

We just have to take it one game at a time, and by that I mean winning one game at time.

Are you kiddin me with last nights game, I mean, what the fuck was that??

It started in the first 2 innings and just went downhill from there.
I am not going to even dignify last nights game with many comments
This was an important game and we responded by leaving men on base, not scoring runs, and hitting into double play after double play.
Pelfrey got his ass kicked by the Marlins bats, AGAIN.
Will someone please explain to me why Jerry Manual keeps putting Heilman in games?
Seriously, is Aaron sucking Jerry’s dick??
I had been recording the debate to watch after the game, but when Heilman threw that ball away with the bases juiced and walked in a run I turned of the game and watched the debate never to return to see the rest of that fiasco.

I am so disappointed in my team; I am so sick of having my hopes build up only to have them torn down time after time. We have zero chance for the NL East now and only a slim chance of a wild card spot.

Santana pitches today on three days rest after throwing 125 pitches, the most of his career, in his last start.
But of course what are our options, Knight?? Figueroa??? Neise????
Ok so let’s say we win with Santana today, then what happens tomorrow?
Do we suffer the humiliation of a loss on Sunday the last game at Shea?
Yeah, probably.

Usually I am very sad when the baseball season ends and I have to wait six months for it to start up again. But this year it’s different, cause if the Mets fail to even make it into the wild card, it won’t be sadness, and it will be anger and disgust.

How did this happen, well let me count the ways in another post.

I still love my team, I would stick with them no matter what, and it is because of my love for them that I get so emotional when they fail.
Can anyone understand that?

Yup, but I've just given up and always expect the worse.

Remember, it's not over until it's over.

The Phils usually screw up as well so the Mets do have chance.

:)

I feel your pain and despair. Losing is one thing, but just looking so inept at times pisses me off.

The Phillies woild have to lose both today and tomorrow and the Mets would have to win both days. Who are we kiddin
But I love your optimisum ;)

yup, it makes me crazy.](*,)

* screams out* SAUSY! :cry::cry:

just got home from the game (went shopping after)

Johan was amazing

really amazing

complete game shutout - 9ks

nolasco has really good stuff and we only got 2 runs - rbi by martinez to make it a 2 run game - he's been terrific

still worried about the offense which has been non existent

w/o johan tomorrows game would not be meaningful

cubbies beat the brew crew so we live another day

we're tied - with ollie going tomorrow

last game he crapped the bed, helping to blow a 5-1 lead against zambrano and us losing 9-6 in what might go down in history as the worst game ever in mets history

am i being too negative????? LOL

i think ollie will pitch a beauty

but we better fucking start hitting

how do they do tickets if theres a monday playoff?

lets go mets

Let's just say if Ollie craps out again,he will have pitched his last as a Met.If he's good or great,I still don't want to commit big bucks to a free agent under Scott Boras who is as capable of brilliance as out of control debacle. But he is the only realistic possibility tomorrow.Lots to say, more later from today:D and as much as I want to forget ever happened, yesterday.:(

Awww......Sausy (*8*)
Thanks,Scrub(*8*)I just wish this club had the heart of the '86 championship club, which was arrogant and cocky but gave every effort every day. That club had a few more really good years, but it was how they played that always endears them to Mets fans.

Santana is God.

What a performance, or as Jerry Manual called it “gangsta”
Johan showed us how much he is worth to the team with a complete 3 hit shutout.
It seems to me the thing for the Mets to do in 09 is just let Santana pitch every game for 9 innings. We would save on payroll, get rid of that poison pen and win the division and World Series. I mean it’s so obvious I dono why the Mets have not thought about it. (I am sure Jerry has)

Ok, so I guess maybe I am a little giddy, today’s game is going to be a thriller, with Oliver Perez on the mound against Scott Olsen, meantime Sabathia will be pitching for the Brewers against Zambrano.
Ollie can go either way, sometimes he can be brilliant in big situations like this, but he is pitching on short rest and we can not forget his last couple of crappy outings like the last one where he lasted only 4 1/3 innings and allowed five earned runs along with five walks to the Cubs. :help:
It will be, as they say, a nail bitter, We need Ollie to be sharp, NOT WALK EVERY OTHER BATTER, and go deep to avoid to much use of the pen. Oh and that he won’t pull a Tom Glavin on us. *shutters*
But, I dono why but I agree with Chance1, somehow I jus think Olllie will pull it off.

Big day at Shea, rain permitting, lt’s all Shea final day stuff starting at 11:30am and continuing for about another hour after the game today. All on SNY.

Come out of that dark room Sausy, like you said, it will be alright ;)

^ yep - go ollie go

i like him - didn't like him the other day - he was overthrowing IMO - but today .............

let's go ollie

and we gotta hit some

if johan wasn't pitchin yesterday we'd have lost - nolasco is that good

today ..........

lets go mets

no tix for this boy - gonna watch it - with football - jets got those awful throwback jerseys today - yikes

ok mets

wright - needs to step up

score early - get a lead - let ollie relax and throw strikes (not like last game LOL)

reyes on the basepaths

u know

we gotta win

how r they handling tix for the playoff game?

middle of the 5th

0-0

ollie is pitching well and efficiently - 60ish pitches - 6ks

mets not getting good looks at olsen who is throwing a nice curveball today and keeping us off balance

bottom 5 here - time to rise up

LETS GO METS

Well, the end of the road. Not as bad as last year with Tom Glavine's toxic cesspool of a disaster...more like the current Met tease you than kick you in the gut.Mets couldn't eak out a clutch run or two if their lives depended on it.When Ryan Braun hit that two run homer to make it 3-1 milwaukee in the eighth, and C.C. Sabathia hurled a nother complete game masterpiece,I knew it was over....Mets fall behind 4-2 after Schoenweis and Ayala allow solo homers, and the Mets offense stalled yet again. Not even a double by Jose Reyes really mattered because two were out already....Beltran walked and Delgado hit a bullet off of Arthur Rhodes to left field, but it didn't have enough lift...deep flyout.Like Ryan Church the next inning, two out and walk to Damion Easley....looked good off the bat but didn't get enough. At least after his offensive nightmares recently,Ryan Church didn't end Shea Stadium's history with a strikeout.Too little too late, just a pathetic tease.

Great posts, sonny and chance and it's been a pleasure talking Mets baseball with you guys this season.Who knows what the future will bring....and I'm certain we'll talk about these Mets we still love as much as they tear apart our hearts during the offseason hot stove league.

I wasn't sure I was going to do it but I wound up watching much of the Mets closing ceremonies at Shea Stadium. The intros were awesome, but the best, most poignant moments were the final crossing of the plate for each Met great, accompanied by the most powerful baseball grand score imaginable, and my eyes welled at lots of moments past replayed out and the pride and reactions of the Mets all stars to the moment, crowd and each other. The final pitch thrown,by Tom Seaver to a still "amazing" (had to get that in someplace)Mike Piazza, was was a great moment, even if it proved Seaver no longer had a fastball or any control.;)Willie Mays,Yogi Berra.....Ron Darling,Keith Hernandez,Lenny Dykstra,Howard Johnson,Jesse Orosco,Gary Carter,Darryl Strawberry,Dwight Gooden,Al Leiter.....so many more just brought back some really terrific memories.May the CitiField bring forward many happy ones to come....and thank you Shea, the working class stadium, for the memories we Mets fans will hold on to forever.:=D::=D::=D::=D:

still kinda numb

cant believe there's no p/o game tomorrow

was gonna go somehow - watch pedro

too early to get specific on what has to change - for me anyway

i like manuel - don't blame him a bit - wonderin if i was too hard on willie - but i like manuel - str8 shooter

very disappointed in david wright - he choked down the stretch IMO - not very good with runners in scoring position - seemed to be trying too hard - swinging too hard - great fielding - but his stats suggest an mvp like season and i never trusted him with runners in scoring position

do we reup carlos d? hard not to but he's gonna want big money - i say NO

krod? i want no part

cc sabathia? i say no

we need young guys

ollie? maybe - how much is he gonna want?

really bummed about the way it turned out and now that's 2 yrs in a row ........... the ship be sinking

I'm not as negative about the future chance....oddly last year David Wright was one of those pulling his weight in September when the Mets collapsed with 17 games to go.Reyes too was hot and cold, not bad like last stretch drive but not great.Ryan Church other than Thursday night killed us offensively, and when you have patchwork material at second base and a very inconsistent Brian Schneider plus the pitcher's spot, the bottom of the order rarely contributed late in the pennant race.

David and Jose have to get more consistent, demand more on the field as leaders.Oliie was alright today but if he had the heart and determination of Johann Santana,or even Pedro even though it doesn't come easy any ore, what a pitcher he could be with his stuff. But he doesn't deserve big bucks to return...I'd only take him bac k with a one year deal,he could build his worth with a determined improvement in consistency and pitching efficiency next year.

As for Carlos Delgado, remember I told you the club has an option for $12 mil next year...that's a bargain if he has another year left in him (though more consistent)like this year.

C.C.Sabathia I'd take in a heartbeat,he proved to be one tough mother all the games he's been going with mimimal rest, all the pressure(only faltered once a couple weeks back)He has been unbelievable his past few starts...between him and Santana, what combination opf talent, combativeness, courage and tenacity. Both are winners and either truly deserves Cy Young even without the best overall record in the league.ERA's should count plenty in that consideration.I tink he at least stays in the pitcher friendly NL,don't think he'll be a Met but if there were an opening, like hell I'd try to get him.A.J. Burnette is another who might be lights out coming back to the NL,more gettable I think.

Don't forget John Maine returns healthy next year after the bone spurs ar removed this winter. He has the tough mentality to improve and return to the top level pitcher he seemed to be rapidly develioping into even into spring training .You have Santana,Pelfrey,Maine and you build around that, maybe with an arm like Jon Niese as a fifth starter and a solid trade or free agent as your third or fourth pitcher.

But they absolutely have to bring in a player or two on offense who knows how to get on base, work counts, move runners and play the team game.Let's have a motion offense that forces the opponent to react rather than a complacent tendency towards impatience that leads to quick at bats and rest for the pitchers they face, incuding especially the mediocre-decent ones they had so much trouble with.A good team makes its own breaks, doesn't erxpect another club to bail them out of their own failures and missed opprtunities.

Of course, the pen is important too...it is so difficult getting a great bullpen ,not to mention a quality closer now we probably have seen the last of Billy Wagner due to his elbow injuries. That's why it has to be done thoughtfully,carefully.....and the emphasis should be better offensive execution and effort so the pitching staff is not pressed beyond its limits.Great teams have good five, ten game runs and ward off bad efforts with more good ones. You can't win every game, most good teams average 90-100 wins but rarely are out of a game.Play every day like youi expect to win, learn om bad games and do whatever it takes down the stretch to seal the deal...that's the secret of winning the Mets have to relearn.

Now that the Mets 08 season has come to a merciful end I would like to thank all those who have contributed to this thread. It has been a fun six months, filled with both heartache and joy. We praised them when they did well and trounced them when they failed, but most of us stuck by them always hoping for that breakout string of wins that would have taken the Mets to the World Series. It was not to be, but I don’t consider 89 wins and hovering around first place for the entire year a failure. They could have done better to be sure and there is a lot of work to be done for 2009, but when you compare the team to most of the other teams in both the AL and NL, I think we did pretty well.

It was a year that saw the firing of the manager and pitching coach, and an excellent turn around resulted, it just wasn’t enough.

The Shea goodbye farewell show was awesome; I teared up more times than I can count. It was a day I will never forget
I will, as I always do, follow the Mets throughout the winter and report any news as we get closer to the ’09 season.

A big shout out and thanks to my boys Chance 1and Sausy, whose outstanding insight to the Mets season was always a joy to read. Thanks guys!
